Chapter 11

(Thank you for reading at bayabuscotranslation.com)

Since the day I first went to the dungeon, I had been going there every day.

I didn’t deny that I had impure motives, like wanting to see those beautiful women I met on the first day again, or that the receptionist onee-san at the guild counter was really pretty. But even so, I still went to the dungeon every day and kept hunting goblins.

I had never imagined that my spring break at 15 years old would turn into something this bleak. I hid my body among the tall silvergrass and ambushed goblins that were acting alone from behind. I didn’t aim for a one-hit kill or some major achievement. I just charged at the biggest part of their body and stabbed straight in. With this, I didn’t need much technique, and even a beginner like me could be effective.

I’ll call it the Yakuza Attack… just kidding.

Basically, I crept up cautiously until the very last moment, and when the goblin noticed me, I would grip my knife at hip height and charge, crashing into it with my whole body. Once it stabbed in, I never forgot to twist the knife. That would stir up its internal organs and ensure the wound spread. There was no doubt about it. After that, even if I left it alone for a bit, the goblin would eventually die. Still, since I wanted the drop items as soon as possible, I’d finish it off whenever I had the chance.

At this point, I feel more like an assassin than an explorer…

The first time I got a drop item, I had been happy. Even if it was just a “Goblin’s Loincloth”. The “Goblin’s Loincloth” was as it was. The fur cloth the goblins used to cover their crotches. Just from looking at it, it was clearly the fur of that rabbit I’d seen on this floor before. I had wondered whether something like this could even sell, but when I took it to the guild just in case, they bought it for 300 yen.  After risking my life for several days, I got 300 yen. I couldn’t stop myself from swaying with dizziness. So, only a select few explorers actually earn high income.

I keenly realized that fact on this day. And yet, I still went to the dungeon the next day, pulled a knife from a goblin, and brought it back. That knife alone went for 5,000 yen. It was hard for me to rewrite my common sense. Dungeons really had weird price standards.

From that day forward, I used the outdated smartphone my Tou-san had bought me to check the going rates for drop items. To be honest, market prices were practically non-existent. Depending on the site or company, the buying prices varied way too much.

To make things worse, as I kept researching, warnings like “beware of scams” kept popping up. It seemed like the only truly safe options were the guild and the guild auction. Both had the government backing them, so the listed prices looked cheaper than others, but supposedly, at least one wouldn’t get scammed.

It was a day that made me understand all too well the darkness of online auctions and the risks of personal transactions.
