Departure with Piyo

(Thank you for reading at bayabuscotranslation.com)

Meanwhile, in the Healberry Village.

“Piyo!” (Cockatrice)

The cry of a cockatrice echoed from outside. I wriggled out from beneath the covers.

“Ugogo, good morning!” (Wood)
“Ah, good morning.” (Elt)

It seemed Wood had woken up as well. Occasionally, the cockatrices went out for an early morning walk. At such times, one could hear their cries from outside. It was a rare event, and I considered it a good omen.

“Ugo, the cockatrices are full of energy.” (Wood)

“Yes, they are. The weather looks fine too.” (Elt)

So far, the cockatrices only went for morning walks on clear days. Soft sunlight streamed through the window.

Come to think of it, there were old folk songs in which cockatrices appeared as symbols of vitality. It was said that people found courage in their cheerful piyo-piyo cries. I could understand that. In the old days, people must have found hope in those fluffy creatures.

“All right, shall we have breakfast?” (Elt)

“Ugogo! I will make salad!” (Wood)

I left the salad to Wood and began cutting a block of ham. Then, perhaps we could eat the pickled Puzzle Mushrooms we received yesterday. Those soft, chewy ones soaked in vinegar. Thick slices of ham, refreshing herbal tea, Puzzle Mushrooms, and a bit of fruit. We ate breakfast slowly and carefully.

Today, we would once again explore the underground passages. We would take the carriage to the third underground plaza and advance from there.

“Let’s do our best, Wood.” (Elt)

“Ugo! I’ll do my best!” (Wood)

Now, if only we could find the crimson Berry Mushrooms. The mana in the underground passages had been growing denser, so perhaps we might have a good chance.

After preparing, we gathered at the village entrance. The adventurers, Anaria, Iskamina, and the carriage were already assembled.

“Nyaan! I will deliver everyone swiftly, nyaan!” (Brown)

Brown, dressed smartly in a coachman’s outfit, looked quite dashing. He resembled a cat wearing boots. Cute.

Iskamina studied Brown’s attire with a thoughtful nod.

“Mogu, you seem motivated.” (Iskamina)

“Nyaan, I just bought this outfit new, nyaan.” (Brown)

“Mogu, you are stylish, mogu.” (Iskamina)

The Nyaff Tribe always dressed well. They often changed their outfits too.

And there were others gathered besides us.

“Piyo.” (Yahoo) (Cockatrice)

“Piyoyo.” (We’re here.) (Cockatrice)

“Piyo…” (Going underground…) (Cockatrice)

Three cockatrices stood there. They seemed to be the same two that had come to the underground passages before, along with another one that looked rather distant.

An adventurer in his thirties leaned close to me and spoke quietly.

“What should we do, boss? Seems like they want to come along again.” (Adventurer)

“Hmm. From a combat standpoint, it would be better to have them.” (Elt)

They had been quite the help last time. As I glanced toward the cockatrices, Anaria was feeding them something.

“Ah, is this what you want?” (Anaria)

“Piyo!” (Cockatrices)

It looked like white squid slices, but in fact, it was pickled Puzzle Mushroom. The cockatrices quickly began eating them.

*Monyumonyu, monyumonyu.*

Yes, that chewing motion was unmistakable. I could recognize it now. They were eating Puzzle Mushrooms.

“Piyopiyo.” (Monyu, tasty.) (Cockatrice)

“Piyopiyopiyo.” (Today again, monyu we dine.) (Cockatrice)

“Piyo… piyo.” (Seeking yet unseen monyu.) (Cockatrice)

Somehow, I could feel their enthusiasm.

“Ugo, they seem motivated.” (Wood)

“It appears so. We will be glad to have them with us.” (Elt)

“Yes, that will be helpful.” (Wood)

As I said that, the cockatrices raised their wings high.

“Piyo, piyo!” (We’ll do our best! Monyumonyu!) (Cockatrice)

“Piyoyo, piyo!” (Our spirit is high! Monyumonyu!) (Cockatrice)

“Piyo, piyoyo!” (For fresh monyu, we march! Monyumonyu!) (Cockatrice)

Despite all their monyumonyu chewing, their enthusiasm came through clearly. There was no reason to refuse.

“All right, let’s go together then.” (Elt)

At my words, the cockatrices all responded at once.

“Piyoyo!” (Cockatrices)

And so, we set out from the village to explore the underground plaza.

“Ugo… by the way, are the cockatrices not riding the carriage?” (Wood)

The carriage had departed without them.

“Ugo, I think they could fit if we squeezed them in.” (Wood)

“Well, yes, that might be true… but look over there.” (Elt)

The cockatrices that had been beside the carriage were now sprinting at full speed, carrying the one with the distant look on its face.

“Piyoyo!” (Run!) (Cockatrice)

“Piyo!” (Carry it!) (Cockatrice)

“…Piyo.” (We’ll switch later.) (Cockatrice)

They dashed down the road at incredible speed. A cockatrice running at full force was as fast as a cheetah and had seemingly endless stamina. They would probably stop to rest somewhere along the way.

Watching them, Wood nodded deeply.

“Ugo, I have learned something today.” (Wood)
