Chapter 5

After checking my status, I returned the monocle to the onee-san who had guided me and thanked her, then went to browse the shop.

All purchases in the shop were made using a license card. Deposits in Japanese yen were allowed, but withdrawals or conversions were not. This was a type of electronic money with such limitations. Therefore, the exchange rate was always fixed to Japanese yen. It was a reassuring system for Japanese people, since no one wanted to worry about volatile fluctuations like with crypto assets. Since the shop dealt in weapons, its sales system seemed to resemble how firearms were sold in America. That was what I read online.

If I were to compare it to something in Japan, maybe it was closer to a jewelry store.

Weapons and items were lined up neatly in showcases and on the walls. Staff stood firmly between the displays to prevent theft. The entrances and exits were also guarded by members of the Self-Defense Force, so much so that it seemed no one would even think of attacking this place.

Swords displayed on the walls and accessories inside the showcases had price tags ranging from tens of millions to even over a hundred million yen. Naturally, such items had nothing to do with me, but since I was here, I decided to take a look anyway.

I think I might’ve let out a weird sound, but please ignore that.

Finally, I found the item I was looking for. At a glance, no matter how you looked at it, it was just an ordinary knife. But for some reason, this Goblin Knife was said to cut remarkably well. The reason was still unknown, whether it was the material or something else entirely.

According to experts like swordsmiths, the craftsmanship itself was quite crude, which made it understandable why dungeon-sourced items would fetch high prices. This Goblin Knife I was currently looking at was the cheapest product sold in this shop. Even then, it wasn’t as though they just sold the item as-is from the dungeon.

Apparently, the knife retrieved from the dungeon had been sharpened, had a grip wrapped around the handle to make it easier to hold, and was sold with a cover, a sheath in name. The grip was said to reuse the kind of materials used for baseball bats or tennis rackets.

I also found that online.

“Yeah.” (Kouta)

This is hard to decide. Tennis grips are quite soft and easily fit the hand. Baseball grips are a bit on the firmer side, I think?

The effect confirmed through appraisal is written on the price card, ATK 7 for all of them, yet the one with a leather grip is outrageously expensive and out of the question, so it comes down to either of these two. This is something I’ll be entrusting my life to, so I can’t compromise… but in the end, I guess it comes down to preference and intuition.

I chose the knife with the slightly softer tennis grip. Just that alone cost 15,000 yen. I felt like crying. But according to a video by the streamer-type explorer Maru-san, the cutting performance was totally different from an ordinary knife.

If that’s the case, I’ll just have to accept it as a necessary expense.

After taking quite a while to examine them and finally choosing a knife, I looked up and saw a green poncho catch my eye. It was the type wore over the shoulders.

57,000 yen

With the funds I had saved up from switching my Tou-san’s promised latest-model smartphone gift to an older model for my school entrance celebration, plus all the pocket money I had saved little by little, I could afford it.

I could afford it, but… For someone like me, an ordinary person, it’s a painful decision. If I spend everything, I’ll have no allowance left. And this money is the result of me pleading with Tou-san to get extra support funds. I can’t afford to make a mistake here…

But then, I remembered my original goal.

I came here to change.

On the very first day, I spent all of my funds. There was no turning back now.
