Boat Making

(Thank you for reading at bayabuscotranslation.com)

“I’m home~!” (Stella)

“I’m home, piyo!” (Dia)

By evening, Stella and Dia had returned.

“Welcome back, both of you.” (Elt)

“Munyaa… Welcome back, you know.” (Marcosias)

On my lap, Marcosias rubbed her face with her front paws. She had been dozing off, but it seemed she had woken up.

“…You bought quite a lot.” (Elt)

Stella was carrying a wooden basket filled with various items. They looked like files and hammers.

“Yes…! After hearing about boats, I thought we might try making one.” (Stella)

“Kaa-sama is going to make one, piyo!” (Dia)

“A boat…!?” (Elt)

I thought they had gone to see Leia, but the conversation suddenly leapt in a different direction.

No, perhaps Stella might actually be capable of it? She’s dexterous with her hands and also has strength.

However, Stella hurriedly denied it.

“Ah, no! It’s a small boat. It’s like a toy the size of your palm.” (Stella)

“One you float on water and play with, piyo!” (Dia)

Dia’s eyes were sparkling.

I see, a toy like that wouldn’t be a bad idea. But Stella intends to make it herself…?

“Therefore, Elt-sama, would you produce some cedar for me…!?” (Stella)

“Cedar… I do not mind, but…” (Elt)

The weakness of plant-based magic is that the further it is from the ground, the smaller and weaker the result becomes. The large tree house and tower are extremely powerful and effective examples of this type of magic. On the other hand, [Green Equipment] that I create directly in my hands require a strong image but are not very powerful.

So, I believe that directly producing a boat would be very inefficient. Probably, it would be better to mass-produce cedar itself.

“Something like this…” (Elt)

I focused mana into my hand.

Cedar, cedar… Since this only involves selecting a variety in my mind, it’s quite simple.

A faint green light gathered in my hand.

Then, a small cedar log appeared in my palm. It was about the size that could be held in one hand, perhaps a few kilograms.

“Ooh… That is cedar. The whole log…” (Stella)

“A board-like thing would be impossible.” (Elt)

I couldn’t visualize a cedar plank. As expected, manufactured items are difficult. Logs and branches can be easily materialized. Natural plants are simply selected with a “pop” in my mind.

“No, this is just fine. I will shave and cut it from here.” (Stella)

“I’ll do it, piyo!” (Dia)

“Sounds interesting, you know.” (Marcosias)

“So, you’re starting from scratch…” (Elt)

Thus began Stella’s craft workshop. I put down my book and went to watch.

“Ugo ugo, I’m home~” (Wood)

“Ah, welcome back.” (Elt)

Wood had returned at just the right time. He seemed to have been at the Large Tree Tower for quite a while.

Yes, yes, it’s good that he’s building his own connections.

“Ugo… A log?” (Wood)

“Yes, I am about to make a small boat…!” (Stella)

Stella bravely lifted the cedar log.

“…Ugo, Mother is?” (Wood)

“Back in the day, I used to build huts while gathering rare materials. Leave it to me!” (Stella)

“Amazing, piyo!” (Dia)

Adventurer survival skills are impressive. Well, if you are active outdoors for extended periods, that’s only natural. Rain shelters, insect repellent… making things on the spot is probably more effective.

“Umm, so wood shavings don’t scatter… Let’s spread a cloth…” (Stella)

She moved the table in the living room aside and laid out a large cloth.

Stella sat smoothly on top of it… and held a large knife.

“A big knife, piyo.” (Dia)

“Please be careful. If you apply too much force, it will break.” (Elt)

“Normally, it wouldn’t break.” (Wood)

“It breaks…!? Even mithril can snap with ease, you know…!” (Stella)

“You can break mithril that easily…?” (Elt)

Stella flinched.

Apparently, it really does break easily. Though normally it should not…

“A-Anyway… Let’s begin. Shaving the surface…” (Stella)

Clearing her throat, Stella began shaving the cedar.

