Laertes Hazaknut Stone’s POV

“He’s gone… hasn’t he?” (Laertes)

“Yes…” (??)

As the carriage carrying my son disappeared from view, I muttered softly.

It was the first time that child has openly shared his feelings with me since the day he was born 15 years ago. While I am happy to see Ulysses growing up, I also feel a bit lonely. After all, now that I have lost my beloved wife, my son is the only one who has remained my emotional support.

“…Milord, you have made a wise decision.” (??)

“Indeed.” (Laertes)

I nodded in response to the words of my longtime attendant, Kasper.

He had been urging me for some time to send Ulysses off to stand on his own.

As a member of the Stone Household… no, as one who holds the title of Hazaknut, the King of Norz, Ulysses must inevitably embark on a journey.

To become the true king who will lead the people of Norz…

The Norz Empire was once ruled over Brint Island, but it was driven to the far northern lands of Salso by the first king of Dehaubalz, Butlerz Weir Dehaubalz.

…No, more accurately, it would be correct to say that only Salso was barely allowed to remain.

The Norz Empire, which once boasted such splendor, now struggles to live in this harsh, cold land where crops barely grow. Nevertheless, the remaining Norz people were allowed to live here. We can’t ask for more than that. Since then, despite our poverty, we have lived modestly but sturdily, and after three hundred years, the bloodline of Norz is still present.

—All the while dreaming of the day when the Norz Empire will be restored.

That said, the path to this point is certainly not been easy.

The Dehaubalz Kingdom was constantly fearing rebellion from the Norz people. They had always kept us under surveillance, stationing knight commanders in neighboring territories to watch over us. Normally, the duty of a knight commander was to protect the king, but in the Dehaubalz Kingdom, the commander’s duty was to defend the border of Sarso. In the end, if that ended up protecting the king, it was not entirely wrong.

In any case, I have no intention of overthrowing the Kingdom of Dehaubalz. Therefore, while the vigilance may seem unnecessary, the knight commanders from past generations have repeatedly tried to provoke us. At one point, they disguised their knights as bandits and rampaged through Salso’s territory, attacking any other noble who passed through. Of course, all these actions were merely excuses to justify an invasion of Salso. However, Salso is the farthest northern land of Brint Island, and very few people visit it. The most important town is covered by tall city walls, so even if bandits were to appear, the damage would be minimal.

Given all of this, I wish they would finally understand that it’s futile, but the fools persist with their provocations as if it were part of their role as knight commanders. It’s almost pitiable. Even more so, some of the former commanders who opposed such actions lost their position and fell into disgrace for displeasing the king.

In any case, what I can do is protect Salso… and all of Norz, and entrust it to that person… That is my duty, no… my punishment, for having led Norz to defeat, and causing my people to suffer for more than three hundred years.

“…Do you think Ulysses will do well in the royal capital?” (Laertes)

“You need not worry, my lord. Young master is the one who will guide Salso… no, the people of Norz. Once he returns here, I am certain he will restore our pride.” (Kasper)

“Yes…” (Laertes)

I slowly nodded at Casper’s words, but within my chest, both hope and anxiety swirled.

I believe that living at the Royal Academy will surely help Ulysses grow, but at the same time, I can’t shake the feeling that something ominous might happen.

Most importantly… that fiancée of Harold Weir Dehaubalz. She is the descendant of the one who slew our Norz God… or rather, it would be more accurate to say she is a compatriot. In any case, even after 300 years, the royal family of Dehaubalz continues to receive the favor of their people… It will not be a simple matter.

“Kasper, I leave the rest to you.” (Laertes)

“Leave it to me. I will support the young master… the true king… without fail.” (Kasper)

“Good.” (Laertes)

I nodded as I looked at the attendant, Casper, then opened the drawer of my desk and took out a dagger.

This is the symbol of a king, a weapon only allowed to those who bear the name Hazaknut.

“Ulysses… may you finally… have happiness in your future.” (Laertes)

With that, I drew the dagger from its sheath, held it to my neck, and ended my over 300 years… of life.

Well that happened… Part of the passage felt contradictory with the father saying he wanted his son to restore the glory but also saying they had no plans of rebellion. Also he said something won’t be easy since the chevaliers still support the kingdom or something which also feels contradictory to his statement of not rebelling.
