Dashing Through the Tornado

*Suzazazazaaa!!*

Within the white tornado, Stella and her companions ran nimbly straight through.

“Piyo piyo piyo! This is absolutely amazing, piyo!” (Dia)

“Take that!” (Stella)

At this moment, Stella was riding upon the back of Nana, who was lying flat upon her stomach. Yes, Nana at present was akin to a snowboard beneath Stella.

“Chochchochooo!” (Nana)

“I am sliding all over the place, you know!” (Marcosias)

The interior of the tornado was a succession of frozen slopes. The snow and ice that had been swept up formed a course, and Stella and her companions, wreathed in red light, were sliding upon it at tremendous speed. And pressing in from all directions was a swarm of Ice Crystals.

If one were to extend a hand, the Ice Crystals would be within reach, and from time to time they flashed and emitted pale blue freezing beams. Yet, to the superhuman Stella, everything was visible. Not only those in front, but even beams fired from her sides or from behind failed to graze Stella and her companions in the slightest.

“Eeei!” (Stella)

“Chooo!?” (Nana)

However, avoidance would be impossible without employing various techniques. While sliding, Stella deftly shifted her weight by manipulating both feet. Nana, sliding forward, began to spin.

*Kurukuru kuruuu!*

She spun in place.

“I am spinning, piyo!” (Dia)

“This is an ultra technique!” (Marcosias)

Dia and Marcosias rejoiced, while Nana, bewildered, continued her rotations. Nay, she had no choice but to spin. As a vampire with strong semicircular canals, she did not become dizzy from such things.

“How are you doing that!?” (Nana)

“It is an application of the technique for walking upon water!” (Stella)

“Such a thing exists…!?” (Nana)

“I shall teach you next time. In short, the knack for walking upon water also applies to walking upon ice!” (Stella)

Since ice too was water, it could be traversed smoothly if one channelled mana through it. This was a principle emphasized by every school of thought throughout the ages. That was to say, one must secure the advantage of terrain. Stella’s fighting style was not a brainless strategy of brute force. She placed her focus upon exerting her full strength to the utmost. That Nana had become a snowboard was nothing more than a coincidence. Nothing else nearby could serve as a board. And in Stella’s hands were grasped her beloved pair of bats, Durandal and Fragarach.

“And so, what are we to do now? A proper attack has no effect!” (Nana)

“Yes, indeed…!” (Stella)

No matter how tremendous Stella’s power, the swarm of Ice Crystals was troublesome. According to Nana’s assessment, even Stella could not exceed the restorative force of the Ice Crystals. Attack them, and they would immediately return to their original state.

“There!” (Stella)

Crying out, Stella flashed her two bats.

*Kakkiiinn, kakiin!*

The Ice Crystals dancing through the air were struck and flung away.

“With that attack…” (Nana)

“Yes, of course the Ice Crystals will not shatter. However…” (Stella)

*Kakkiiin, kakikakikakikakkiiin!*

The Ice Crystals Stella had struck ricocheted throughout the tornado. Unbroken, they continued to bounce until their momentum waned. And then–…

Pikii!!

At a certain point, the impact upon one Ice Crystal reached its limit, and it emitted a white light.

“Piyo…!? Something seems to have broken, piyo?” (Dia)

“They were struck over and over again, and something must have happened up above, you know?” (Marcosias)

Nana craned her head back as far as she could and was astonished. Her eyes clearly beheld it that the instant when a small portion of the swarm of Ice Crystals separated from the tornado. It was a sight she had never before seen.

“Such a thing…!? The swarm was disassembled!?” (Nana)

“Only a little, but yes. It has worked.” (Stella)

Indeed, what had been disassembled was only a minute part of the tornado. Nevertheless, to sever even a portion of Ice Crystals of this scale should have required a tremendous effort.

Stella had accomplished it alone.

“What has happened, piyo?” (Dia)

“The junction where the Ice Crystals are bound together by mana… I struck and collapsed it.” (Stella)

“That is utterly absurd… such a thing cannot ordinarily be done.” (Nana)

“Well, one must manage to strike the moving Ice Crystals against one another. Without this vroom state, it would be reckless.” (Stella)

Stella nodded firmly.

“In this state, I can send them to the best position, and… there!” (Stella)

Kakkiin, kakiin!!

Once more, Stella swung both bats. Her swing caught the Ice Crystals and sent them soaring upward.

*Kakikakikakikakkiin!!*

Another chain reaction occurred, and with white light, a small cluster of Ice Crystals split away.

*Piki…!!*

“The other matter is that these separated clusters must still be destroyed. My attack has only divided them.” (Stella)

“…No, in that case, it will be fine.” (Nana)

Nana thrust one wing toward the outside of the tornado. Beyond the white tornado, faintly visible, was a dark silhouette. Its size was considerable. Dia recognized that black figure.

“…A crow, piyo? A large crow, piyo?” (Dia)

“It is far too large.” (Marcosias)

“That is…!” (Nana)

Nana recognized that silhouette.

“I sense powerful mana.” (Stella)

Immediately after Stella spoke, numerous smaller bird-like shadows were released from the black silhouette.

[Shadow Magic: Black Bird]

They struck the separated clusters of Ice Crystals, shattering them into tiny shards of ice.

“Magic, piyo!” (Dia)

“It is shadow magic, you know.” (Marcosias)

“Yes… that is someone of my family, my elder brother’s magic.” (Nana)

“Your Nii-san… Nana’s!?” (Stella)

Stella swallowed hard. If he were Nana’s brother, then he must be a great noble without a doubt. Yet more than such matters or shadow magic, something else troubled her.

“…This is bad.” (Stella)

So, Stella thought.

At this very moment, Stella was riding squarely upon Nana’s back, sliding as though upon a snowboard.

If she were to see Nana in such a state, what would he think…?