*Zashuzhuzhu…!*

With an incredible noise, the cedar log began to change form. In no time, the outer bark was shaved off, and it took the shape of a rectangular beam.

“That was fast, piyo…” (Dia)

“Ugo, amazing…” (Wood)

Stella gave a smug “fufun” and looked quite pleased.

“Next, I will turn this into boards…! Ei!” (Stella)

Lifting the beam lightly into the air, she swung her knife through it a few times with a hyun hyun.

*Paka…*

The beam split into three and fell onto the cloth.

“Amazing, piyo~!” (Dia)

“Ugo… As expected of Mother…” (Wood)

That’s a rather absurd technique. It’s just like something out of a samurai story. Actually, with movements like that, she must be a top-class swordswoman.

“The cross-sections are beautiful, you know.” (Marcosias)

“Yeah, they’re split clean through.” (Elt)

“That went well…! Alright, let’s keep going~!” (Stella)

For the next hour, Stella demonstrated astonishing technique while making a small toy boat.

Yeah… I can only say it was amazing.

With everyone lively, Stella’s boat-making reached its climax. It was a streamlined kind of boat. She was assembling boards and joining them with small nails.

“Fuu… Something like this, perhaps…” (Stella)

Stella’s eyes were entirely serious as she sanded the sides with a file. The cedar boat was nearly complete.

“Piyo, piyo…” (Dia)

Dia was already unable to wait. Incidentally, next to Stella as she worked, there was a large tub filled with water. So, they could immediately float the boat and play with it. This carried a considerable amount of pressure. If it didn’t go well, the boat would sink right in front of everyone. No doubt an awkward mood would follow.

“Is it finished…?” (Elt)

“Ugo, what a pretty shape… A small boat!” (Wood)

“It’s a mini-boat, you know.” (Marcosias)

Lastly, Stella applied resin with light pats. Apparently, it was for preventing rot. After exhaling deeply, Stella raised the boat with both hands.

“Ta-da! It’s done…!” (Stella)

What she had completed was a splendid small boat. Streamlined, with a narrow tip and shallow bottom. Thanks to the polishing, the cedar grain gleamed beautifully.

Honestly, it looks quite cool…

“Here you go…!” (Stella)

“Let’s do it, piyo!” (Dia)

Dia reverently accepted the mini-boat from Stella and brought it over to the tub.

*Gulp*

Please float…

“…Piyo.” (Dia)

Dia slowly placed the mini-boat into the tub and let go.

*Plop plop…*

“It floated, piyo!” (Dia)

“Ohh, that’s great…!” (Elt)

“Yay~!” (Stella)

Stella high-fived everyone.

“Then, I will float too, piyo!” (Dia)

“Hm?” (Elt)

Saying that, Dia gently entered the large tub.

…Hm?

“Master is also floating, you know.” (Marcosias)

“I’m floating, piyo!” (Dia)

Apparently, Dia floats in water… Well, the cockatrice floated in the bath the other day. It is not all that strange, when you think about it.

*Plop plop…*

Floating on the water, Dia gently pushed the mini-boat back and forth with her wings.

How cute.

“This is so nice, piyo…” (Dia)

Dia murmured dreamily. She seemed completely satisfied. And Stella also watched her with a content smile.

“Someday, we’ll get a bigger ship too!” (Stella)

“…A bigger ship?” (Elt)

“I just asked Leia earlier. I said I’d pay, so I want a big… one the whole family can ride.” (Stella)

“O-Oh…” (Elt)

So, that was the main goal of the trip? Not to have a cockatrice boat made… Hmm… I should follow up with Leia later. A large ship carries many risks.

All waters are part of noble territories. Especially around here, that would mean the Liger Household. One of the Five Great Noble Houses. It is not wise to get involved lightly. I have heard rumors about Louise Liger, who acts as the intermediary with Zanzas…

She is supposedly a bit unhinged, and has the nickname “Storm Tiger”.
