Going out with Sonia (1): Walking Around Town

Today, I went out with Sonia. The day we had originally promised to go out had been muddled due to the last of the Seven Wonders issue, so we made a new promise, and today was the day. It was my fault, though, for making it muddled.
In the morning, as I left the dormitory, a cold wind brushed against my cheek. The temperature was especially low today.
The Rodon City, compared to the southern village where I used to live, has less rain and tends to have relatively clear, dry spells. So, even in winter, when it’s sunny, it’s not that cold outside, but today, it was cloudy and chilly.
I raised the collar of my thick coat and hurried to the meeting place. The meeting spot was the new school building’s library. It would have been tough to meet outside at this time of year. As I entered the library, the warm air enveloped me, and I let out a sigh of relief, loosening my shoulders.
“Oh? Good morning, Lux-san.” (Mitia)
When I turned toward the voice, I saw a girl about the same age as my younger sister, Norris, holding a thick textbook and smiling brightly. It was Mitia, who worked at the research institute.
“Oh, good morning, Mitia. Are you here to borrow a book?” (Lux)
“Yes, I have some research I need to do.” (Mitia)
“Even though it’s a day off? That’s tough.” (Lux)
“No, no, it’s nothing… But I promised Noris-chan that we would hang out in town this afternoon!” (Mitia)
The two of them quickly became close the other day. It was nice to see them getting along.
“I see. Be sure to get along with Norris.” (Lux)
“Yes! Thank you!” (Mitia)
With a happy reply, Mitia left the library, and as she passed by, Sonia entered.
“Oh, good morning, Sonia.” (Lux)
“Good morning, Lux. Was that girl someone you know? I don’t think I’ve seen her before in the first year.” (Sonia)
“No, she works at the research building. Her name is Mitia. I’ll explain the details later. Shall we go?” (Lux)
“…Yeah, let’s go!” (Sonia)
And so, we headed out together, leaving the school and heading toward the town.

(TLN: POV switch to Sonia)
Walking through the town with Lux, I heard about the girl named Mitia. It seemed like she and Norris-chan had some history. It was a bit reassuring to see her being friendly with someone I didn’t know. Then, I shook my head. I was thinking too much. Too much.
Lux, who had been looking at me with a puzzled expression, asked.
“Where should we go? Do you have somewhere you want to visit?” (Lux)
“There are a few shops I’d like to visit, but what about you, Lux?” (Sonia)
“I’m fine with wherever you want to go, Sonia. But, if we can find it, I’d like to stop by Holand-san’s food stall. The dorm matron asked me to pick up some sweets if I happen to see him.” (Lux)
“Well, then, when it’s lunchtime, let’s have lunch near where Holand-san usually is. We can wait for him while eating lunch. How does that sound?” (Sonia)
“Yeah, that sounds good. Let’s do that.” (Lux)
The first place we stopped was a general goods store. This shop had ornaments made by carving wood displayed outside.
“Oh, this pendant is cute.” (Sonia)
It was a charming wooden carving of a bird’s feather on a leather cord necklace. There were also bracelets, figurines, and many other fun items.
“Huh, I’ve never been to a shop like this, but they really put a lot of work into it.” (Lux)
“What kind of shops were there in the village where you lived, Lux?” (Sonia)
“It was a rural area, so there were two general goods stores and two tool shops. There was only one store run by someone who sold anything and everything.” (Lux)
“Really? Wasn’t that inconvenient?” (Sonia)
“Well, I didn’t think it was at the time. For big purchases, everyone went to a town a little further away. But that town wasn’t as big as Rodon.” (Lux)
We chatted like that as we peeked into a few more shops, strolling back and forth along the main street. At one clothing store, I suddenly asked Lux a question that had been on my mind.
“By the way, Lux, you always have that thick coat with you, don’t you?” (Sonia)
The village Lux lived in was supposed to have a warm climate, with no snow, yet the coat he wore was a well-made, high-quality one. I couldn’t imagine that coat being sold in the general goods or tool shops.
“Oh, yeah, this coat belonged to my grandfather.” (Lux)
He explained that it had been in the closet for a long time, but when he was coming to the northern city, he brought it along just in case.
“It was bulky, and I thought I might not need it, but I’m glad I brought it with me.” (Lux)
He said while smiling.
So, it was his grandfather’s coat. His grandfather… must have had quite good taste. I wonder… does Lux also have good taste?
Next, we went to a bookstore. Lux loved books. If he had time, he was often in the library. Lux picked up a book, debating whether or not to buy it.
“Why don’t you just buy it?” (Sonia)
I encouraged him.
“Well, I want to, but once I buy one, I won’t be able to stop… And I don’t have the space…” (Lux)
“Oh, in that case, after you finish reading, why not donate it to the library?” (Sonia)
“Huh? Can you really do that?” (Lux)
“I think so. Haven’t you ever seen a book in the library with a label that says ‘donated by someone’?” (Sonia)
“Now that you mention it… Alright, next time I’ll ask the librarian. If it’s possible, I’ll come buy it again.” (Lux)
He said, returning the book to the shelf.
By the time we finished, it was almost noon. While walking to a recommended shop mentioned in an article by Ratt-kun, I suddenly stopped.
“What’s wrong, Sonia?” (Lux)
Lux, looking puzzled, asked.
“Sorry, I think I forgot something in the previous store. I’ll go get it. Can you go ahead and save a seat for me?” (Sonia)
“Okay, I understand. But do you want me to come with you?” (Lux)
“No, no, it’s fine! I’ll be back soon!” (Sonia)
With that, I left Lux behind and ran off.
I heard Lux mumble softly, “Hmm.”
