Let’s Go Investigate

(Thank you for reading at bayabuscotranslation.com)

The next morning. I tried sleeping in a row with Wood and Stella. Surprisingly, I was able to get proper sleep. It really helped that Wood’s body physically blocks sight.

I woke up with a bit of movement and looked at the basket with Dia inside.

“Sleepy… chirp… sleepy… chirp…” (Dia)

She’s sleeping well. If it’s not just an optical illusion… yes, she has grown a little.

Originally, the growth rate of chicks is said to be fast. Apparently, their weight doubles in a week.

Wood does not move even a little while sleeping. He starts moving when sunlight comes out fairly. Since he is made of wood, his sleep might be different from ours.

“Uhn… ah, good morning…” (Stella)

Stella woke up. She rubbed her eyes and leaned forward to check on Dia.

In a low voice, Stella shared her impression.

“She has grown a little, hasn’t she?” (Stella)

“Yes, her growth is fast.” (Elt)

It looked that way to Stella too. Then, Dia suddenly sat up.

“Chirp! Good morning!” (Dia)

“Ah, good morning.” (Elt)

“Good morning…!” (Stella)

“Ugo!? Good morning!” (Wood)

Wood woke up too. Or rather, it looked like Dia woke him. Dia spread her wings energetically from the morning.

“Tou-sama, Kaa-sama, onii-chan… pet me!” (Dia)

And so, our new day began. After a light freshening up, I went down to the living room. While Wood was making breakfast, Stella and I gave Dia a bath. Though it was just filling a tub with some lukewarm water.

They say cockatrices like bathing, but I wonder if it’s true.

“Chirp, ah… this feels nice!” (Dia)

Dia splashed around.

…So cute.

“Is it too hot?” (Elt)

“Chirp! It’s okay!” (Dia)

“Let’s clean the underside of your wings too…” (Stella)

Stella tickled and cleaned Dia’s feathers carefully.

“Then, I’ll do the back.” (Elt)

Tickle, tickle.

Soft and smooth.

Though the fluffy feathers got wet, the texture did not become unpleasant at all. It felt like touching fine silk.

“Piyo! Am I clean now?” (Dia)

“Yes, perfectly clean.” (Stella)

“Here too.” (Elt)

“Tou-sama, Kaa-sama, thank you, piyo!” (Dia)

It seems Dia likes bathing too. Maybe it’s because of memories from my previous life, but I feel like I would die if I don’t take a bath…

Hmm, if she grows at this speed, my fingers won’t keep up. We need a comb… I should buy various things from Naru.

After eating breakfast with salad and seasonal fruit, I decided to write a letter to the Adventurer Guild.

The matter was about the Cockatrice Queen.

I had hesitated a bit to write it, but it’s too late now. The hatching plan is already known throughout the village, and if she grows bigger, it will be impossible to hide her physically. Well, it is related to the Zanzas labyrinth too. She is basically part of our family now.

I wrote in the letter that report and one more thing. A request for information gathering. The adventurers in the village did not know about the Cockatrice Queen. Dia was a very rare existence.

It would be fine to think about her based on cockatrices, but I wanted more information. That meant the appropriate place was the Zanzas Adventurer Guild after all. So, I wrote that request.

Now, I wonder if we can find out something via the Adventurer Guild…

After that, I went to the Large Tree Tower. It was the regular meeting. The main agenda was to check the production plan. The numbers that Anaria and Naru got from Tetetoka were summarized on paper. Of course, the sales of produced goods were also summarized.

Hmm, it seems to be going mostly smoothly.

Anaria read out the papers.

“Um… so, production and sales are going well…” (Anaria)

“…It seems that increasing production any further is impossible.” (Naru)

“Yes, we cannot increase the amount of medicinal herbs used in various productions any further. The purchases from Zanzas are also nearing their limit.” (Anaria)

“The production in the Healberry Village is special, nya.” (Naru)

That is exactly right. The consumption of medicinal herbs is high, for things like grass dumplings, fertilizers, potions, and treats for the Dryads. Even if the demand for medicinal herbs rises, the supply does not increase easily. Most of the necessary medicinal herbs cannot be cultivated and must be gathered.

Of course, I can produce medicinal herbs using my plant magic, but I cannot prepare large amounts of herbs that contain mana. Or rather, that does not fundamentally solve the problem…

“How about the depths of the forest where we lived?” (Tetetoka)

Tetetoka said this from among the potted plants.

Tetetoka always takes this style during meetings. There is no helping it. The morale of the Dryads is more important than the small customs of human society.

“That place, huh… The adventurers have not gone deeper than the old Dryads’ dwelling.” (Elt)

“Yes, gathering is only done up to that point.” (Tetetoka)

“Nnya… Is there a lot of medicinal herbs beyond there, nya?” (Naru)

“There are, yes. But even we only go as far as we can make a day trip from there.” (Tetetoka)

“Hmm…” (Elt)

Adventurers skilled at gathering dislike risk. Gathering is their daily life, so injury is out of the question. That is why they only go as far as the old Dryads’ house they have already entered.  They probably do not go deeper. Currently, gathering is going fine.

“All right. Let’s form an exploration team and go deeper into the forest. We will also build several resting places and expand the range of the adventurers’ gathering activities.” (Elt)

“That will be quite a large operation…” (Anaria)

“I’ll just use [Large Tree House] in the forest. It means we can build houses quickly even in the forest.” (Elt)

“Oh! That’s right! How wonderful…!” (Anaria)

“Nnya, it is a method only Elt-sama could come up with.” (Naru)

“However, unlike this village, we need to be careful of ground conditions. Also, if we build [Large Tree Houses] in strange places, it could destroy the ecosystem…” (Elt)

[Large Tree House] is quite heavy. If the ground is weak, it will collapse. This village’s ground has been checked and is safe, but for new constructions, there are people who will check the ground. Also, [Large Tree House] pushes aside the existing ecosystem. If built thoughtlessly and everywhere, it will have a bad effect.

“Let’s include people strong in those matters in the exploration team. We will begin promptly.” (Elt)

“Leave the materials to me, nya. I can prepare them quickly, nya.” (Naru)

“Ah, thank you. Once preparations are complete, we will depart.” (Elt)

Well then, is this the end of the discussion? I wonder how Dia is… Is she taking a nap?

While thinking about that, Anaria and Naru looked over here.

I wonder if something is wrong?

“Is there something else?” (Elt)

“Ah, no…! I just thought Dia was cute…” (Anaria)

“She had noble feathers, nya.” (Naru)

“I see, I feel that way too.” (Elt)

“Yes, it’s been a day, but how is she?” (Anaria)

“She has grown a little. She also seems to like bathing. It was this morning…” (Elt)

After that, we got excited talking about Dia for a while.

Hmm, maybe I am quite a doting parent. But it does not feel bad at all.

Meanwhile, a big commotion was happening at the Zanzas’ Adventurer Guild. The cause was the letter Elt sent. The Cockatrice Queen. Even the upper ranks of the Adventurer Guild regarded her as a legendary existence. And now, she had been born.

In response to this situation, Guild Master Leia of the Adventurer Guild quickly made a decision. She said the matter must be investigated promptly. The fluffiness. The growth speed. Also, if she felt like it, the threat level or something like that. Leia, who held a first-class Cockatrice certification and was known as Doctor Piyo, summoned trusted adventurers.

An A-rank adventurer, the witch of the Hundred Islands, one who was loved by the water god—

“…An S-rank urgent quest, huh. Gulp…” (Jessica)

Jessica, the light blue magician who was with Stella in the Zanzas labyrinth, was about to begin the second act of her Cockatrice encounter.
