Are You an Idiot?

With Leon’s devastating blow, the golem was completely destroyed. The core, which had been the power source, was also shattered, making self-repair impossible. Just then, a presence descended the stairs at the back of the room.

“Impressive, Hero Leon. To destroy my masterpiece so easily…” (??)

“…!” (Leon)

Hero Leon. At those words, Leon couldn’t help but gasp. Though he had been called that in his previous life, he had never been referred to as “Hero Leon” in this life. Now, Leon was simply Leon.

“…Elf?” (Leon)

Descending the stairs was an elf. She was small, and her apparent age seemed about the same as Leon’s current age. Despite this, her chest was unusually full for an elf, who typically had slender builds. Filia, too, was no exception, with a notably flat chest.

“Could it be… Meltera-sama…?” (Filia)

Filia trembled as she spoke. It wouldn’t be surprising for the name of such a hero to come up when someone was in this tower, especially at its highest floor. However, Filia shook her head and denied it herself.

“She should have been an adult already over a hundred years ago…” (Filia)

Elves had long lifespans. It was said that they lived two to three times longer than humans.  Furthermore, their youth lasted longer as well.

However, there was still a limit. After surpassing 100 years, an elf would reach an age equivalent to a human’s sixties. At that point, wrinkles would begin to appear, and it would be difficult to maintain their youthful beauty. Yet, the elf before them didn’t even look like an adult. She appeared to be a girl who hadn’t yet reached adulthood.

“No, you are not mistaken.” (??)

The elf herself grinned and spoke, her expression and somewhat old-fashioned tone giving her a much more mature air than one might expect from a girl.

“I am Meltera.” (Meltera)

She declared this herself. If she wasn’t lying, it seemed that she was indeed the legendary hero. However, Leon couldn’t help but wonder why she appeared so much like a child. Just as he was about to ask, the girl looked around the room, her expression turning puzzled.

“What’s going on? Where is Hero Leon?” (Meltera)

Noticing the large hole in the wall, she suddenly scowled in anger.

“That guy! Was he so scared that he ran away? I won’t forgive him! This time, I’ll make you have a proper excuse for it! That’s why I’ve been holed up in this tower, sharpening my fangs all this time!” (Meltera)

She shouted, revealing intense rage and resentment. From her expression, it was clear that her relationship with Hero Leon had not been friendly. And yet, it seemed she didn’t recognize Leon as the same person standing before her. Leon, confused, spoke up.

“Well… Hero Leon has been dead for a long time, though?” (Leon)

“W-what did you say!?” (Meltera)

“You didn’t know that… He died in a battle against the Demon King.” (Leon)

“Y-you’re lying!” (Meltera)

Filia timidly interjected.

“W-what he says is true. Hero-sama died during the battle with the Demon King… If anyone would know, it would be you, Meltera-sama, since you traveled with him, right?” (Filia)

“Ugh…” (Meltera)

At Filia’s remark, the elf girl visibly flinched. Leon gave her a sharp look.

“…So, the story about you being his companion was a lie?” (Leon)

“I-it’s not a lie!” (Meltera)

“Then, why didn’t you know he was dead?” (Leon)

“We… parted ways along the way…” (Meltera)

“Really?” (Leon)

“…It’s true.” (Meltera)

“Then, I don’t think you need to look away.” (Leon)

The girl was sweating profusely, as if a waterfall was flowing from her. It was clearly suspicious. Most importantly, Leon himself didn’t remember any elf named Meltera. Then, as if she had resigned herself, the girl finally confessed.

“That’s right! The story about being his companion was a complete lie!” (Meltera)

“…Why would you lie like that?” (Leon)

“Because! I couldn’t tell the truth! Everyone expected me to go off and defeat the Demon King with the Hero, but in reality, I wasn’t even allowed to be his companion, and I had to return with my tail between my legs! There was no way I could tell anyone that!” (Meltera)

The truth, yelled in a reckless manner, seemed to freeze the surrounding time for a moment. Filia, who had grown up hearing about the elf hero from a young age, her face now devoid of any expression, was beyond shock.

Meanwhile, Leon thought…

I remember now! There was this elf who kept begging me to let her join as a companion! In the end, I sent her away because she was more of a hindrance!

She hadn’t looked like a child back then, but it was certainly true that an elf had followed him around. He never imagined she would harbor such resentment over it.

“That’s why, to avenge that humiliation, I’ve been researching magic here all this time to kill that guy! But then! But then I find out he’s been dead for ages!? What was all my effort for!” (Meltera)

The girl flailed her small arms and legs in anger. Leon couldn’t help but make a remark.

“Well, even without that, you’re not an elf, and after a hundred years, you’d have just died from old age anyway…” (Leon)

“Huh!?” (Meltera)

It seemed she had just realized it.

“…Are you an idiot?” (Leon)
