Nana’s Letter

(Thank you for reading at bayabuscotranslation.com)

No one was at fault here. Since the lord had come, it was only natural that Nana would want to take off the costume. This was just a small misunderstanding.

“Hmm, I see?” (Elt)

But Nana tilted her head slightly and looked at Dia. Her eyes were a bottomless blue like the ocean, but they did not feel cold. For some reason, I had the intuition that they were close to a calm sea.

“…You mean, she shedding skin, piyo?” (Dia)

“Yes, that’s right.” (Nana)

““Eh?”” (Everyone)

Everyone spoke out loud. Strong. Nana’s mental strength was impressive.

“You have to take the skin with you… [Storage].” (Nana)

When Nana lightly touched the button on her clothes, mana was released.

*Pop!*

With a light popping sound like popcorn, the cockatrice costume was instantly absorbed into the button and disappeared.

An item box? It is the first time I had seen one in this world.

“The skin disappeared, piyo…!” (Dia)

“It’s magic. Leaving it here would be a bother, right? It’s stored inside this button.” (Nana)

“Wow, that’s amazing, piyo! So convenient, piyo!” (Dia)

Amazing, she shifted Dia’s attention to something else. She no longer seemed worried about the shedding. Nana was good at dealing with children. Now then, I still hadn’t found out what Nana came here for. Judging by this, it didn’t seem urgent. She had also entertained Dia. Maybe I should invite her to have dinner together, including a welcome.

“For now, it will get dark soon. If you don’t mind, would you like to have dinner together?” (Elt)

“By all means. Thank you for the invitation.” (Nana)

Nana placed her hand on her chest gracefully.

Her current clothes were lightweight adventurer-style in a crimson color. Her low voice and short hair made her truly look like a young male adventurer. I had heard vampires were all beautiful, and I could certainly agree. To me, it was so unreal that it was almost off-putting. It felt like I was seeing an idol in real life.

“…By the way, where is Marcis?” (Elt)

I suddenly noticed Marcosias was not among us. Dia answered solemnly.

“If it’s Maru-chan, she’s resting under that tree over there, piyo. She overexerted himself, piyo… She will regain his strength soon, piyo.” (Dia)

Dia pointed her wing sharply. There lay a cockatrice on its side, and Marcosias was sleeping with her head resting on its belly.

After that, we parted ways and went home. I briefly considered inviting Leia to dinner but decided against it. Nana was not a member of the Zanzas’ Adventurer Guild, so I should be the one to welcome her first. As an adventurer, she could have a meal meeting with them tomorrow.

Something was nagging at me. I felt like I had met Nana somewhere before.

The sun had already set well beyond the mountains. A cold wind was blowing.

When Nana entered the village from the second plaza, she seemed very impressed.

“Is all of this plant magic…? The mana of the Nagash Household is indeed strong. Among them, Elt-sama’s mana seems exceptionally strong…” (Nana)

“Hmm… I don’t really understand that part myself. Compared to other nobles?” (Elt)
“Yes, even compared to Hold.” (Nana)

“…!” (Elt)

I remembered. Nana and I had not met for the first time. Seven or eight years ago, we greeted each other once at my family home. It might have been some kind of meeting. Nana in uniform and my brother Hold appeared and exchanged greetings. Though we didn’t really talk at all.

“I remembered… It was quite a while ago, but we met at my home.” (Elt)

To excuse myself, the cockatrice costume was too striking… It took time to connect the image with the memory. But I could recall it by how she addressed my brother just now. Nobles didn’t usually address each other by name without honorifics unless they are very close friends or family.

Nana quietly nodded at my words. It seemed I was correct.

“I’m surprised. You remembered?” (Nana)

“No, I had forgotten until now…” (Elt)

“That meeting was at night, and the greeting lasted only a few minutes. Besides, Elt-sama was still a child then. As Hold said, you have a wonderful memory.” (Nana)

Is that so…? I was about seven years old seven or eight years ago. It would be rare to remember something like that.

“Nana is your nickname. Your real name is… Nafinadia Skratoff, isn’t it?” (Elt)

“That long name too… I’m surprised. Aside from my fellow vampires, you’re the first person I’ve ever known to memorize it in one go.” (Nana)

Nafinadia was a long name, so it was shortened to Nana. Among nobles, long names were common due to tradition and other reasons. When we met before, she had introduced herself as Nafinadia. That meant she was different in many ways now. She seemed to use her adventurer’s name and noble name separately. How to handle this depended on the individual. It was not legally forbidden to identify as either.

