Chapter 8

(Thank you for reading at bayabuscotranslation.com)

The objective had been achieved, so I turned around to head back the way I came. And there it was. It was hiding in the silver grass, silently watching me with orange-tinged yellow eyes. Its distinct green skin and eerie eyes, and its height even shorter than mine, only 160 cm.

There was no mistake. It was a Goblin. It held a wooden stick in its hand and stared straight at me. Fortunately, maybe because of its poor eyesight, it hadn’t realized that I had noticed it.

There were theories that Goblins had good night vision, so maybe in this bright stratum, it was blinded by the light. That sort of thing hadn’t been clearly documented yet. So, on the internet, speculation mixed with information flew around wildly.

The distance between us wasn’t something I could cover in one leap. But clearly, we were both aware of each other. There was a sound, and I remembered that I was still holding the plastic bottle.

Should I throw this at it?

The thought came to me instinctively, but I rejected it.

Once the situation starts moving, it won’t stop.

So, I suppressed my body, which wanted to move in panic, and my thoughts, which were on the verge of spiraling into chaos, and forced myself to think about what to do next.

First, I had to switch from the plastic bottle to my weapon. I’d throw the plastic bottle at the Goblin, then pull out the knife jammed into my belt. I’d have to remove the cover too, but under normal circumstances, that would be the best course of action. But based on experience, I knew.

The plastic bottle might hit if I’m lucky, but the knife? I’ll definitely drop it. When I panic, I screw things up. That’s the kind of person I am. I’m confident in that! Not that I want that kind of confidence. So, before it move, I’d slowly draw the knife and remove the cover.

What about the plastic bottle? If I drop it, the thing might charge at me. I’ll just hold it between my right ring finger and pinky. All that is left is to fight. At this point, I have no choice but to do it!

Having made up my mind, I nervously reached for the knife at my waist, moving slowly and carefully. It was okay. The Goblin hadn’t moved. I reached with my left hand to slowly pull the knife from my waist belt. With my right hand, I grabbed the cover. All I had to do was pull it off.

The plastic bottle slipped from my fingers. It made that distinctive popping sound, which hard to describe, the kind only a liquid-filled plastic bottle could make. In response, the Goblin leapt out toward me.

I yanked the cover off in a fit of desperation.

At least it wasn’t the knife I dropped… but still, I dropped the plastic bottle! Damn it, I’m tearing up at how useless I am…

The fact that I was about to point a blade at a living creature made me hesitate for a moment. And in that brief instant, I got smacked with its wooden stick.

“Ow, dammit!… You bastard!” (Kouta)

Ignoring the next hit, I lunged at the Goblin and stabbed it with my knife.

“You bastard!… You bastard!… You…!” (Kouta)

As I kept stabbing over and over, the sensation in my hand started to make my skin crawl.

“Haa… haa… haa… haa… haaa… Is it over?” (Kouta)

Those were the words that spilled from my lips as I struggled to catch my breath.

It’s over. I killed it.

But the guilt didn’t well up inside me. That fact left me a little confused. I imagined it would be more emotionally painful. But maybe it was because when a monster is defeated, its body turned into a black mist and vanishes.

While I was stabbing the Goblin, its mouth had been oozing blood and saliva, and blood had gushed from its wounds. But the moment it died, all of it vanished completely without a trace.

Maybe that’s why all I’m left with is the gross sensation in my hands. I don’t want to believe it’s because my heart is broken.

“No drop, huh. Too bad.” (Kouta)

At times like this, the remaining item was called a drop or drop item.

Well, anyone who’s ever played a game would be familiar with the term.
