A Promise

Stella left without giving her name. And now, the next scene with the feudal lord and the young noble was what one call a filler scene. Here, the young noble’s feelings were conveyed indirectly, like renewing his resolve to defeat the Demon King, or his heart leaning toward love. It served as a conversation to supplement the flow of the story so far.
Currently, on the stage, the lord role played by Brown and the young noblemen were having a discussion. Brown was wearing baggy, pompous clothes and sitting on a large chair.
“Indeed, I understand the situation. I thank you brave ones from the bottom of my heart, nyan.” (Brown)
“Ugo… We are most honored by your words.” (Wood)
“This town has been fighting the Demon King for a long time, nyan. Even now, we are gathering new troops. Soon, we will be ready to strike down the Demon King, nyan.” (Brown)
“What good timing this is. Might we join your forces as well?” (Lalatoma)
The magician proposed this to the young noble. In the deluxe version, there would even be a real night banquet following this scene.
“If someone of your caliber joins us, there is no greater reassurance, nyan. How about it? Would you take command as our general, nyan?” (Brown)
“Hahaha, you have a good eye! Truly worthy of my lord!” (Lalatoma)
“Ugo, general, huh…” (Wood)
Adventurers and the lord’s soldiers were different things. If he were to lead regular troops, he would have to give up on the lone wolf Stella.
I don’t even know her name. I have no idea where she is. I can’t rely on her.
Considering his future as a noble, it would be wiser to form an alliance with the lord here. This young noble was actually poor. He was skilled but had only two retainers.
If I don’t defeat the Demon King, I won’t live to see tomorrow…
And so, the young noble hesitated.
Should I choose the optimal path as a noble? Or should I bet everything on a meeting with an adventurer whose name I don’t even know?
“Ugo, such an honor beyond what I deserve…” (Young Noble)
Muttering uncertainly, the young noble spoke.
*Jajaaaan!!*
The sound of cymbals echoed, drowning out everything else.
“What is this, nyan!?” (Brown)
Brown shouted as a single messenger hurriedly ran onto the stage.
“Urgent report, nyan, Lord! The enemy, the enemy is here, nyan!” (Messenger)
“Nya-what!? They’ve made the first move, nyan!” (Brown)
“My lord, let us join the battle as well!” (Lalatoma)
“Oh yeah! Time to go wild!” (Hattori)
“Ugo, say no more! Let us hurry!” (Young Noble)
And so, the young nobles dashed off to defend the city.

The scene changed. It was finally time for the last battle. Traditionally, the monster that appeared here was always a dragon. So, something playing the role of the dragon appeared as the enemy, and here came an adventurer in his thirties wearing a dragon hat. For the record, this dragon was supposed to be one of the Demon King’s underlings. This wasn’t explained in the play, though.
Wait… wasn’t he part of the band earlier?
At some point, he had disappeared from the music ensemble.
Well, it isn’t uncommon to double as a backstage worker and minor actor… Maybe he just wanted to do both parts himself.
The adventurer in his thirties roared loudly.
“Gaaaooooo!” (Adventurer)
With a dragon hat, scale mail, and tiny wing accessories. No matter how you looked at it, he was a dragon.
Hmm… and of course, he has a bat.
When the dragon roared, the special effects Nyaff tribe began scurrying around. This time, they held signs painted with fire, representing the dragon’s breath attack.
“Evil dragon! We won’t let you have your way!” (Lalatoma)
The magician raised her bat vertically, swinging it down and this time, the special effects shifted to ice. An ice sign appeared on the stage.
A large number of Nyaff tribe members are working hard for this…!
“The ever-shifting sword will pass through fire!” (Hattori)
“Ugo, I will cut it down…!” (Young Noble)
The battle between the dragon and the young noble began. In this play, the fight with Marcosias was akin to an intricate dance. But this scene was all about flashy action. With all the special effects, intense music, and wild weapon swings left and right.
“Gao gaooo!” (Adventurer)
The adventurer let out beastly growls, sometimes grabbing signs and leaping, sometimes crawling along the ground. Dragons didn’t fight like humans. It was all about rampaging, expressing overwhelming savagery.
“Tch, stop flitting about!” (Hattori)
Hattori was fighting on his hands again.
