Chapter 150

Author’s Note: This happened the day before the destruction of the ‘Goblin Settlement.’

Having been hunting goblins nonstop lately, I decided to relax today with Muze and wander leisurely through the fourth layer. The shimmering surface of the water made it the perfect place for a quiet stroll. From time to time, we released goblins into the lake or defeated them, spending the day in tranquility.

“Ahh, such peace.” (Kouta)

“Indeed? The goblin you tossed into the lake earlier is still drowning, you know?” (Muze)

The splashing sounds were slightly distracting.

Should I go finish it off? I had thrown it in for a reason, after all. Oh well. Complete silence would be dull anyway.

“Wasn’t it around here that I first met you, Muze?” (Kouta)

“Yes! Around that rock! I can remember it as though it were yesterday!” (Muze)

“Well, it wasn’t that long ago.” (Kouta)

Barely two months had passed, though much had happened in that time.

“Muze, do you ever feel homesick for this lake?” (Kouta)

“Not at all!” (Muze)

She said that with such innocent surprise that I couldn’t help but smile.

I suppose I also rarely feel like returning home myself.

“What did you do all day when you lived here?” (Kouta)

“Hmm? I drifted!” (Muze)

…What did she mean by that?

“Wait, there’s hardly any current in this lake, right?” (Kouta)

“Oh, but there is! The surface may seem calm, but underwater it is a raging torrent!” (Muze)

That couldn’t be true. I have never heard such a thing.

“The water spirits manipulate the flow however they please. It becomes quite wild down there!” (Muze)

So, it is their fault.

“I often found myself rolling along the bottom before I realized it!” (Muze)

You were rolling along the lakebed that often?

“It was my only amusement! Either I let myself drift, or I slept!” (Muze)

What a life. Both literally and figuratively adrift. Such free-spirited beings, these water spirits.

“So then, are you happy now?” (Kouta)

“Yes! Thanks to you, Master, I laugh every day!” (Muze)

Perhaps I should release her.

“When my abs become toned, it will be your fault, Master!” (Muze)

That much?

“I don’t think life with me is that funny!” (Kouta)

“Not true! Watching your battles with Emilia is always thrilling! How long will you keep escaping from that carnivorous woman? Ah, my heart races every time!” (Muze)

Right, into the lake she goes. She’s a water spirit, she’ll be fine.

“Ubyoooooo!?” (Muze)

I threw her with all my strength for the first time in a while.

“Ow… Even with my level up, moving full power still hurts. Defense has increased, but strain doesn’t vanish.” (Kouta)

Still, that was quite a throw. She must have landed by now, though I couldn’t even hear the splash.

“Oh?” (Kouta)

Muze skimmed gracefully back across the surface of the water.

How did she do that?

“That was cruel! Cruel, Master! To throw me so suddenly, heartless!” (Muze)

“So, it’s fine if I warn you first?” (Kouta)

“Yes! Humans have such games, do they not? Though perhaps it is not quite enjoyable for me. No, maybe on a surface lake it would be fun!” (Muze)

“Please don’t drink the entire lake dry. Everyone would be upset.” (Kouta)

“I’ll only take a teeny tiny sip!” (Muze)

That is definitely a lie, or perhaps just mischief. Muze usually did as she was told, so she is probably only teasing me.

I reached out and gently ruffled her hair. Peaceful moments like this were rare. She squealed happily.

“But coming to the fourth layer always reminds me of that treasure chest.” (Kouta)

“Yes! You blew it up splendidly!” (Muze)

“Sorry about that. It wasn’t intentional.” (Kouta)

“All the more reason it was funny! That was true entertainment. Ah, Master, calm down! Don’t drink all the water!” (Muze)

I chugged my bottled water in retaliation.

“How cruel! So cruel! I’ll rebel!” (Muze)

Pouting, Muze stuffed my rice ball lunch into her mouth. She trembled as she forced it down, clearly suffering.

“Muze, don’t force yourself.” (Kouta)

“Bweh…” (Muze)

She spat it back out. I collected it again, like when a small child spits out vegetables they dislike. Waste not, want not. I ate it myself.

“Rebelling is hard work…” (Muze)

I quietly picked her up and stroked her back.

“I was immature too. Sorry.” (Kouta)

“Muze also went too far with teasing.” (Muze)

Thus, we made up.

“That reminds me.” (Muze)

“Of what?” (Kouta)

“When I was rolling on the lakebed, I once saw a treasure chest.” (Muze)

Seriously?
