Think of It as a Preliminary Battle

“Cyan-sama! An unbelievable number of Anger Ants are swarming… They are attacking this base…!” (ally)

Upon receiving the report from a fellow cat-person ally, the composed face of the girl called Cyan twisted.

“Kuh, so it has come to this…!” (Cyan)

The base was built deep inside the dungeon. It was almost like a settlement, and it was a secret stronghold where beastkin belonging to the anti-government faction sharpened their fangs in preparation for the coming revolution. The government could not easily interfere, but there was always danger because it was inside the dungeon.

The greatest danger was the monsters. Since the dungeon’s deep parts were inhabited by powerful monsters, they had been attacked many times before and had fought them off. However, this time, the enemy was a terrifying swarm of ants. These insect monsters were called Anger Ants, and they always formed huge colonies. Each one was only about the size of a medium dog, and they were usually docile if left alone. But they had a troublesome trait that even the revolution-driven beastkin feared.

If even one ant in the colony was killed, they would relentlessly chase the killer with a massive swarm and always take revenge. They would bite mercilessly even if the opponent was a huge monster. They would use the poison stinger in their abdomen to immobilize the target and eventually devour the bones. Since they knew this nature, the beastkin had never provoked them before.

So, why were such a large swarm now approaching? It was purely due to unfortunate, uncontrollable circumstances. When they had killed another monster nearby, its huge body accidentally crushed a young Anger Ant. It was probably an individual that had wandered away from the colony. But this made no difference to the ants. As soon as it died, the body fluids spread around. If even a little of that fluid touched something, the ants would track it relentlessly. They would pursue their target even outside the dungeon.

“We will fight them here at this base! Think of this as a preliminary battle before defeating Bengar! Show them the results of our training!” (Cyan)

“Ooooh!” (Beastkin)

Cyan’s shout greatly inspired her fellow beastkin.

They had been fighting monsters in the dungeon every day to level up, using this base as their camp. There were no weak or incapable beastkin here. Everyone was a powerful warrior. No matter if the swarm numbered hundreds or thousands, they should be able to defeat them.

“Giiiiii giiiiii giiiiii giiiiii giiiiii giiiiii giiiiii giiiiii” (Anger Ants)

The Anger Ants made a distinctive sound with their strong jaws as the front of the swarm reached the beastkin’s base.

“Fire!” (Beastkin)

The beastkin fired arrows all at once at the ants climbing over the walls. The arrows pierced their hard heads, taking down ant after ant. But the ants were not deterred by the loss of their comrades. They grew even more furious and tried to break through the walls, using the dead ants as footholds.

“Hah!” (Cyan)

One ant finally reached the top of the wall, but it was kicked away with tremendous force by the girl Cyan.

“You crazy ants! Sacrificing so many just for one ant is totally pointless!” (Cyan)

She shouted in desperation, repeatedly kicking the ants climbing up. Other beastkin followed her lead without losing heart.

“Damn it… How many of them are there!?” (Beastkin)

“Th-the numbers are too many…!” (Beastkin)

But it was endless. The ant swarm, numbering not just thousands but tens of thousands, was wearing down the beastkin’s stamina. Moreover, the ants’ bodies formed makeshift siege towers, already approaching the wall’s height. Adding to that, strange sounds began to come from the bottom of the walls.

“Garigarigarigarigari…” (SFX)

“What is that sound!?” (beastkin)

“Could it be…?” (beastkin)

At that moment, a hole appeared in part of the wall. A black demon-like face appeared from it. A beastkin quickly kicked it to death, but another ant immediately appeared from the hole.

“They dug through the wall!?” (beastkin)

The walls were made from ore mined in the dungeon. But the ants’ powerful jaws had worn it down and finally pierced through. Of course, it did not stop at one place. New holes kept appearing, and the backup beastkin could no longer afford to rest.

“If this continues, the entire wall will be destroyed!” (Beastkin)

“If that happens, it will be the end…!” (Beastkin)

The beastkin screamed in despair. Cyan, who was still fighting on top of the wall, shouted to them.

“Don’t panic! Fill the holes with the bodies of the ants you kill! Use their hard exoskeletons against them!” (Cyan)

“Y-yes!” (beastkin)

At that moment…

“…What? The rear of the swarm is turning back…?” (Cyan)

The rear of the huge swarm suddenly changed direction and started moving the other way. Frowning, Cyan saw several figures standing where the ants were heading.

“Someone is fighting…?” (Cyan)
