To the Land of the Elves

Steven’s village.

Morning came, and it was time to depart. Lining up to see off Stella and her group were the village chief and members of the Black Dragon Knight Order.

“Thank you very much for last night… You taught us many things. Healberry Village seems like a truly interesting place.” (Village Chief)

The village chief wore a smiling face. And Stella’s group had already realized it. Nana, who had bought stones the night before, teased the village chief a little.

“You weren’t actually misunderstanding about Healberry Village, were you? You just said something interesting to use as a conversation piece.” (Nana)

“Heheeh, you saw right through me…” (Village Chief)

“Thanks to that, the conversation really took off though.” (Nana)

“A lord who buries people? No such person exists. Which is why it’s perfect for a story. If I made you uncomfortable, I apologize.” (Village Chief)

“I see, that makes sense. I learned something new, you know.” (Stella)

The village chief bowed his head politely. Radan also seemed to understand, wearing a look of agreement. Certainly, in this rural area with little in the way of entertainment, the affairs of distant villages made for prime conversation topics. Travelers unfamiliar with Healberry Village would no doubt latch onto the story. And those who knew about it would chime in to correct it. Either way, it served as good fodder for conversation.

“No, we should be the ones thanking you for being considerate. The food and the rooms were great.” (Stella)

Saying that, Stella glanced at Nana. Nana rustled around her belly area and pulled out a souvenir as a token of appreciation. Seeing that souvenir, the members of the Black Dragon Knight Order stiffened in fear. Of course, what Nana had taken out from her storage was a bat. Stella accepted the bat from Nana, then solemnly handed it to the village chief.

“This is a token of gratitude for your hospitality…!” (Stella)

The bat was smoothly passed over. The village chief accepted it for now, but looked confused and unsure.

“Th-thank you very much for your thoughtfulness. However, this is…?” (Village Chief)

“It’s a bat…!” (Stella)

Stella declared with firm conviction.

“It was of great help in defeating the Flower-type.” (Stella)

“O-oh…! How reliable! But this doesn’t seem to have any magical power. H-how was it used?” (Village Chief)

The village chief asked timidly, while Radan covered his face with his hand. Stella took the Durandal she had at her waist and assumed a stance.

“Like this…!” (Stella)

With a swoosh, Stella lightly swung.

“Ohoh… Quite impressive.” (Village Chief)

“Yes, we used it to bat back the seeds fired by the Flower-type!” (Stella)

“…Huh?” (Village Chief)

The village chief froze.

“No, no, no. There’s no way such a thing could be done…” (Village Chief)

“It can be done…!” (Stella)

Stella clenched her fist tightly. Her eyes were blazing with passion.

“Though, it’ll be difficult to master right away. There are various ways to swing it. We don’t have time for a detailed explanation, but if you contact the adventurer’s guild in Zanzas…” (Stella)

Faced with Stella’s rapid-fire and intense speech, the village chief nodded. His instincts told him it was best to just agree. Stella, looking satisfied, turned toward the members of the Black Dragon Knight Order.

“Well then, to the members of the Black Dragon Knight Order, we’ll be taking our leave. We pray for your success in battle.” (Stella)

“I’ll pray too, you know!” (Radan)

“There’s a lot I want to say, but… I’ll let it slide.” (Nana)

Radan nodded for the time being as well. He figured that was the safest option. Stella received another bat for proselytizing from Nana. It was a fluid motion. Stella tried handing the bat to Radan.

“…If it won’t be a burden, what do you think?” (Stella)

Radan… accepted it in silence.

From there, Stella’s journey continued. They vroomed away from the village and headed east, east. Fortunately, the weather wasn’t bad. Today, they could cover some distance. At one point, Stella came to a stop.

“So, we’re going to proceed this way? Over this river…” (Stella)

In front of the three of them flowed a large river. Boats could be seen sparsely on the water.

“Y-yeah, that’s right.” (Nana)

Nana’s voice from Stella’s back trembled a bit. Stella knew the reason why.

“…Vampires can’t swim, right?” (Stella)

“Yeah, I can’t swim either.” (Nana)

Nana declared flatly. In addition to sunlight, vampires were weak to water. Most vampires were hopeless at swimming.

“That costume isn’t waterproof, you know?” ([Swallow])

“It is waterproof. I can even dive in it. But that’s not the issue. It’s something instinctual…” (Nana)

“Then, we don’t have to force ourselves to vroom across this…” (Stella)

Stella turned around, but Nana shook her head.

“No, from here on, it’s a monster-infested zone with lots of villages. If we want to avoid confrontation, we’ll have to move in small segments. If we go over the river, it’s just boats, so it’s safe and fast.” (Nana)

“I see… Understood. If you get scared, please let me know.” (Stella)

“…It’s fine. This costume floats, after all.” (Nana)

And so, they vroomed along the river. They leapt into the sky, leaving behind a red trail. Then, just before hitting the water’s surface, Stella gathered her mana and kicked off the water. Nana was astonished by what she saw.

“Are you using the river as a springboard…!?” (Nana)

“Once you get used to it, it’s surprisingly fun!” (Stella)

While kicking off the water, they vroomed along the river, heading further and further east. By the time they stopped at another village, the surrounding scenery had changed quite a bit. The trees had become thicker, the bushes denser. There was no trace of chill in the air. They were entering a jungle-like region.

*Sniff sniff*

Marcosias sniffed the air.

“Healberry Village was something, but this area’s plant smell is amazing too.” (Marcosias)

“The land of the Elves gets a lot of rain, and it’s warm too. Plants grow really well here.” (Stella)

“Feels nostalgic. I was surprised when I first came here… Even now, I’m still amazed by how thick and abundant the greenery is.” (Nana)

Without any particular trouble, Stella’s group made it to the entrance of the Elven lands. By tomorrow, they should be able to reach Clarissa.

With deep emotion, Stella murmured…

“…It’s been a long time since I returned to my homeland.” (Stella)
