Chapter 3, “Fluffy Territory Development,” begins!

My words didn’t seem to click with Stella. No wonder, since it looked and felt like a stone. But what Stella didn’t understand seemed to be a little different.

“Cockatrice Queen… is it? Is that a close relative of the cockatrice?” (Stella)

“Hmm… you start from there.” (Elt)

In the game, the Cockatrice Queen was the leader of the cockatrice flock. Its appearance was not very different from a cockatrice, fluffy and soft. However, it was much larger… about five meters at most. It was about the size of a small dragon. Furthermore, its intelligence was quite high. It efficiently controlled the flock and gave buffs to the surrounding cockatrices.

It was very rare in terms of numbers. There might be no sightings in other dungeons either.

“That’s right… The Cockatrice Queen is the individual that can be the boss of the flock. It is bigger than a normal cockatrice.” (Elt

“Ugo ugo! Very big!” (Wood)

“Fuuu… It grows even bigger than that…? Gulp.” (Stella)

“Yes, but it’s basically a gentle monster.” (Elt)

“Ugo ugo! Birds are also friendly!” (Wood)

Cockatrices were tameable monsters and quite popular. They were cute and fluffy monsters after all. In this world, cockatrice feathers were very popular. They were used for pillows, futons, and stuffed toys. People couldn’t help but seek fluffiness.

“If you know that much, do you also know how to hatch it?” (Stella)

“Yes, I have knowledge, but I have never actually done it… Hm?” (Elt)

“Please! Let’s do it!” (Stella)

Stella suddenly leaned forward.

Oh, she’s really motivated. Her eyes are sparkling. Naturally… from what I heard, she really loved cockatrices. By the way, the raising of monsters is left to each lord, so I could decide freely. Powerful lords raise many kinds of monsters. There are various reasons, economic, military, and status-related.

Hmm, having cockatrices would definitely be a plus for the territory. So, I have no objection to hatching them…

I shook my head.

“It won’t be possible right away. You need the [Cockatrice Tamer] skill to hatch a queen’s egg. We have to find someone who has that skill first…” (Elt)

“Oh, I learned it on the way back from the first floor!” (Stella)

“…What?” (Elt)

The conditions to acquire the taming skill are quite troublesome. You had to keep feeding the tameable monster. When the number of times feeding reaches a certain point, you’ll get the skill. In the game, there are events where you feed many at once, so it is somewhat easier.

“You fed a cockatrice ten thousand times…?” (Elt)

“Fuueh… I’m surprised myself…” (Stella)

After hearing enough, I decided to gather people and equipment for the Cockatrice Queen hatching.

The place was Anaria’s workshop. The two who came were Anaria and Naru. After explaining the outline, both of them got quite enthusiastic.

“So, the mission is to hatch the Cockatrice Queen’s egg. We must succeed.” (Elt)

“Yes, nya! We’ll do our best, nya!” (Naru)

“Yes, let’s definitely accomplish it!” (Anaria)

…They’re more fired up than I expected. It’s certainly a rare monster, but the Cockatrice Queen itself shouldn’t be well known. After all, Stella didn’t know it. Well, Stella was sealed for several hundred years, so her knowledge might have gaps. Hmm… just to be sure, I’ll check.

“I want to ask one thing. You’re not against raising monsters, right?” (Elt)

“Of course not, nya. Raising monsters in the territory is a status, nya… You need magic or skills to do it, nya.” (Naru)

“I’ve never heard of the name Cockatrice Queen before, but it’s a close relative of the cockatrice, right? The mascot of Zanzas is the cockatrice!” (Anaria)

“Is that so?” (Elt)

“Yes, that adorable appearance… souvenir shops have many cockatrice stuffed toys. I have a few at home too…” (Anaria)

“Cute monsters are popular, nya.” (Naru)

“Stella didn’t mention it, but I guess she didn’t see any when she went there.” (Elt)

“I think that’s right. If you go to furniture or souvenir shops, they definitely have them.” (Naru)

Also, Naru’s trade range was mainly potions. Maybe that’s why it didn’t come up much.

“Cockatrice feathers are valuable, nya. If we can trade them, it will be profitable, nya.” (Naru)

“…There are even adventurers who specialize in collecting shed feathers.” (Elt)

Apparently, there were over a hundred adventurers gathering cockatrice feathers. That showed how popular cockatrice feathers were. Both Naru and Anaria knew that, so they were motivated. Also, raising monsters was a status symbol. That made sense. We were stuck without Stella having the [Cockatrice Tamer] skill.

“All right… I’ll tell you what we need.” (Elt)

We should need the same things as in the game. A solution mixing multiple herbs, and lots of cockatrice feathers. Anaria will make the solution, and Naru will buy the feathers.

I was getting excited.

If things go well, the Cockatrice Queen’s egg should hatch by the end of this week.

After leaving Anaria’s workshop, I headed next to the Large Tree Tower. The preparations for hatching should be mostly complete by now.

The solution, feathers, skill, and mana. These were the things needed for hatching. I could say we had a plan in place. I could supply the last part, the mana, myself. However, it was still not perfect. We needed to prepare the environment for raising it.

“So, I’d like your cooperation…” (Elt)

“Sure thing!” (Tetetoka)

Tetetoka, who I visited, agreed without hesitation. By the way, Tetetoka was currently buried in a flowerpot. I didn’t mention that.

“We need a large amount of vegetables. Cockatrices are herbivores and eat a lot… Also, I heard from Stella that they seem to like grass dumplings as well.” (Elt)

“Ohh… that sounds like we get along well.” (Tetetoka)

Well… I don’t think many people dislike grass dumplings. I have come to quite like it after eating it a lot. There is no sweetness in this world, after all…

“So, I want to hold another workshop or rather a teaching session about grass dumplings. This time, it will be for adventurers.” (Elt)

“Sounds good!” (Tetetoka)

That was a cheerful reply. Next to the flowerpot where Tetetoka was, there was a watering can.

“Thanks, that helps a lot.” (Elt)

I took the watering can and poured water on Tetetoka.

Pouring water over her head while thanking her was pretty psychopathic. But from a Dryad’s perspective, this was a genuine gesture of gratitude. I’d give plenty of water.

“Ahhh… feels good~” (Tetetoka)

While watering Tetetoka, I was thinking about future plans. I wanted both an indoor space to avoid rain and an outdoor space to walk around. Yeah, I should create some buildings that fit using plant magic. Recently, I had started to think about other things even while pouring water. This was what you called getting used to it.

“Ahhh… heaven…” (Tetetoka)

At first, I even resisted pouring water over her head. Maybe it is a bit different, but could this also be called adaptation? Or rather, maybe I am becoming influenced by Dryad thinking.

And at that moment, I did not yet know. I was the first. The first person in the country to raise cockatrices and build a ranch…
