Hypothesis Regarding Regional Differences

Iskamina drew a picture on the ground with a spade. It was a perfectly ordinary oval. It looked somewhat like an egg.

“This shall represent Zanzas’ dungeon, mogu.” (Iskamina)

“Hum, hum.” (Elt)

At that moment, Wood seemed intrigued and came to my side.

“Ugo, what is it?” (Wood)

“Hmm, it is nothing… but it seems that a new hypothesis has formed regarding the purpose of this underground passage. I am hearing it from Iskamina.” (Elt)

“Ugo! I want to hear it too, is that all right?” (Wood)

“Of course it is fine.” (Elt)

“Mogu! Please do listen, mogu!” (Iskamina)

Iskamina seemed to enjoy this.

Does she really like such things? Well, perhaps she would not have thought of it otherwise.

In the very center of the oval, Iskamina drew another line.

Pointing along the oval with the spade, she spoke.

“Zanzas’ dungeon is a concentration point of the earth’s mana, a nodal point, mogu. Ordinary dungeons draw only the mana from their surroundings, mogu. But Zanzas’ dungeon, in a manner of speaking, borrows a little mana from all over the world, mogu.” (Iskamina)

“All of the world’s ten great labyrinths are described in the same way. That is why their scale and depth are extraordinary.” (Elt)

Iskamina nodded at my words.

“Furthermore, Zanzas’ dungeon is remarkably stable, mogu. One could liken it to a single, colossal magical apparatus, mogu.” (Iskamina)

“Ugo, that makes it very easy to understand!” (Wood)

“Yet there are almost no other dungeons that are as stable, mogu.” (Iskamina)

“Is that so?” (Elt)

“Zanzas’ dungeon existed at least a thousand years ago, mogu. The other world’s ten great labyrinths are far more unstable, with magic beasts overflowing and their structures collapsing, mogu. There are no such records for Zanzas, mogu.” (Iskamina)

I understood. It was unique, and that was why strange hypotheses could be formulated.

“Ugo, I did not know…” (Wood)

“Information about dungeons is often confidential, after all.” (Elt)

Even books contained little information about the deep areas of Zanzas’ dungeon. The other world’s ten great labyrinths also had very little data regarding their deepest areas.

“Mogu. And it seems that this underground passage may serve as a magical conduit, mogu. Like a straw piercing the side of the dungeon–…” (Iskamina)

“To draw out mana or to infuse it?” (Elt)

“That is correct, mogu! I believe this underground plaza may serve as a relay point, mogu.” (Iskamina)

“Ugo, it is indeed very spacious. It could be used for many purposes.” (Wood)

“Hum…” (Elt)

“We must investigate the details further, mogu. But the potential is considerable, mogu!” (Iskamina)

“I understand. Continued investigation is indeed necessary.” (Elt)

The truth was that nothing was certain yet. Each hypothesis had to be tested one by one to determine its validity.

“Piyo” (That is a difficult conversation) (Cockatrice)

“Piyo ppi…” (Monyu, monyu…) (Cockatrice)

“Ugo, what is it?” (Wood)

The cockatrices held pieces of Puzzle Mushrooms in their hands and chewed them as though they were snacks. They did not tire of them and seemed to enjoy eating them.

Even during this Puzzle Mushroom subjugation, the cockatrices helped complete the task efficiently. Usually gentle and calm, when motivated they were astonishing. It was easy to understand why they were revered in folk songs and heraldry.

“Piyo…?” (Will you eat?) (Cockatrice)

The distant-eyed cockatrice offered a piece of Puzzle Mushroom.

“Very well, I will take it.” (Elt)

I reached out my hand, and the distant-eyed cockatrice gently placed a piece of Puzzle Mushroom into it.

Wood and Iskamina were also offered pieces.

“Piyo, piyo?” (Will you eat too?) (Cockatrice)

“Ugo, I will eat too!” (Wood)

“Mogu. I will take it, mogu!” (Iskamina)

The Puzzle Mushrooms were distributed among us. I put a piece into my mouth.

*Monyu, monyu monyu monyu.*

The texture remained the same.

It was soft and springy.

Hmm? Wait a moment.

“Piyo?” (Have you noticed?) (Cockatrice)

The distant-eyed cockatrice had a proud expression. It was adorable. But I understood what it meant. The more I chewed, the more distinct the difference became.

It may be a small difference, but–…

“Ugo, is it just my imagination?” (Wood)

“Probably, it is correct, mogu.” (Iskamina)

Wood and Iskamina seemed to share the same impression. They tilted their heads while chewing monyu monyu. I spoke with certainty.

“Yes, the flavor has become slightly richer.” (Elt)