Stella, holding a drowsy Dia, said…

“Elt-sama really remembers things well… He’s at the level of memorizing the contents of his family’s books by heart.” (Stella)

Now that I think about it, I do remember most things quite well. Well, I even remember things from my previous life.

We walked along the village path chatting. The topic about my family didn’t develop and ended there. It seemed it was not an important topic for Nana.

The crimson color of the sunset faded, and starlight and glowing moss lit the path. We were almost home.

I suddenly realized I did not know what food vampires liked. Elves like vegetables. More specifically, Chinese cuisine. I had heard vampires like tomatoes, but…

“By the way, do you have any requests for dinner? I can usually get most vegetables.” (Elt)

At that moment, I felt Nana’s eyes flicker slightly.

“…Tomato, please.” (Nana)

“Tomato…” (Elt)

“Vampires’ staple food is tomato.” (Nana)

“Is that so…?” (Elt)

I don’t understand. I thought it was normally something like blood or something. Then, it occurred to me. Right, in the game, vampires as a whole species liked tomatoes. Vampires were a playable race added later, but there was that rather silly setting. Even though in the game being said to like tomatoes was not useful information, so it was ignored. However, it’s the same in this world too.

“Understood, if it’s tomatoes, I can prepare as many as you want.” (Elt)

“I can make spicy stir-fried tomatoes too…!” (Stella)

Oh, I want to eat that too.

“We can live if we have tomatoes… Please treat us.” (Nana)

Dinner was full of tomato dishes. Tomatoes have many varieties and are widely used both fresh and in sauces. The importance of tomatoes is not much different in this world either. They can be grown all over the world, and it’s easy to eat them raw or cooked.

Raw tomatoes with just salt. Grilled tomatoes, tomato and onion soup. The main dish was spicy stir-fry with bell peppers, eggplant, tomato, seasoned with pepper and doubanjiang. To finish, fresh tomato juice. I didn’t need that much tomato, so I had orange juice instead.

Dia and the revived Marcosias also ate a lot.

“This stir-fry is delicious, piyo!” (Dia)

“The oil and spice are effective. It’s spicy but tasty!” (Marcosias)

It seemed Dia liked spicy food. Marcosias was the type who ate it even though it was spicy. Nana was also eating the tomato dishes with a look of bliss. By the way, her movements were calm and smooth, and there was elegance in how she used the knife and fork.

“Ah, such wonderful tomatoes… To be able to eat such delicious tomatoes…” (Nana)

“I think they can be eaten all year even in the north… Ah, but the best time depends on the variety. Being able to eat anything is an advantage of this village.” (Elt)

Thick-skinned tomatoes were for cooking. Thin-skinned and sweet ones were for eating raw. I didn’t fully understand everything either, but the best season differed by variety. For that reason, it was quite difficult to eat various dishes at their best condition.

Dinner ended peacefully like that. There was nothing particularly noteworthy. Stella came up as a topic as a fellow S-rank adventurer, and then we talked about the village and so on. But after finishing dinner and some time had passed, Nana tightened her noble-like atmosphere and brought up a new topic.

Finally, the main subject.

“Actually, I have a letter from Hold. I haven’t seen the contents myself though.” (Nana)

Saying that, she took an envelope out of her bosom. It was a stylish envelope prepared by Hold. Small but glittering with gold dust.

“…Let me see it.” (Elt)

My heart pounded. I wondered what was written.

I tried to keep calm, but for how long? Remembering the relationship between Nana and Hold, I expected this. She must be carrying some kind of message.

I took the envelope from Nana and opened it immediately.

I couldn’t predict what was inside. Maybe it’s better not to read it here, but it’s a difficult decision. After all, I can’t predict how Nana will convey it to Hold.

Inside the envelope was a letter. And one more thing. This was……

“…A check.” (Elt)

It was a proper check issued under the Nagash Household’s name. Moreover, it was for one hundred gold coins. That was quite a large sum. But why is there money enclosed? I looked over the enclosed letter.

“This is–…” (Elt)

I almost recoiled in surprise but somehow controlled myself.

To summarize the letter from Hold, it said something like this…

‘I’m sorry for everything until now.’

‘If you wish to inherit the family headship, I will support Elt.’

Usually these stories will have the older siblings find out about the exiled one’s success and go straight into antagonist mode and cause a bunch of problems before their downfall but I was expecting a twist because there was no animosity when Hold was introduced.

He was just concerned so it could still go either way. I didn’t expect this though! I kinda like how this story keeps putting me on edge and then it’s an easy resolution and we can immediately move on to the next growth event.
