I’ll Let You Off For Today

“H-Hey hey hey, wait just a minute!? How did you absorb my mana just now!?” (Amaimon)
“How, you ask? It’s a magic that absorbs mana called Magic Drain.” (Leon)
“That’s impossible, isn’t it!? A mere human absorbing that kind of mana in an instant!?” (Amaimon)
Amaimon shouted as if in disbelief, spitting as he did. Magic Drain was, just as Leon said, a spell that absorbs mana, but the amount that could be absorbed at once was limited. Also, since the amount of mana a living being could hold had a cap, if one absorbed more than that limit, the body could not withstand it and might explode from within. It was like forcing a huge amount of water into your mouth without stopping, which would rupture your stomach.
Even so, for Leon, who had already mastered two Class III jobs that greatly increased mana capacity, namely [Grand Wizard] and [Saint], absorbing this much mana at once was nothing difficult.
“Damn it! But don’t think you’ve won with just that! That was only child’s play.” (Amaimon)
“Then, I’ll go next.” (Leon)
“Wha—!?” (Amaimon)
Leon created a foothold with earth magic, then kicked off it and instantly closed the distance to the Demon boy. He swung his sword, which had been reforged by Zeta using adamantite.
“Gyaaah!?” (Amaimon)
Amaimon tried to dodge by leaping backward in haste, but he did not make it in time, and Leon’s blade cut deep into his chest.
“N-No way!? T-To think that someone like me could be wounded by a mere human…!?” (Amaimon)
Despite the depth of the wound, Amaimon did not appear to be in much pain. Rather than suffering, he stared wide-eyed in shock.
“Impossible! My body isn’t supposed to be injured, not even by a Grand Dragon’s claws! Besides, you’re supposed to be a mage, aren’t y—hii!?” (Amaimon)
Leon ignored the nonsense the Demon was shouting and moved in to strike again. However, the follow-up attack narrowly missed. Amaimon flapped the wings on his back and soared upward, rapidly gaining altitude.
“You’ve got to be kidding! There’s no way I’m sticking around to fight that kind of human!” (Amaimon)
Leon could also fly using magic, but he still could not match a Demon who had wings by nature. Amaimon confirmed that he had put some distance between them and then shouted down:
“T-This time, I’ll let you off! But don’t you forget this! No matter what I have to do, I’ll get my hands on that one day!” (Amaimon)
Leaving behind a line fit for a petty villain, he vanished from sight. It seemed he realized he could not win against Leon and fled. It was a wise decision, despite his excessive pride.
“…What did he mean by ‘that’, anyway?” (Leon)
Meanwhile, Leon was left with that question. He could guess that ‘that’ must be the reason the Demons had attacked the city, but he had no clue what it actually referred to. Since thinking about it would not bring an answer, he decided to return to the surface for now.
“He drove away that Demon…” (Knight)
“No way…” (Knight)
Naturally, the knights all turned toward him with expressions of shock and disbelief. The Demons that had been summoned again had disappeared somewhere along with Amaimon’s retreat.
(Ah, this is going to be a pain again…) (Leon)
Leon sighed internally, already dreading what came next, when Saintess Marie rushed up to him with a furious expression.
“Hey!” (Marie)
“Oh, it’s the Saintess-oneechan. What’s wrong?” (Leon)
“Don’t ‘what’s wrong’ me! That Demon!” (Marie)
“He kind of just went home.” (Leon)
“He went home, you say…” (Marie)
Saintess Marie exhaled in exasperation at Leon’s offhanded response.
“There’s a lot I want to ask you, but… anyway, we’re safe thanks to you. Thank you.” (Marie)
“Hmm, I didn’t really do anything special though?” (Leon)
“You don’t have to pretend. You’re the one who healed the wounded, right?” (Marie)
“That wasn’t me.” (Leon)
This, at least, was true. It was the ghost who had followed Leon around on its own who had done that.
“Thanks to that, even after all that fighting, there were zero fatalities. Some knights should have already been dead, too…” (Marie)
Apparently, that ghost was able to use resurrection magic. She might think that if it could do that, it should just resurrect itself, but resurrection magic required not only the soul. It could not be performed unless the body remained.
(Wait… where did it go?) (Leon)
But the ghost was nowhere to be seen.
(Maybe it passed on peacefully? If so, that’s fine… but just who was that thing, really…?) (Leon)
As Leon was pondering this, the third barrier, which had been destroyed earlier and had protected the shrine district, suddenly came back up.
“The barrier…” (Leon)
“It’s been restored…?” (Marie)
What was more, it had almost the same strength as the one Leon had previously set. It had drawn fully upon the ley lines, and setting a barrier like that would have required considerable skill.
“It worked out just fine!” (Ghost)
Then, from the direction of the third barrier, the ghost came flying toward them, looking pleased.
“Huh? You did that?” (Leon)
“Yes, I did! I thought maybe I could do it, so I gave it a try, and it actually worked!” (Ghost)
Between the resurrection magic and this, the ghost’s abilities were on par with those of a [Saint]. Leon reconsidered his evaluation, thinking that this ghost might have been a rather renowned figure in life.
