Fishing
(Thank you for reading at bayabuscotranslation.com)
The next day. The territory had another holiday today. It was a two-day weekend system.
Well then, Stella and the others were scheduled to arrive at Zanzas before noon. Somehow, I feel restless. Even though I believe everything will be fine, I can’t help but feel uneasy. I could just laze around at home, but… It seems better to do something to distract myself.
In that case, shall I go fishing for the first time in a while? There happened to be a small lake to the east of the territory. There should have been some fish there as well. Fishing rods can be made with plant magic, and small items like lures can also be made with magic.
If I buy some line, I could complete a fine set of fishing gear. Recently, I have been able to make not only big things but also familiar small items. Fortunately, the humidity is high, but the sky is clear. There is no wind, and it does not seem like rain will fall. It is just right for walking. Yes, I’ve decided. Let’s go fishing.
“All right, let’s go fishing today… Wood, what do you want to do?” (Elt)
“Ugo ugo! If we go to the river, I want to go together. I want to bathe in water!” (Wood)
“Yeah, that sounds good. Then, let’s go together.” (Elt)

Meanwhile, Stella and the others had arrived at Zanzas. The labyrinth city of Zanzas has one of the world’s top ten labyrinths, and the city is built around it. The road leading to the city entrance was crowded with many horse-drawn carriages and travelers. Seeing the lively scene, Stella let out a sigh of admiration.
“Haah… It really has become very splendid.” (Stella)
“By the way, Stella, this is your first time in current Zanzas, nya. It’s always bustling with merchants and travelers whenever you come here, nya.” (Naru)
“That is because many gather here aiming for materials produced from the labyrinth. Also, minerals can be mined underground aside from the labyrinth.” (Anaria)
The carriage approached the city gate. There stood a particularly large statue. It was a proud-standing elf girl statue. Itt was, again, a statue of Stella. There was a plaque attached beneath the statue.
“Hero of Zanzas, statue of Stella.”
“That statue is still here.” (Stella)
Feeling a sense of nostalgia, Stella said.
Naru and Anaria were startled. Stella’s mood had changed since a while ago, but her words now carried a sense of dignity. She straightened her back and spoke in a firm voice. She truly was an S-rank adventurer. Though they never doubted it before, this was the first time the two of them truly felt it.
“The Adventurer Guild is near the city entrance, right?” (Stella)
“Y-yes, nya. We will arrive soon, nya.” (Naru)
Naru and Anaria started whispering to each other.
“…Amazing, nya. The moment she saw that statue, it was like a switch flipped, and she became a different person, nya.” (Naru)
“That statue has been there since Zanzas was established. It’s the oldest Stella statue in Zanzas.” (Anaria)
“Surely she has her reasons for that, nya…” (Naru)
Stella quietly gazed at the cityscape of Zanzas from the small window of the carriage. Naru and Anaria felt reassured by her back. Stella had truly become like an adventurer.
“This is going well, isn’t it…” (Anaria)
“Y-yeah, it will be fine, nya.” (Naru)

After walking about 30 minutes from home, I arrived at the lake. The lake was surrounded by gently rising hills, and maple leaves floated on its surface. It was not raining, and the water volume was sufficient. While attaching a lure made with magic to the fishing rod, I tilted my head in puzzlement. By the way, Wood was dipping his feet into the lake, dozing off.
“I wonder how things ended up like this…” (Elt)
“Nyan, this is also thanks to Elt-sama’s virtue, nyan.” (Brown)
Next to me, Brown was attaching shrimp-like bait to his small fishing rod. He was not the only one at the lake. In fact, twenty adventurers and apothecaries had come along. I was found by Brown just after leaving home, but somehow the number had swollen to this many.
It seems people thought this lake must have a lot of fish. The story was that the Lord-sama had definitely gone fishing and caught something. If you go together, you would surely catch fish!
That was the explanation.
…Well, I just wanted a change of pace. Still, since everyone wanted to fish, I couldn’t stop them.
Right now, everyone was preparing with fishing rods bought from the Nyaff tribe.
They all looked surprisingly serious.
“This is like a fishing tournament…” (Elt)
“Nya? What kind of thing is that, nya? How can fishing become a tournament, nya?” (Brown)
“We don’t have anything like that around here. The rules are simple. The person who catches the biggest fish within the time limit wins. That’s all.” (Elt)
“That sounds fun, nyan! I want to try it, nyan.” (Brown)
“Ah, that’s fine, of course.” (Elt)
And so, a fishing tournament suddenly began.
Well… it is recreation. A way to relax on a holiday.
“Wow, everyone is really serious.” (Tetetoka)
Tetetoka spoke to me.
She wasn’t holding a fishing rod and seemed to have come along without us noticing.
“Tetetoka, aren’t you going to fish?” (Elt)
“Fishing? Hmm… I don’t really understand it. I’ve never done it.” (Tetetoka)
“If you want to try, I can make you a fishing rod here and give it to you…” (Elt)
“Thank you! I want to try!” (Tetetoka)
“All right, since it’s a special occasion.” (Elt)
I made a small stick with magic and handed it to Tetetoka.Brown brought some fishing line, so attaching it made a complete fishing rod. Tetetoka looked at the fishing rod with shining eyes.
“Yay, I’ll take good care of it! Ah, but there’s nothing at the tip of the rod…?” (Tetetoka)
“Ah, you need to put something that fish will bite on the tip… I wonder if a carved wooden fish would work.” (Elt)
“I have small shrimp bait, nya. Want to use it, nya?” (Brown)
“I haven’t fished much here, so I don’t know what they like to bite.” (Elt)
“Oh, then I have this!” (Tetetoka)
She said so and took out a black, rolled-up dumpling-like thing from her bag.
“It’s a special herbal dumpling made by the Dryads, which I brought as a snack. I’ll try using it.” (Tetetoka)
“That sounds interesting. You should definitely try it.” (Elt)
Maybe it would make the fish bite nonstop.
“All right, then I’ll use this.” (Tetetoka)
Tetetoka attached the herbal dumpling to the line’s tip and started fishing. She handled the rod quite skillfully, putting her weight into it.
*Splash splash!*
…Apparently, the herbal dumpling was popular with the fish too. It seemed Dryads were really strong with natural stuff. In no time, fish started gathering at the tip of Tetetoka’s line. This was definitely Tetetoka’s victory.
“Whoa!? That’s an amazing bite!” (Tetetoka)
