Grass Dumplings that You Want to Eat Immediately

(Thank you for reading at bayabuscotranslation.com)

Several dozen people gathered at the Large Tree Tower, and a sweets-making party began. The Large Tree Tower was quite big, and maybe because most were short Nyaff tribe members and Dryads, it didn’t feel very cramped. That said, more than half were making grass dumplings. After all, the Dryads only made grass dumplings. I was also in the grass dumplings group.

…Hmm.

When short Nyaff tribe members and Dryads gathered around waist height, it felt like an elementary school play. It was heartwarming and soothing. Anaria was also in the grass dumplings group. She was stretching and looked very motivated.

“Looks like you’re fired up… I should loosen up my body too.” (Elt)

“You actually use your arm strength quite a bit when kneading.” (Anaria)

“That’s true, it seems like we’ll be making a lot today.” (Elt)

After that, we talked while making kusa-dango.

*Knead, knead. Knead, knead, knead.*

Next to me, Brown was desperately kneading.

“Kneading nya… hmm hmm, kneading nya…” (Brown)

“You’re enjoying it, huh.” (Elt)

“Yes, nya! Kneading really is nice, nyan. Making it round…” (Brown)

When he said that, Brown looked enchanted. Being small and round probably strikes a chord with the Nyaff tribe.

“When you make a good one, you can eat it. The Dryads do that…” (Elt)

“Nnyaan, it does look delicious fresh-made, nya…” (Brown)

Tetetoka was across from me. She was also kneading.

“That’s right. It’s good to eat them right after making. Munch munch.” (Tetetoka)

Watching her, Tetetoka was eating grass dumplings as soon as she made them.

…Huh? Am I seeing things? Not a single finished grass dumplings is visible.

“You’re making and eating all of them…” (Elt)

“It’s breakfast replacement. Munch munch.” (Tetetoka)

“As expected of a Dryad. Very free-spirited.” (Elt)

“The premise of this sweets-making gathering seems shaky, nya.” (Brown)

“Munch munch, gulp. Eh…? Isn’t it okay to eat while making…?” (Tetetoka)

“Ah, yes… You can eat while making. Yeah, I’ll leave that to you all.” (Elt)

“Great! For now, I’ll keep making and eating until I’m a little full. Munch munch.” (Tetetoka)

Hmm, fresh-made… In Japan, dumplings and mochi are often said to be delicious fresh-made, but I don’t think the makers usually eat them while making. Certainly, if it weren’t for the Dryads, no one would eat as they make.

…It does look delicious. Rather, it’s a recommended way to eat by the veteran grass dumplings artisans, the Dryads. Maybe I should try it… Yes, I’ll try eating one. Just one.

“Munch munch…” (Elt)

“Ah, Elt-sama…?” (Brown)

It is delicious. Maybe because it is just kneaded. It is fluffy and soft, or rather not fully solidified. I feel like I can eat endlessly.

“…This is good as it is. Everyone should try it.” (Elt)

“Th-that’s so tempting, nya. You’re eating it fresh-made?” (Brown)

“Is that okay…? But grass dumplings don’t seem to make you fat.” (Tetetoka)

“The taste changes with time. Well… over there they’re making baked sweets, so filling up might be bad. But if you eat, you can just make more.” (Elt)

At my words, everyone except the Dryads started nibbling grass dumplings.

Sometimes, something like this is nice. …Come to think of it, Stella liked grass dumplings. Maybe I’ll secretly make some for her when she returns. She’ll surely be happy. Also, she doesn’t know I have skills yet… I hope she’ll be happy if I can make it as well as the Dryads.

Meanwhile, in Zanzas’ dungeon, The Dead Bird’s Grassland.

If you walk the shortest path on the first floor, you can reach the second floor in a few hours. In the middle of this shortest path, a river flows, and it serves as a resting spot.

Stella’s party set up camp beside the river and took a break. The river was several hundred meters wide but had no fish and was as clear as glass. Its depth was a little above the ankles. The beautiful riverbed was clearly reflected. The current was gentle, perfect for resting.

