I feel like, all these preparations to leave and he will be semi-forced to become king. Hes making all of this money and such but all of his actions will only increase his prestige. At this point even the queen has noticed him even when he is but a child. Any adult would see these actions and call him an unprecedented genius. If the school he goes to is built for nobles which can be said to be the “next leading generation”, and he is popular among said generation, it can be said that he has their support. All of this culminates in a scene where the queen offers him the position, he tries to decline saying “I’m only a lowly xyz” she can shatter that illusion, compounded with his connections and a teary glance from the princess we wind up with a new ruler.
This is all speculation of course.
