“Good work.” (Urt)
Urt, a member of the Order, began his duties only at night. He worked at the Order facility on the outskirts of the First Town during the night shift. His job was simply to compile information sent from all over the kingdom. By morning, Yuna will come to collect it, so Urt just has to organize it by then.
Urt was a member of the Order dedicated to Tyr. However, unlike Yuna, who served Arc, Tyr wasn’t very busy, so unless something military happens, Urt’s services were not often needed. If Tyr went somewhere, Urt would accompany him along with Hal, but recently, Tyr had been teaching at the military academy, so there hadn’t been much need for that.
With little to do, Urt helped with the Order’s tasks in his spare time.
While leisurely drinking coffee and reading a book, a knock sounded at the door of the facility. Urt, with a quiet movement, listens intently.
Two knocks, three knocks, one knock, two knocks.
It was a secret code known only to the Order members. This facility, which gathered information from all over the kingdom, was highly secure. Therefore, unless the specific number of knocks was made, the door would not be opened, regardless of whether it was Arc or Tyr on the other side. This strict approach was what earned the Warden Household’s trust.
When Urt opened the door, he found a familiar face. It was the Order member in charge of the southern region of the kingdom.
“Ah.” (Urt)
“Urt-san, good work. A message from the Merchant Guild in the southern kingdom for Arc-sama. Please take care of it.” (Order Member)
“Okay. I’ll take it.” (Urt)
“Then, I’m off.” (Order Member)
After handing over the letter, the Order member quickly attempted to leave.
“Ah, why don’t you rest a bit? Have some sweets and take a wash.” (Urt)
“No, if I relax, I’ll end up seeing the noon sun at the mountain peak of the Great Mountain Range.” (Order Member)
“Ah, right. You’ll collapse from the heat and exhaustion. Wait a moment. Take some sweets with you. Eat them on the way.” (Urt)
Urt wrapped a few pieces of the sweets from the table into a bag and handed it to him. The Order member gratefully accepted them.
“Thank you very much. Excuse me.” (Order Member)
“Take care.” (Urt)
Once the man left, Urt shut the door tightly again. The door was reinforced with three locks for security. To forcefully break in, one would need to bring a thick log to break the door, as though trying to breach a castle gate.
Throughout the night, a few more Order members came to visit. Each time, Urt unlocked the door, responded, and performed his duties. However, it was not only humans who come.
“Oh, it’s here, it’s here.” (Urt)
Urt climbed to the rooftop and saw a pigeon had arrived. It was a carrier pigeon.
Back when the Warden family still ruled the old lands, the carrier pigeon was often the method for delivering messages, not a horse-riding Order member. It had been a year since moving to Mikanda, and the Order had been experimenting with using the pigeons to carry messages. Unfortunately, it was not working as expected. The birds couldn’t cross the Great Mountain Range that marks the boundary of Mikanda.
Currently, they send pigeons to a town at the foot of the mountains. Then, an Order member climbed the mountain to send the bird from the summit. The success rate of the pigeons arriving was about 50% so far. It was not a bad number, but for it to be practical, they needed to increase that rate. Ideally, they wanted it to be at least 80%.
“You guys have it tough too, huh? Carrying letters in such unfamiliar lands.” (Urt)
Urt fed the pigeons with a sympathetic look.
After that, there were no more visitors, and Urt’s brief nap was interrupted as the sun begins to rise.
“Alright, alright.” (Urt)
When Urt opened the door, a familiar face as there.
“…Good morning.” (Yuna)
“Huh, it’s you, Yuna.” (Urt)
Yuna, with her usual stoic demeanor, held out her hand.
“…Give me the information.” (Yuna)
“Alright, alright. Last night was light on info.” (Urt)
Urt handed over the memo with the information, but as soon as he looked up to talk, Yuna was already gone. She silently took the info and left.
“Such a cold person.” (Urt)
Urt clicked his tongue and shuts the door.
Although they were close in age and both Order members under the Warden Household, it was hard to get along with someone as unfriendly as Yuna. Despite knowing her for over ten years, that scowl of hers had never changed since childhood.
A while later, Urt’s replacement arrived.
“Good work, Urt. You can head home now.” (Order Member)
“Good morning. I’ll be off then.” (Urt)
Freed from his dull job, Urt stretched, loosening his muscles before heading home.
“Well then, time to go home and sleep.” (Urt)
Although he took a quick nap, he still wanted to sleep in his soft bed at home. Unlike the workers who headed out in the daylight, Urt walked with a scowl at the bright sunlight, taking unsteady steps.
This kind of life had been going on for a while now. It was an incredibly dull life.
“Tyr-sama, I wish you’d start a war or something.” (Urt)
There was no place for Urt in peaceful times.
Urt went home muttering to himself.
