It’s Said That It was Built in Just a Few Days

The next day, Leon arrived at the tower, which was said to be the tomb of the mysterious elf.

“It’s so tall!” (Arc/Iris)

“It’s huge!” (Sura)

The twins and Sura exclaimed as they looked up at the top of the tower, which far surpassed the surrounding giant trees.

“According to legend, Meltera-sama is said to have built this tower in just a few days.” (Filia)

Filia proudly said this.

As it was the tomb of an elven hero, it was supposed to be a sacred place. Leon had thought it would be difficult to enter, but surprisingly, his request to enter the tower was granted rather easily by the Elven Duke. However, the condition was that Filia had to accompany him. It wasn’t that they doubted Leon, but they probably couldn’t allow someone to enter the tomb alone. But that was only part of the reason.

“The inside has become like a dungeon. Golems that protect the tomb wander around, and there are troublesome traps set in various places. It’s a very dangerous place. However, I regularly lead the knight order to conduct investigations here, so I’m familiar with the lower levels.” (Filia)

Normally, entry was forbidden due to the danger. In the past, external investigation teams had entered, so it wasn’t a completely forbidden area. That was why Leon’s request was probably accepted so quickly.

“However, the extent of my knowledge is limited to the lower levels. The difficulty increases as you go higher. In the past, we’ve attempted many times, but we’ve only been able to reach the tenth floor at most.” (Filia)

Looking at the tower’s height, it seemed like it could have around 50 floors.

If I get inside, maybe I can learn something.

While half-listening to Filia’s explanation, Leon thought to himself. The true identity of the mysterious elf Meltera. If this tower was indeed the tomb she created, there was a possibility of finding clues to uncover her true identity. That’s why, when the talk of a reward came up, he had asked to be allowed inside the tower.

“But are you really okay with this?” (Filia)

“Yeah. I’m interested in the companions the Hero traveled with.” (Leon)

“Well, if it’s you all, I don’t think it would be too dangerous.” (Filia)

Of course, he couldn’t tell the truth. He was pretending to be an innocent boy who admired the Hero. Arc and Iris, who were genuinely excited, helped make his story more convincing. They headed toward the foot of the tower. The entrance was guarded by a heavy gate, and on either side stood massive, intimidating giant statues. Nearby, the knight order’s station was set up, and it seemed like the elves were on guard duty.

“Something’s odd…” (Filia)

Filia frowned and muttered.

The elven guards seemed to be in a state of panic.

“Has something happened? I thought it had already been communicated that we would be entering the tower.” (Filia)

“F-Filia-sama… well…” (Guard Captain)

When Filia asked, an elf, who seemed to be the captain of the guards, began to explain the situation.

“Actually, this morning, the key to the tower that was being kept in the station has gone missing…” (Guard Captain)

“What?” (Filia)

“Moreover, the entrance to the tower is open… It seems that someone has possibly entered.” (Guard Captain)

There were always guards at the entrance, with shifts changing regularly. Of course, the guards on night duty had been keeping watch the previous night, but they had been put to sleep, it seemed.

“To be able to steal the key without anyone noticing, they must be quite skilled. Do you have any idea who the intruder might be?” (Filia)

“No, I can’t think of anyone in particular…” (Guard Captain)

“Well, I suppose someone like that wouldn’t have acted suspiciously in advance, would they?” (Filia)

Filia let out a sigh.

“Not only is this a sacred tomb, but it has also turned into a dangerous dungeon… Anyway, understood. From here on, I will enter the tower with them. If we encounter the intruder, we will deal with them. You all must guard this place more strictly than usual. There is no other exit besides here. If they attempt to escape, they will have no choice but to pass through this place.” (Filia)

Then she turned to face Leon.

“…Leon-dono, I’m sorry. It seems there’s something else we must be cautious about now.” (Filia)

“That’s fine, but… what could that intruder be after?” (Leon)

“They probably believe that Meltera-sama left behind some rare items. It’s not an unusual thing. Adventurers and thieves often come seeking treasure.” (Filia)

However, in reality, the interior of the tower held nothing but life-threatening dangers, and no treasures of any kind had been found so far. That was only in the lower levels, though. If they went to the higher levels, they might be able to discover something.

And so, Leon and the others entered the tower.

After Filia and the others went inside, the elven knights closed the doors. They had brought a spare key to replace the one that had been stolen, but for now, they did not lock the door.

Gogogogogogo…

“W-what is that sound?” (Elf)

“H-hey, look at that!” (Elf)

At the sudden disturbance, the elven guards began to panic. The two giant statues that had simply been standing still on either side of the gate suddenly began to move.

“They’re moving!?” (Elf)

“What is going on!?” (Elf)

Eventually, the two statues moved in front of the gate and stood side by side, facing the tower. Then, they raised their hands. At that moment, a mysterious light enveloped the door.

“Is that… a barrier!?” (Elf)

“Are you saying the giant statues used barrier magic!?” (Elf)

The elves were astonished by the unbelievable situation. Moreover, the barrier was not one to prevent entry from the outside, but one that sealed off escape from within.
