Marie’s Rebellion

“Marie-sama, how did it go? Marie-sama.” (??)

A nun called out to Marie, who had returned to the church in a daze. Brought back to herself by those words, Marie was suddenly overwhelmed by various emotions and burst into tears like a fire had been lit.

“I just want to die already!” (Marie)

She had experienced an unthinkable level of humiliation and had been shown, undeniably, how powerless she was. For the first time in her life, Marie began to question the very meaning of her existence. Seeing Marie sobbing uncontrollably, the nun, who had realized the outcome, embraced her and cried together.

“Poor Marie-sama. Why hasn’t Marquis Raiha come to help? Marie-sama is all alone in the capital, standing up to Leo-sama. It’s just too sad.” (Sister)

Marquis Raiha, Marie’s fiancé. However, having been defeated in battle against Leo, the marquis quickly fled back to his own territory, bypassing the royal capital where Marie remained. Now that the royal family’s prestige had fallen, their engagement might as well be forgotten.

“Arc-sama… Arc Warden-sama…” (Marie)

Marie unconsciously called out a single name. Baron Warden. He was the one who had rescued Marie from the royal palace under the Habarov summons. The first person who had seen her as Marie, not just a princess. He probably thought it was nothing more than a brief encounter. But if… if he came to save her…

“Marie-sama. May I come in?” (??)

“Marie-sama is quite distressed right now. Perhaps after she’s calmed down.” (??)

“It is an urgent message.” (??)

The person who spoke and entered was Zenon, a high priest. Marie hurriedly wiped her tears and had the sister step back.

“I bring a secret letter from Louis-sama, who is being sheltered by Elector Lashion.” (Zenon) “From Louis-oniisama?” (Marie)

Marie broke the seal on the letter and read its contents. Without a doubt, it was Louis’ handwriting.

“This is…” (Marie)

“What does it say?” (Zenon)

“Louis-oniisama is planning to rebel against Leo-niisama. He’s urging me to join him. But why would he ask someone like me?” (Marie)

“Marie-sama, you have a strong connection with the church. Your support would effectively mean the support of 90% of the Laplace faithful in this country. Your decision could greatly influence the situation.” (Zenon)

With Zenon’s words, Marie realized that she still held an important position. Despite what Leo had said to her, she was still a princess. Even if the prestige of the royal family had crumbled, she still had value as a figurehead.

Indeed, Leo’s outrageous actions needed to be stopped as soon as possible. However, should she really join Louis’ rebellion? If Marie, who was under the church’s protection, became involved in the rebellion, the conflict would no longer be limited to a struggle among nobles. It would undoubtedly lead to a large-scale civil war. Wouldn’t her decision lead to the deaths of many innocent people who didn’t need to die? Marie hesitated.

“Th-this is terrible!” (??)

At that moment, the priests standing guard outside came rushing in, panicked.

“The fire has spread to the church! We must evacuate immediately!” (??)

“Curse that Leo. How dare he treat God’s representatives this way!” (Zenon)

Zenon, furious, issued orders to the priests. Then, turning back to Marie, he pressed her to make a decision.

“Marie-sama. Please decide. Join hands with Louis-sama and overthrow Leo.” (Zenon)

“But… if there is a battle, many innocent people who don’t deserve to die will perish. Would God truly be pleased with this?” (Marie)

“Marie-sama. Indeed, if the battle begins, 100,000 people could die within a year. But if we leave the governance to Leo, 10 million will die over the next 10 years. Furthermore, the battle to defeat Leo would be a holy war. Those who die will surely be received into heaven by God.” (Zenon)

“But…” (Marie)

Zenon took a deep breath, as if trying to calm his frustration, and presented Marie with the final choice.

“Marie-sama. The fire is approaching. Will you hide in the basement and overlook Leo’s tyranny? Or will you flee the capital and join Louis-sama to save the kingdom? In the end, the decision is yours.” (Zenon)

Marie looked down at her hands. Clean, unblemished hands that had never been soiled. She now realized that she had been able to remain this way because of the efforts of her father and everyone around her. Now, with her father’s fate unknown, she had to decide for herself and take responsibility for that decision.

Marie finally made up her mind.

“I will escape the capital. Prepare a horse.” (Marie)
