Just Like My Former Self

Just when Leon thought he had finally gathered some useful information,

“Ah, but I can’t seem to remember… I’m sure I’ve heard the name, though. Where was it…?” (Adventurer)

It seemed like the memory was hazy.

“Sorry about that.” (Leon)

“No, it’s fine.” (Adventurer)

Unable to get the person to remember, Leon ended up with no new information. He returned to Silue.

“I’ll keep an eye out too. If I find anything, I’ll let you know.” (Silue)

“Yeah, that’d help a lot.” (Leon)

For now, he decided to put his search for Zeta on hold and accept a request.

“Leon-kun, you’ve reached C-rank, haven’t you? In that case, you should be able to participate in this.” (Silue)

With that, Silue presented the following request.

===

[Ogre Hunting in the Ogre Forest – Request Rank B]

This is the annual Ogre Hunt. The Ogres, which breed in large numbers during this time of year, attack nearby villages to supplement their food supply. The objective is to reduce their numbers to minimize the damage caused to the villages.

Duration: Two days.

Participation Requirements: A party capable of hunting at least regular-type Ogres. Guild Rank C or higher.

Reward: Based on results.

===

“As it says here, adventurers enter the forest to hunt Ogres at this time every year. Ogre meat is valuable as food, and the reward is pretty good. That’s why it’s a very popular request, and some top adventurers from other countries even come here specifically for it.” (Silue)

“Drool…” (Arc/Iris)

While listening to Silue, the twins were drooling. Leon often used Ogre meat in his cooking during their camping trips, and the twins loved it.

“Especially this year, a party of S-rank adventurers will be participating, so Leon-kun, you’ll have the chance to see them up close!” (Silue)

Silue said this with a somewhat excited tone.

“…I’ve heard they’re incredibly handsome… I’m so looking forward to seeing them… and maybe even getting close enough to marry into wealth…” (Silue)

“Silue-neechan?” (Leon)

“N-Nothing! Yeah. Leon-kun, in five years, I’m sure you’ll be an S-rank adventurer. By the way, do you like older women?” (Silue)

“…I’ll participate, so please register me.” (Leon)

The Ogre Forest was located a few kilometers west of the capital. It wasn’t a very large forest. Its size was roughly half of the capital. The area had small hills, and from a distance, it looked like a shallow, dome-shaped plate. Since the demand for Ogre meat was so high, hunting in the forest was generally prohibited unless you had special permission from the kingdom.

Ordinary adventurers could only hunt Ogres that had come out of the forest and were attacking nearby villages. However, the breeding season for Ogres was an exception. Only adventurers capable of fighting Ogres were allowed to enter the forest for the two days dedicated to hunting them.

Today was the first day. A large number of adventurers had gathered in the square near the forest. Despite the condition that participants must be C-rank or higher, there were at least a hundred people there. This was likely due to it being the capital. Among them, of course, were Leon, the beastkin child, and the slime. Despite the suspicious looks cast their way, they waited without concern for the moment the hunting would begin.

“Heh, this year, I’ll hunt an Ogre by myself.” (Adventurer)

“You’re too weak for that. You’ll just have to team up with others like you always do.” (Adventurer)

“What did you say?” (Adventurer)

“Hey, no fighting!” (Guild Staff)

With so many rough adventurers gathered, it was no surprise that they weren’t staying quiet. Fights broke out between adventurers here and there, with guild staff stepping in to mediate. Then, at that moment, a loud commotion arose. Curious, Leon looked toward the source of the noise and saw a group of people gathering the attention of other adventurers.

“Heh, as expected, my beautiful appearance is bound to attract attention wherever I go.” (Adventurer)

A young man, with long golden hair for a man, casually swept it back with a practiced hand as he spoke those words. He was wearing a collection of ornate and stylish equipment, likely custom-made, which made him stand out clearly among the surrounding rugged adventurers. The members he led were also eye-catching. Among the many parties made up of men, three out of the four members, excluding the young man, were female adventurers. And all three of them were beauties who could rival the guild’s receptionists, causing the adventurers’ eyes to be fixed on them.

“What’s up with that flashy guy…?” (Adventurer)

“Hey, cut it out. That’s him. That’s Lancelot, the S-rank adventurer.” (Adventurer)

“No way.” (Adventurer)

“He’s strong, and he’s got beautiful women with him… I’m so jealous…” (Adventurer)

From the whispers around him, it seemed that the young man was indeed the S-rank adventurer Silue had mentioned. In other words, he had top-tier skill and accomplishments in the current world, someone everyone both admired and feared. At first, the adventurers had been irritated by the young man’s behavior, but it seemed they now understood he was from a “different world” and their gazes shifted to ones of envy.

“Hm? Could it be that they’re participants in the Ogre hunt too?” (Lancelot)

The young man’s attention was drawn to a certain group. A boy around ten years old with a slime on his head, along with two even younger beastkin. Yes, it was Leon and the twins.

“Heh, that’s not good, you guys. This isn’t a place for children like you. You should go back to the village.” (Lancelot)

Thinking that perhaps they were children from the nearby village who had gotten lost, the young man called out to them. Leon showed his guild card. He thought it would be quicker than explaining with words.

“Oh? You’re a C-rank adventurer at that age? Impressive!” (Lancelot)

The young man began speaking loudly, as if for everyone around to hear.

“When I was around your age, well, maybe even a little younger, I first defeated an Ogre! And that gave me confidence, which allowed me to climb the ranks of adventurers! And that’s how I ended up as I am now! If you keep at it, you might become someone like me in the future! So, do your best!” (Lancelot)

He, then, walked away, looking quite satisfied with himself. As Leon watched his back, he couldn’t help but think that the man was a bit of a narcissist.

(By the way, Silue did mention that there was an S-rank adventurer, didn’t she? I wonder where he is…) (Leon)

Little did Leon know, the very man he had just interacted with was the S-rank adventurer he had been thinking about.
