Suppression (2)

(Thank you for reading at bayabuscotranslation.com)

“Randal… everyone is getting more and more frustrated. You need to do something soon.” (??)

“Do something? What exactly should I do?! What can I do!!” (Randal)

One month had passed since they were completely surrounded. Randal, irritated by his comrade’s words, raised his voice in frustration.

At last, the food had started to run out. To conserve even a little, they reduced the number of meals from 2 to 1 per day, and the amount of food per meal was also reduced. However, because there was nothing to eat in the first place, the peasants who had joined the rebellion were naturally growing more dissatisfied, and deserters were appearing one after another. The rebel army was slowly but surely falling apart.

“If this continues, we won’t have the strength left to fight even if the enemy attacks.” (??)

As Randal was holding his head in his hands, a report came in from one of his comrades on watch.

“Randal-sama! Enemy soldiers have come right up close to the castle and are shouting something!” (??)

When Randal climbed up onto the castle wall, the watchman, who had been looking exhausted, hastily saluted. All the rebels, having heard the news, gathered on the castle walls to listen. There were two enemy soldiers, a man and a woman. They wore splendid armor, so they were likely soldiers of quite a high rank.

“Oh, look at that. You all seem so quiet now. What happened to all that spirit you had at the beginning?” (Tyr)

The man taunted Randal and his group, who were silently watching. Randal, who had been staring blankly, came to his senses.

“What did you come here for?” (Randal)

“Listen. I am Tyr Warden, the commander of the current punitive force.” (Tyr)

The rebel army began to stir at those words. They had heard the name of the enemy commander, but this was their first time seeing him in person. To think the commander would come directly.

“Well now, what business does the commander have coming here in person?” (Randal)

“I don’t care at all whether you rebels live or die. My only goal is to quell this rebellion.” (Tyr)

Tyr continued.

“If you surrender to me, I will spare your lives. And I’ll make sure you have plenty of food to eat.” (Tyr)

“Do you think anyone would believe such nonsense?” (Randal)

At the mention of food, Randal’s body involuntarily reacted. Naturally, the enemy had completely grasped what was tormenting the rebels. There was no way to hide it.

“Oh, you don’t have to believe me. But if you keep holed up in that castle, your food will run out, and death will surely come. Whether you trust me or wait to starve to death in that castle is your choice.” (Tyr)

“We started this rebellion fully prepared to die. Do you think we would surrender so easily?!” (Randal)

“Is that so? How about the rest of you, then?” (Tyr)

Ignoring Randal’s angry shout, Tyr began speaking to the other rebels peeking out from behind the castle walls.

“I’m not just talking to your leader there. Maybe the leader doesn’t get it since he’s been eating plenty, but I can see quite a few of you are so malnourished you could collapse at any moment. If you want to eat your fill, you’re welcome to come over to us at any time.” (Tyr)

Hearing such words when they were starving would make anyone hesitate. For those who had joined the rebellion in the first place to survive because they could no longer endure their feudal lord’s oppression, the temptation of being able to eat to their heart’s content if they surrendered was too stimulating. At this point, they didn’t even know what they were fighting for anymore.

I need to silence this man quickly.

Randal’s mind went completely blank. Cold sweat would not stop pouring down his body. The rebel army, which had repeatedly defeated the suppression forces and taken down numerous commanders, was now on the verge of collapsing from just a few words.

What should I do…

Something reflected in the face of Tyr, who had been watching leisurely. In the next instant, Hal, who had been standing beside Tyr, stepped in front of him and drew her sword. The sound of swords clashing echoed, and a dagger rolled to the ground. When Tyr looked in the direction the dagger had come from, there was Laika, who had somehow appeared and was glaring at Tyr with a fierce expression.

“Oh, the ‘Lightning of the Battlefield’ has made her appearance. Scary, scary.” (Tyr)

Tyr said in a slightly playful tone, and then loudly addressed the rebels on the castle wall one last time.

“Well then, the Warden Household will always welcome your surrender.” (Tyr)

With that, Tyr and Hal turned around and leisurely walked back. After Tyr had left, Laika ran up to Randal.

“Nii-chan!” (Laika)

“Ah, Laika. You saved me.” (Laika)

Randal patted Laika’s head with a weary voice. However, the rebels were visibly shaken. Given the ongoing food shortage, Tyr’s proposal certainly seemed attractive. If even their leader, Randal, felt that way, it was easy to imagine that more and more of the ordinary soldiers would seriously consider desertion.

“There will probably be more deserters from now on. Strengthen the watch.” (Randal)

With only those instructions to his comrades, Randal returned to his room. Randal himself hadn’t eaten anything for the past few days. Tyr’s actions had exhausted him even further, and he just wanted to rest as soon as possible.

While returning to their camp from Randal’s position, Tyr was being scolded nonstop by Hal.

“That was scary… scary… What was that? Who throws a dagger that accurately from so far away? Seriously.” (Tyr)

“That’s why I told you! To be careful of that girl who throws daggers. If I hadn’t been there, you’d be up in heaven with the other commanders by now! Or maybe in hell.” (Hal)

“Don’t call me ‘you.’ And don’t send me to hell. But yeah, I’m glad you were there, Hal. I would have been dead without you.” (Tyr)

“Don’t joke about things like that. I told you, if you die, Tyr-sama, I’ll follow right after.” (Hal)

“Yes. I apologize for today.” (Tyr)

“If you let your guard down like that again, I won’t forgive you.” (Hal)

Hal was angry, but her eyes were red. She looked like she was about to cry.

“Hal, I was wrong. So don’t cry.” (Tyr)

“I’m not crying!” (Hal)

Even though Tyr apologized sincerely, Hal seemed embarrassed that it was obvious she was about to cry and turned away with a pout.
