At Least It’s Not Food

(Thank you for reading at bayabuscotranslation.com)

Leon and the others arrived at the lakeshore and proceeded along the lake until they reached the nearest town. The sun was already beginning to set, so they started looking for an inn. The royal capital of the Holy Kingdom had the largest church in the world, attracting many pilgrims from all over. For this reason, the town was lined with numerous inns.

However…

“Sorry, boys. We’re all full.” (Innkeeper)

“Sorry, but no rooms are available right now.” (Innkeeper)

“We apologize. Every room is occupied.” (Innkeeper)

No matter which inn they visited, all were full, and it was difficult to find a room. Concerned, Leon asked one of the inn’s proprietresses.

“Hey, Obachan, why is everywhere full?” (Leon)

“Oh, don’t you know? The regular ferry to the royal capital is currently not operating.” (Innkeeper)

“Not operating?” (Leon)

A regular ferry operated to the royal capital in the middle of the lake, used by travelers and pilgrims. However, due to certain circumstances, the ferry service had stopped for now.

“That’s why every inn is crowded with pilgrims who cannot cross to the capital.” (Innkeeper)

“I see.” (Leon)

It seemed they had arrived at a bad time.

“Is there any inn that might have space?” (Leon)

“Well… ah, there is that one…” (Innkeeper)

The proprietress seemed to recall something. However, her expression was uneasy, and…

“You might want to avoid it. There are some unpleasant rumors about it… that’s probably why it might have vacancies,” (Innkeeper)

“Unpleasant rumors?” (Leon)

Leon wondered if it was because the rooms were very old and dirty, or if the staff were rude.

“It’s true it’s a bit old, but it is properly cleaned and a clean inn. The proprietress there is a good person too…” (Innkeeper)

“Then, why?” (Leon)

The proprietress lowered her voice as if hesitant to say it.

“They say a ghost of a young woman appears there.” (Innkeeper)

Leon arrived at the inn that the proprietress had told him about. Its exterior was an ordinary inn indeed. However, while other inns were bustling with customers, this one was quiet. It seemed the rumors had really kept customers away. The proprietress had strongly worried, saying, “Are you really going…?” but Leon was not bothered by it.

“Even if there is a ghost, we can just exorcise it.” (Leon)

“Ghost?” (Arc/Iris)

“A ghost is the spirit of a dead person wandering this world.” (Leon)

“Spirit?” (Arc/Iris)

“Well, it’s not a physical body like ours. Imagine something like a faint mist.” (Leon)

“Hmm…?” (Arc/Iris)

The twins nodded as if they both understood and didn’t. Explaining ghosts to children was quite difficult.

“Hey… shouldn’t we not go?” (Meltera)

“Why are you scared?” (Leon)

“I-I’m not scared! I’m not afraid of ghosts!” (Meltera)

“Then, stop holding onto my back,” (Leon)

Meltera clung tightly to Leon’s back, trembling.

“You yourself are like a ghost anyway,” (Leon)

“That’s rude! Don’t lump me together with that!” (Meltera)

“You transferred your soul into another body. It’s similar,” (Leon)

That might be even more frightening.

“Ghost!” (Arc/Iris)

“I am not a ghost! Don’t point at me!” (Meltera)

The twins looked convinced, apparently thinking Meltera was a ghost-like being.

“Can ghosts be eaten?” (Arc/Iris)

“No, at least it’s not food.” (Meltera)

Meltera said indignantly.

“If I am similar to that, then, so are you!” (Meltera)

“Reincarnation is a little different though.” (Leon)

“It’s the same! Fine! Do as you please!” (Meltera)

Meltera yelled in frustration, and Leon pulled her inside the inn. The entrance door was open, so it seemed they were in business.

“Excuse me… Is anyone here?” (Leon)

However, no one appeared when they called out. Suspicious, they saw a young woman at the end of the hallway.

“Eek!” (Meltera)

“See, it’s not a ghost.” (Leon)

Meltera hid behind Leon, but the woman was alive.

She might be the proprietress of the inn. Still, she looked at them with suspicious eyes. Moreover, she had a gloomy atmosphere about her.

“Um… we want to stay here,” (Leon)

“A-guest!? W-welcome!” (Young Proprietress)

Suddenly, a cheerful voice called out. The gloomy atmosphere disappeared, and she rushed toward them at full speed.

“Thank you! Thank you! I will show you to your rooms, four guests!” (Young Proprietress)

She seemed extremely happy. Without asking, she tried to lead them to the rooms. Apparently, because of the rumors, they had almost no customers, and she did not want to lose these guests.

“Two rooms will be fine. I will stay in the same room as these two,” (Leon)

“Why!? I want to stay in the same room too!” (Meltera)

“You’re not a child anymore…” (Leon)

“B-but! What if a ghost appears!?” (Meltera)

Meltera still seemed afraid of ghosts.

“G-guests…” (Young Proprietress)

“Don’t worry. I’ve heard the rumors,” (Leon)

“I-I see…” (Young Proprietress)

“But it’s tough. There are almost no customers…” (Leon)

“Exactly!” (Young Proprietress)

The young proprietress cried loudly.

“It’s because of the rumors, this month’s losses are huge! At this rate, this inn will go out of business!” (Young Proprietress)

The situation was quite desperate.
