Synopsis:

I don’t know since when I start thinking that way. However, I become intensely disgusted with being an ordinary person, with being ordinary. I come to feel a strong sense of loathing toward my plain self. Lacking individuality, blending into the people around me.

That is why I think I will try to change myself.  So then, I come to want to go to the dungeons that cause such a commotion in society in recent years.

Chapter 1

That day, as always, I was smacked awake by my alarm and changed into my school uniform with sleepy eyes. When I went downstairs from my room…

“Good morning, Kouta. If you don’t hurry, you’ll be late for school.” (Okaa-san)

“…Good morning. I know.” (Kouta)

As usual, I stuffed my stomach full of a breakfast consisting of fried eggs and miso soup before leaving the house.

“I’m off!” (Kouta)

Whether I poured soy sauce, sauce, or something else on my fried eggs varied, but for the most part, every day went like this.

By the way, I was on the soy sauce side. Whenever I mistakenly poured sauce on them, my mood dropped drastically from the morning.

I seriously think it’s the house’s fault for using the same containers for both soy sauce and sauce!

That day, I changed things up and tried eating with just salt and pepper. It was a bit bland, but not bad.

There are days like that too. After all… Once I got through that day, I would finally graduate from middle school!! I had already been accepted into high school, so once I graduated from middle school, I would be able to enter a dungeon!

Just thinking about it makes my heart dance.

It was said that dungeons first appeared five years ago, at exactly 12:00 a.m. on January 1st. On that exact day, monsters began overflowing one after another all over the world. Since then, every year at the same time and date, dungeons had been occurring in various locations around the globe.

At first, the world fell into panic. It was understandable. Unidentified creatures were pouring out of mysterious entrances. And it wasn’t as if those creatures were friendly, far from it. Every single one was hostile and aggressive.

On that day alone, over a thousand people died worldwide. The number of injured and seriously wounded exceeded tens of thousands. It was said that the first wave brought about ten dungeons, and that alone caused all that damage.

Each country immediately decided to exterminate these creatures as harmful beasts. Of course, everywhere also collected specimens for research purposes and brought them into research institutions. The truly terrible part was the secondary damage.

When the dungeons appeared, doomsday cultists finally revealed their true colors.

“If we’re going to die anyway, we might as well do whatever we want”, those kinds of people began to rampage freely.

It was the same kind of situation where robbers and thieves appeared in the aftermath of earthquakes and tsunamis. In fact, the same kind of things had happened even in Japan. That kind of chaos unfolded on a global scale, and the number of victims was said to be one hundred million, or even two hundred million, across the world.

Even now, though things had calmed down, those scars had not healed.

The United Nations decided to officially refer to these creatures as “Monsters”, and the holes or entrances as “Dungeons”.
