Obstacle in the Hole

The underground plaza.

The battle had lasted for more than 30 minutes, but at last, the end was in sight. Only about a quarter of the Puzzle Mushrooms remained.

“Ugogoo!” (Wood)

Wood hurled a red Puzzle Mushroom toward another of the same color.

“✕○△ー!”

The Puzzle Mushroom flashed with light and collapsed where it stood.

“Piyoo!” (Hei!) (Cockatrice)

“Piyoyo~!” (Take this!) (Cockatrice)

The Cockatrice too was fighting valiantly, its eyes shining brightly as it dashed about the field. It carried the Puzzle Mushrooms on its back and kept tossing them around. Apparently, the Puzzle Mushrooms were nothing more than food to it. It showed no sign of fear at all. Its eyes continued to glow the entire time. That thing was surprisingly efficient.

As I pondered this for a brief moment, someone called out to me.

“There seems to be a passage over that way, Elt-sama!” (Adventurer)

“The wind is flowing from there, degozaru!” (Hattori)

The adventurer in his thirties and Hattori pointed toward the far end that had been cleared. The light from the moss was dim, making it difficult to see, but there did seem to be a faintly visible passage leading deeper inside.

“Piyoo?” (Feh?) (Cockatrice)

Following the movement of the adventurer’s finger, the Cockatrice turned to face that direction.

*Pepekaa*

At that moment, the hole beyond was clearly illuminated. As expected of the Cockatrice’s eyes, it perfectly revealed the view ahead. Indeed, just like the one we had passed through before, there was a stone passageway continuing to the far side.

So, there is still a path leading further onward. However, that is not all.

“Ugo, Tou-san…! From beyond that hole!” (Wood)

Wood had noticed it as well.

Yes, as the hole beyond is illuminated, a blue Puzzle Mushroom slowly reveals itself. Most likely, the passage beyond leads closer to the third floor of Zanzas dungeon. If that is the case, it is only natural that Puzzle Mushrooms would come from that direction.

“It seems they are coming from there. We need to block it off for now. Otherwise, we will be forced to keep fighting endlessly.” (Elt)

The adventurer immediately agreed with my words.

“Yeah, it’s about time to call it quits for this one! No need to push our luck!” (Adventurer)

“Ugo, but how?” (Wood)

It was Wood who voiced the question. However, I had plant-based magic at my disposal. Creating something on the spot was hardly an issue.

For this occasion, yes, this would do nicely.

I spoke with confidence.

“Leave it to me.” (Elt)

I focused mana into my arm and invoked the magic.

[Green Armament]

It had been a while since I last used this magic. Still, it activated properly.

As I visualized, wooden shields appeared one after another. Yes, wooden shields, materializing one by one.

“Hey, that’s the same magic you used when you were the Flower Archer, ain’t it!?” (Adventurer)

“I see, I understand now, degozaru!” (Hattori)

Seeing the shields I created, the two immediately recalled it. Exactly as expected.

Then, Wood tilted his head.

“Ugo… use them as obstacles?” (Wood)

“Exactly, Wood.” (Elt)

I nodded, drawing upon knowledge from my previous life.

The strength of a Puzzle Mushroom was roughly equal to that of an adult human, specifically a tall man like myself. In other words, that was the limit of its power. Moreover, it lacked dexterous hands and any sense of coordination.

In the game, when obstacles were placed, they would simply wander about in confusion. That was the key difference from the Flower Archer, who could not be stopped by mere obstacles.

“All right, let’s haul these over and plug that hole!” (Adventurer)

“A temporary blockade, degozaru!” (Hattori)

The adventurers carried the wooden shields I had created, moving quickly and efficiently thanks to their strength.

“Piyoyo!” (Support!) (Cockatrice)

“Piyoo!” (There it goes!) (Cockatrice)

The Cockatrice also assisted them. Or rather, it seemed to understand our intentions perfectly.

Truly, what a clever little creature.

Meanwhile, I continued to produce more shields.

“Ugo, I’ll help too!” (Wood)

Wood gathered several shields in his arms and ran toward the hole.

Soon, the hole was almost completely blocked by the stacked shields.

“Let’s go!” (Adventurer)

“Just a little more, degozaru!” (Hattori)

“Ugooo!!” (Wood)

Wood pushed the shields into the hole until it was completely sealed.

“△✕✕○ー!?” (Puzzle Mushroom)

From the other side of the hole came the cries of Puzzle Mushrooms, but the piled shields did not so much as tremble.

We would observe for a moment, and if nothing happened, the sealing would be complete.

Well, it would likely be fine.

“All right, now we just need to deal with the remaining Puzzle Mushrooms!” (Elt)

““Yeah!”” (Adventurer/Hattori)