Ah, isn’t this the part where he does the ball-balancing trick…?
“Ugh, I can’t keep up! Hey, make an ice foothold or something!” (Hattori)
“Got it! Aim for the wings!” (Lalatoma)
“Ugo, we bring him down first!” (Wood)
Then, a light-blue ball appeared on stage… It represented the ice foothold.
As soon as Hattori saw the ball, he jumped onto it while still upside-down.
“What the…!?” (Hold)
Hold let out a small cry. The audience was also thrilled by the acrobatic stunt.
““Oooooh!!”” (Spectator)
“Ever-shifting! Ever-shifting!” (Spectator)
““Ever-shifting!”” (Spectator)
Every time Hattori shouted and swung his sword, the audience echoed his chant.
Well, a spectacle like this is a rare treat. At exciting moments, the crowd is allowed to cheer, like a live concert.
“This way! Come over here!” (Hattori)
Hattori danced around the adventurer in his thirties, luring him in. Naturally, waiting in ambush was the young noble, bat at the ready.
“Toh… Ugo!” (Wood)
Using a stepping stool hidden behind a prop, Wood leapt forward. He swung his bat down in a grand overhead arc. Of course, they kept a safe distance.
“Gyaaao!” (Adventurer)
At the same moment the adventurer twisted his body, a Nyaff tribe member waiting nearby quickly removed the wing accessory from his back. Now, the dragon could no longer fly.
“Ugo… Hah… Hah… Just a little more…!” (Wood)
“As expected of our young master. He tore off the wings in a single strike!” (Lalatoma)
The audience roared in excitement. Glancing behind, everyone was cheering and clapping. The only calm ones were the Hold family and Nana. Hold and Yaya, noble as ever, were seated gracefully. But Audrey and Clarissa were leaning forward with interest.
Stella too, watched the stage with bated breath.
“That’s far enough!” (??)
A shrill, commanding voice. All music stopped at once. Marching onto the stage was… Marcosias.
“…Huh?” (Stella)
Stella muttered quietly.
Ah, right—she doesn’t know what happens next in the play.
In Marcosias’s arms was the limp form of Dia. In the current popular version of the play, this was the moment when Stella reappeared half-dead. Sometimes, she was already dead.
“Behold! One-on-one, she was no match for me. Soon, the rest of you shall meet the same fate!” (Marcosias)
Then, Marcosias gently laid Dia on the stage. Normally, she’d release her arm or throw her down, but… that was too dangerous. Understandably so.
If you look closely, Dia’s chest is rising and falling. You could tell she is only pretending to be dead.
“Ugo… Noooo!” (Wood)
Wood cried out in sorrow.
Oh, that one has real emotion behind it.
Next to him, Stella covered her mouth with her hands…
“I’m… dead…!?” (Stella)
She whispered so softly, only I could hear her.
Yeah… you’re dead. In the play, anyway…
“Ahhh. Stella-sama!” (Spectator)
“Damn you, Marcosias!” (Spectator)
Hmm, the audience in the back understood the story.
Well, it is famous. Naturally. It often appears in guidebooks too. This is a shocking scene where the person you fell in love with at first sight is suddenly found dead.
“Piyo…” (Dia)
“Heh, still breathing, huh? Any last words before you die?” (Marcosias)
Marcosias said smugly, full of confidence. She fit the role of villain perfectly.
“Ugo, out of the way!” (Wood)
Wood ran to Dia, swinging his bat.
Marcosias easily dodged and stepped back.
“Though she lost to me, her skills were decent. Fine. Say your goodbyes before she dies!” (Marcosias)
“Ugo… Ahh… No…” (Wood)
Soft music flowed in the background. It was the climax.
“Ugo, if that’s how it is…” (Wood)
“You mustn’t… not that…!” (Lalatoma)
Wood rummaged through his clothes and pulled out a small vial. It was sudden, but that was a resurrection potion. The audience stirred with excitement once more.
“We’ve been waiting!” (Spectator)
“Now that’s what I’m talking about!” (Spectator)
“…Huh?” (Stella)
Stella tilted her head, confused.
Sorry, Stella. That scene explaining it is cut! It’s just part of the promise!
