Tranquil Late Night

Healberry Village.
Wood and I had just finished our bath and were feeling warm as we settled into our bedtime routine.
“Ugo ugo, that felt so good.” (Wood)
“It did. The new bath additive was quite pleasant.” (Elt)
The bath additive we used today was a product sold by the Zanzas Apothecary Guild. It supposedly contained small amounts of monster-derived ingredients that were effective for stiff shoulders and back pain.
“Ugo, it also smelled like herbs.” (Wood)
“That seems to be part of it as well. It has a calming fragrance.” (Elt)
“Ugo, I want to use it again.” (Wood)
“I liked it too. Let us order more.” (Elt)
Wood’s fondness for basking in the sun and taking baths was probably my influence. Finding joy in such simple, everyday moments was important.
We prepared some tea and sat together on the sofa in the living room. Tea after a bath was always the best, allowing one to relax completely.
“By the way, how was your combat training today?” (Elt)
“Ugo ugo, I learned a lot. Umm, about swords and bows and such.” (Wood)
“So, you were taught many things. How was it?” (Elt)
Wood then began to speak cheerfully. He had trained with several kinds of wooden weapons. According to the adventurer in his thirties, Wood’s physical abilities already exceeded those of an A-rank adventurer. However, his combat skills still had room for improvement. In actual sparring, he still could not defeat the adventurer in his thirties or Hattori.
“Ugo ugo, those two are amazing. I can see their movements, but I cannot keep up.” (Wood)
“They seem to be on another level, even among those in Zanzas.” (Elt)
Leia was probably very strong as well, but the Leia I usually saw spent far more time holding plush toys than wielding weapons, so I could not be certain.
“Ugo, Kaa-san said that when she returns, so I should ask her about many things.” (Wood)
“Hmm, that sounds good. Stella can do almost anything, and when it comes to swords, I can teach you too.” (Elt)
I was told that I had talent, but I lacked real combat experience. The best thing to do was to learn from adventurers themselves.
“Ugo ugo, then can you teach me tomorrow night?” (Wood)
“Yes, that will be fine.” (Elt)
As Wood and I talked about such things, the night grew deeper. Eventually, our conversation shifted toward Stella and the others.
“Ugo, do you think Kaa-san and the others are doing well?” (Wood)
“Well, with Hold-niisan and Nana there, I am sure they are fine.” (Elt)
Stella was usually calm, but when it came to things she enjoyed, she could become quite enthusiastic. Although there was a faint sense of worry, it was not as though she was going among complete strangers. Everything would work out somehow.
“Once the art festival is over, it will be spring.” (Elt)
“Ugo, it will be warm.” (Wood)
“There are still many things to look forward to, such as Marude-creatures, the underground passage, and other new products. We will have plenty to do in spring as well.” (Elt)
“Ugo, I am excited.” (Wood)
There had also been talk in Zanzas about river transport. It might not directly concern our village, but it was worth keeping an eye on. And then there was the matter of inheritance, which also concerned me. I had only one Nii-san left, Victor.
To be honest, I had no idea what Victor was thinking these days. From what I remembered, he had always been the type to live rather impulsively. He would suddenly gather us younger brothers and lead us into the backyard, or show up in my room to hand me a book, then borrow another one in exchange. Yet, despite his whimsical behavior, he somehow managed to avoid scolding from Otou-sama, the butler, or the maids. From a young age, he had been gifted in both academics and mana, and he was treated as someone special, or so I remembered.

While I was lost in thought, Wood placed his hand on my shoulder.
“…Ugo, Tou-san, are you thinking about something difficult?” (Wood)
“Ah, yes, I suppose I was. I was just lost in thought.” (Elt)
I gave a slight shake of my head. Thoughts about my family home always seemed to draw me in too deeply. I gently stroked the hand Wood had placed on my shoulder. It felt slightly rough, yet warm and comforting.
“…Shall we go to sleep now? We will be exploring the underground passage again tomorrow.” (Elt)
“Ugo, let us do that.” (Wood)
Wood cheerfully produced cotton, forming his usual soft bed. In the distance, I thought I could hear the hoot of an owl. The number of clear days had been increasing lately.
After tidying away the tea, the two of us wrapped ourselves in the cotton and settled in to sleep. Our bodies still held a pleasant warmth, and drowsiness soon followed.
“Good night, Wood.” (Elt)
“Ugo, good night.” (Wood)
And thus, another peaceful day came to an end.