“Phew… this is soothing.” (Stella)

Stella loved this river. She had traveled many places, but had never seen water this clear. In fact, there were tours just to see this river. Wood scooped up water and splashed it on himself.

“Ugo ugo, very clean! Feels good!” (Wood)

“This is the last place with water. Please refresh yourself.” (Stella)

“Ugo ugo! Got it!” (Wood)

In contrast to Wood enjoying himself, the elite adventurers looked pale. It was as if they were facing the end of the world.

“…Everyone, you look very pale. Are you okay?” (Stella)

“We’re not okay… Ugh, how can you be so calm? There are so many cockatrices over there, right?” (Elite adventurer)

The magician in light blue clothes pointed downstream several hundred meters away. There, many cockatrices were bathing in the river.

“Piyo piyo—” (Cockatrices)

“Pipiyo piyo—” (Cockatrices)

“They’re nice. So many and so cute.” (Stella)

““Eeeek!”” (Elite adventurers)

The elite adventurers recoiled in unison.

“I don’t know how many there are, but with that many, even a whole knight squad couldn’t handle them!” (Elite adventurer)

“There are only sixteen…” (Stella)

“Sixteen!? If that many A-rank monsters came to our branch… it’s evacuation level for the whole town!” (Elite adventurer)

“But the cockatrices here aren’t dangerous…” (Stella)

“I know that but… huff, huff…” (Elite adventurer)

Though there were hundreds of cockatrices in The Dead Bird’s Grassland…

Stella thought that but did not say it aloud.

“Ugh, I understand why this place is called one of the world’s top ten dungeons… Knowing this, I feel like I might go crazy.” (Elite adventurer)

“Piyo?” (Cockatrice chick)

At that moment, a cockatrice about the height of a person parted the grass. It was a baby cockatrice.

“Piyo piyo?” (Baby cockatrice)

“U-uhhh… Get ready for battle!” (Elite adventurer)

As the elite adventurers reached for their weapons, Stella leaned forward and stopped them.

“Hey, hey… Don’t move!” (Stella)

At Stella’s sharp command, the elite adventurers froze. They obeyed quickly, showing their veteran experience.

“…Don’t provoke it. If this cockatrice gets noisy, others will come.” (Stella)

““…gulp”” (Elite adventurers)

“This one is still a child and won’t hug. Only adult cockatrices hug.” (Stella)

“But they’re B-rank monsters…” (Elite adventurer)

“Don’t worry, leave it to me.” (Stella)

Stella calmly took grass dumplings out of her bag. It was food brought from Healberry Village as portable food. The cockatrice jumped up when it saw the grass dumplings.

“Piyo… piyo!” (Baby cockatrice)

“It seems interested in this grass dumplings made only from plants.” (Stella)

“Piyo piyo…!” (Baby cockatrice)

“We’re sorry for entering your territory. We’ll leave soon…” (Stella)

The cockatrice took the grass dumplings from Stella’s hand and swallowed it whole.

“Piyo… piyo piyo!!” (Baby cockatrice)

Then, it rubbed its body against Stella.

“There, there…! So soft…” (Stella)

“Piyo!” (Baby cockatrice)

After being thoroughly fluffed up, the cockatrice fluttered its wings and returned to the grass.

“Well then, that’s a good way to do it…” (Stella)

“S-scary. In a normal dungeon, you wouldn’t casually encounter B-rank monsters like this!” (Elite adventurer)

“Fluffy and soft though…” (Stella)

However, Stella felt something was a little strange.

Normally, even if you feed them, they wouldn’t flap their wings and leave like that. It was the first time the cockatrices ate Dryads’ grass dumplings. The reaction and the way they left were new.

(It must mean they really liked that grass dumplings…) (Stella)

*Munch munch*

Eating grass dumplings herself, Stella thought such thoughts.

Stella did not realize that this was the moment the cockatrice ranch in Healberry Village would later be born…
