Fifth of Seven Mysteries (6): Reason to Search for Seven Mysteries

“Hey, why don’t we take a break?” (Rick)
The truth about Heinz, the reason for hiding the file, the purpose behind it, why Lite and Lev entered the school, and even the reason for the war, which normally wouldn’t have been revealed to the students. All this information was thrown at us one after another, leaving us a bit confused. So, Rick’s suggestion was quite appreciated.
In preparation for times like this, snacks and tea were already set aside. Of course, I, didn’t prepare it. It was Heinz. Despite being royalty, he was a considerate man.
As I nibbled on a cookie and sipped the lukewarm tea, a sigh of relief naturally escaped me.
“Just to confirm, is it alright to speak to Heinz as we have been so far, degozaru?” (Hana)
Hana asked while nibbling on a cookie.
“Of course. One of the reasons I kept my status hidden was because it would be a hassle if people started being overly formal with me.” (Heinz)
Heinz answered, crunching on a cookie.
“That’s fine, then.” (Hana)
Hana easily agreed and continued munching on her cookie.
I suddenly recalled something Saras-senpai once said.
“That’s exactly it. That kind of attitude is really valuable. Even if Lamie asks people to call her by a nickname, once the name of the Lavitomivia family comes up, most people would hesitate.” (Saras)
The laid-back atmosphere in 1-C, where the nobles don’t flaunt their status, was what made it possible. Among them, our group, Catrap, self-acknowledged to be the most laid-back, with no particular ambition to rise. Even though Heinz is the nephew of a princess from a neighboring country, if he says it’s fine, then “That’s fine” settles it. That’s just how we are.
After Hana’s question, everyone relaxed their minds, sipping tea and chatting about trivial things. Lite took this chance to tease Frank, paying him back for his earlier comments. Lev, as always, quietly sipped her tea, exhaling with a soft “phew”.
Seeing the two of them, I couldn’t help but say, “Lite and Lev sure have it tough”. The two looked at me, confused.
Heinz was the one who responded to my words
“That’s true. It’s because of my selfishness, the two of them had to leave their classmates from back home and live in an unfamiliar place. Honestly, I do feel a little guilty about that.” (Heinz)
Lite and Lev exchanged a quick glance, and then Lite scratched his head as he responded to Heinz.
“Ah, Heinz, you don’t need to worry about it so much… Well, since we’re at it, I might as well tell everyone. Lev and I are orphans. We don’t even know what our parents look like. We grew up helping each other in an orphanage. Luckily, we had a talent for the military, so we were fortunate enough to enroll in this academy. So, when you said earlier, ‘Not only does it cover tuition, but also food and living expenses’, that’s really helping us out. Plus, not to brag in front of him, but if we stay on Heinz’s good side, our lives will be secure too.” (Lite)
It seemed that Heinz was hearing about Lite and Lev being orphans for the first time. He looked genuinely surprised. Then, he composed himself.
“I don’t know how much someone like me can do, but at the very least, I’m grateful for the cooperation you two have given so far.” (Heinz)
Everyone has their own stories, huh?
“Well, shall we continue?” (Heinz)
Heinz prompted us to sit up straight again.
“That being said, I think we’ve covered most of what there is to talk about… Does anyone have anything else?” (Heinz)
Heinz scanned the group as we crossed our arms and thought.
The first to raise her hand was Sonia.
“I was a little curious. Didn’t we all go see the unmoving statue and the artificial lake together? Why did you sneak off to investigate this time?” (Sonia)
“I see. It’s not just limited to this time. If there’s a Seven Mystery that might lead to a hidden room, I plan to use any excuse to buy time and investigate first.” (Heinz)
Next, Lite raised his hand.
“So… what happens if we find something that could end the war? Do we all go back home?” (Lite)
“No, at this point, I’m not planning to. Besides, that’s beyond what a kid like me can handle. It’s frustrating, but I’ll leave that to my father. I won’t force you or Lev, but I enjoy this life, and I like the Catrap crew. So, unless the situation changes, I’ll stay until graduation.” (Heinz)
“…That’s kind of embarrassing.” (Ratt)
Ratt-kun muttered, but the other members seemed to feel the same.
“…Can we also be part of this group?” (Lev)
Lev spoke for the first time in a while.
“Of course!” (Sonia)
Sonia replied, and Lev smiled happily.
Watching Lev, Lite said to Heinz.
“Yeah, so we’re not planning on returning to Remnos.” (Lite)
I raised my hand. Heinz gestured for me to continue.
“One more question? Does anyone at the academy know about Heinz’s status?” (Lux)
“Oh, the higher-ups at the academy definitely know. They probably don’t know my purpose, though. As for Fol-sensei, our homeroom teacher… I’m not sure. I don’t know.” (Heinz)
Heinz, then, asked us to keep this secret from Rita-san and Lulu-san, mentioning that they might already know and were just watching to see what would happen.
For now, I didn’t plan on telling Rita-san about any of this either.
Once the conversation paused, Frank spoke up.
“So, shall we get to the main event?” (Frank)
“The main event?” (Heinz)
Heinz tilted his head in confusion as Frank spread his arms wide, as if to say, “Come on”.
“Of course, it’s about the hidden room. We’re going to search for it, right? Even counting the Fifth Mystery, we’ve got three more to find. Let’s get serious about this!” (Frank)
Even Frank, who seemed the least interested in the Seven Mysteries, spoke up.
It was something we all shared.

*Today’s Diary*
It’s been a long, long day since my conversation with Heinz last night.
By the time Heinz’s confession was over, it was already dark outside. So, we decided to postpone the investigation of the Fifth Mystery until the next day off when we could give it our full attention. In the meantime, we’d prioritize gathering information by checking the school newspaper files that had been returned to the old school building’s library.
While Heinz’s situation is important, there was one big relief for me today.
It was about Lite and Lev. I’d been cautious around them ever since our first encounter (even though it was one-sided), but after spending time with them, I found that they’re really good guys. From now on, I think I can hang out with them without any worries.
But I’m so tired. No wonder, considering I snuck out last night to confront Heinz.
There’s so much to write, but I’ll finish this and get to bed quickly.
