Chapter 68

(Thank you for reading at bayabuscotranslation.com)

I succeeded in defeating the “Blue Rabbit” once again. The sight of it staring at me with its big eyes, looking back at me with a puzzled face as I spoke to it, burned into my eyelids and wouldn’t leave. Even though I only defeated a single monster, I was overcome with a sense of loss, and I couldn’t stop the tears from flowing.

This time too, it dropped items. Just like before, there was the lychee and something like a furball.

“As always… it’s delicious…” (Kouta)

Speaking to the deceased rabbit while chewing the mysterious lychee.

Completely a dangerous person!

But that was honestly how I felt at the time.

The furball seemed to be the tail of the “Blue Rabbit”. I wouldn’t know without an appraisal, but I was pretty sure that’s what it was. The base was blue, and it turned white toward the tip. It looked like an accessory. It was clearly made to be attached to something, on a backpack, belt, or if I really tried, probably even on an ear.

My poncho fastens at the neck with a button. I decided to attach it to the buttonhole there. It looks kind of like a pompom, but until I lose to my sense of shame, I’ll leave it there. After returning to the guild once, I dove into the dungeon again but hardly hunted anything.

Still, I decided to call it a day.

I just wasn’t feeling it, so it couldn’t be helped. It hadn’t even been three hours since I parted with Haruka-kun, and I was already back on the surface. The reason I headed to the guild was simple, if I didn’t lighten my backpack, I’d be in trouble tomorrow.

It’s basic party etiquette to empty your drops.

“Huh? Kouta-kun, you came back again?” (Receptionist)

“Are you sure it’s okay to be shuffled around the workplace this conveniently? Maybe you should talk directly to your superior?” (Kouta)

Earlier, this Onee-san was at the buying counter, and now she was at a regular window.

Anyone would find that worrying.

“Kouta-kun!!” (Receptionist)

Please don’t just call my name and then bury your face in the counter. Even though I understood her emotional state well… from the outside, it probably looks like I made her cry.

Is it just my imagination, or did the security guy just glance sharply this way?

With a determined look, Onee-san lifted her head and sprayed complaints about her boss at me like a machine gun.

Honestly, I think I did well…

I deflected, dodged, and hid from every one of her complaints, and I survived.

If it weren’t me, someone who knows how strong Onee-san is, no one would even understand what she was talking about. She really has been forced to move around to all sorts of roles.

And then she ended with this…

“I’m absolutely! Aaaabsolutely! Going to quit this job!!” (Receptionist)

I see. So she’s apparently too valuable for them to accept her resignation. In Japan, where freedom of occupation is guaranteed, for someone to not be allowed to quit… there can’t be many jobs like that. What comes to mind are people crucial to Japan’s national security. It’s just like high-ranking military personnel, intelligence agents… or someone strong enough to explore deep layers of the dungeon.

“Fuu! Fuu! Fuu~…” (Receptionist)

“Have you calmed down, Onee-san? I’d like to use the appraisal room, is it available?” (Kouta)

Lately, I’ve started speaking more casually with her, but even I couldn’t help but shift back to polite speech just now.

“Hmm? Umm, yeah, it’s open!” (Receptionist)

Good, looks like she’s calmed down enough. I’m relieved too. She was radiating bloodlust just a minute ago! That’s not a joke!? It was genuinely a situation where I felt my life was in danger!! Even so, the only reason I stayed standing at the counter was because I couldn’t move!

“Level doesn’t go up that easily, you know? What do you want appraised?” (Receptionist)

“I’d like this appraised.” (Kouta)

Normally, I would’ve dodged the topic smoothly.

But having been overwhelmed by that killing intent, I ended up showing her the drop from the “Blue Rabbit”.

“…It’s the first time I’ve seen this item. Let Onee-san appraise it too!” (Receptionist)

“…If you’ll let me appraise you, then I suppose it’s fine.” (Kouta)

It looks like we both calmed down.

“Suzuki Mai, 25 years old, single. I won’t tell you my measurements. Kyaa~♪” (Receptionist)

I don’t flinch at something like this anymore. Thanks to those three, I’ve been through plenty lately.

“You’re affiliated with the ‘Suzuki Single Sword Style’, aren’t you? I always watch the videos.” (Kouta)

The joking Onee-san suddenly turned serious again.

…Please stop, it’s scary. My body twitches in reaction.

“How did you know?” (Receptionist)

“It’s because your movements match the person demonstrating in the videos. I think you’re stronger than them though.” (Kouta)

“You noticed that well.” (Receptionist)

“I’ve been copying those videos and using them as reference for my moves. Well, I’m still just at the monkey-see-monkey-do stage though.” (Kouta)

“…That’s why I was interested in you from our first meeting.” (Receptionist)

“Ah, so the reason you spoke to me a lot was because you were keeping an eye on me.” (Kouta)

Ah, that makes sense. I’d been wondering why this Onee-san kept talking to me. I thought she was just a friendly person, but judging from Haruka-kun’s reaction, that didn’t seem to be the case. I didn’t think too deeply about it at the time.

“I was young back then~.” (Receptionist)

“…Was that really you in the videos?” (Kouta)

“Of course it was.” (Receptionist)

“…You looked so beautiful I didn’t recognize you. I thought maybe it was a relative…” (Kouta)

Even as flattery, that was… a bit much, maybe?

“Reeeally!? Reeeally?” (Receptionist)

Onee-san looks at me with sparkling eyes.

I’m worried about how easygoing she is. Very, very worried! I’m sorry, but let’s wrap this up here…

“So, when will the appraisal room be available?” (Kouta)

“Huh? Oh, it’s available right now?” (Receptionist)

Onee-saaan!! I get that you’re stressed, but please do your job!?
