Thread

(Thank you for reading at bayabuscotranslation.com)

Gathering Wood’s cotton, prepare it to be made into thread. Each color was wonderful, and it would become good thread. Meanwhile, Dia was playing, sticking only her head out from the brown cotton. It was a scene somehow familiar.

“Piyo! I’m imitating soil bath, piyo!” (Dia)

“It suits you.” (Marcosias)

Marcosias gently puffed and rubbed Dia along with the brown cotton. Dia was delightfully chirping.

“Piyo… it’s nice, piyo. There are many different colors, it’s fun, piyo!” (Dia)

Certainly, such a variety of colors might be rare. There are books, but those cannot be touched. Let’s save a little cotton for Dia.

After finishing producing thread in sixteen colors, Wood tilted his head.

“…Ugo, but the amount that can be produced does not seem to change much.” (Wood)

“I see. So, the total amount of cotton that can be produced does not change.” (Elt)

“Ugo ugo, it seems so…” (Wood)

“No, it’s fine. Thank you. This amount is sufficient.” (Elt)

Wood’s cotton has a daily limit.

And actually, when compacted, it does not become that much volume. It would be difficult to mass-produce as fabric, but for thread it should be enough. Using Marude-cotton as the base, embroider with Wood’s cotton thread. This is probably the best approach at this moment.

“Jii…” (Stella)

Stella took the cotton in her hands, looking quite serious. Undoubtedly, various colors were being mixed in her mind, constructing the next form of the uniform.

Until Hold-niisan arrives, just a little more. Until then, I will do my best too.

The next day.

Victor stared intently at the great river. Unfortunately, today the wind was strong and the weather was rainy. Raindrops began falling sporadically, and by now they had grown quite heavy. However, Victor remained in the costume. This was actually the first rain since he began waiting for the river Cockatrice. He felt something would happen today.

“There, the person in the costume I told you about…” (Knight)

Two shadows slowly approached Victor. One of them was the knight of the Black Dragon Knights they met yesterday. Apparently, he had faithfully brought his superior.

“Gahaha, it seems he is a noble… huh.” (Knight)

“Yes, he seems to possess mana. But since he has been staring at the river alone all this time…” (Knight)

“Well, suspicion is suspicion.” (Knight)

The knight had brought Belzel. Victor noticed this but did not particularly react. Waiting for the Cockatrice to appear was important. Belzel knew well this temperament of his brother.

Approaching slowly, he suddenly called out.

“Yo, Victor-nii!” (Belzel)

“Hah!?” (Victor)

The knight let out a startled voice in surprise.

Victor Nagash.

The eldest brother of the five great noble families, the Nagash Household. A genuine genius who gained a teaching position in monster studies as the youngest in the kingdom. He was said to be close to the chancellor’s faction and was sure to become a leading figure supporting the kingdom in the future. Or so he seemed not to be. He was a complete eccentric.

“T-this is a terrible discourtesy!” (Knight)

The knight bent his waist to bow, but Belzel waved his hand to stop him.

“Gahaha, don’t worry about it. Your brother probably didn’t introduce himself anyway, right?” (Belzel)

“It’s because it’s troublesome. I was glad you left that aside. Belzel, long time no see.” (Victor)

“Yeah, you look well. But can I say one thing?” (Belzel)

“What is it?” (Victor)

Victor tilted his head slightly, preparing to listen to Belzel.

“You could have brought someone along.” (Belzel)

“This costume appearance is somehow unpopular, so I don’t feel like bringing anyone.” (Victor)

Victor’s Cockatrice costume was the product of combining his financial power and knowledge. He prided himself that its quality rivaled even vampire-made ones. However, his retainers seemed not to like Victor wearing this costume. They said nothing openly, but he sensed their reluctant faces.

“…Still the same, huh.” (Belzel)

“As always. You look well too.” (Victor)

“Yeah, thanks to you.” (Belzel)

The knight nervously listened to their conversation. The Nagash Household currently had no decided heir. They were potentially rivals for succession.

“How is Hold? I haven’t seen him for a while.” (Belzel)

“He seems well. Apparently, he is holding some sort of art festival in the north.” (Victor)

“Hmm… I see.” (Belzel)

Although his voice sounded uninterested, Belzel knew the truth. If Victor really was uninterested, he would not have asked.

“And how about Elt? You met him, right?” (Belzel)

“…You knew? You’re a brother not to be underestimated.” (Victor)

“I have my own connections.” (Belzel)

The network among Monthly Piyo subscribers was wide. If it concerned the Cockatrice, there was an information network capable of grasping it instantly. Although they knew much about Elt’s village, they left it alone quietly.

“He seemed well. He had someone like a wife.” (Belzel)

“Hero Stella, huh.” (Victor)

“You know that too?” (Belzel)

“Do you think I don’t? Leaving aside uncertain legends, if you study Cockatrices, you cannot avoid that great person.” (Victor)

“I didn’t know that…” (Belzel)

“Then I will tell you now. Hero Stella laid the foundation for stable supply of Cockatrice feathers in Zanzas. Her nonviolent method has now greatly influenced adventurers. Indeed, monster studies as well.” (Victor)

“Nonviolent…?” (Belzel)

Belzel looked somewhat skeptical.

From what he had seen, Stella seemed stronger than any human.

“Because she has strength, she can think of ways that work even without force.” (Victor)

“Oh, when you put it that way, I understand…” (Belzel)

“There is more… hm!” (Victor)

Victor suddenly cut off his words and leaned forward toward the great river. Ahead of his gaze floated the group of river Cockatrices. They were swimming gently on the great river. This was exactly the moment Victor had been waiting for.

“Sorry, another time then.” (Victor)

“Hmm?” (Belzel)

Victor said so, then without hesitation threw himself into the great river.

*Splash splash*

Victor swam toward the Cockatrice group. Not to startle them, but as quickly as possible.

“Ah—” (Belzel)

As Victor quickly disappeared into the distance, Belzel let out a resigned voice. At this rate, he would not return to the shore for a while. Belzel knew this well from experience.

“Shall we go home?” (Belzel)

“…Yes.” (Knight)

Scratching his head, Belzel started to leave. Victor writing a thesis based on this research was another story.
