I Don’t Understand a Thing Even After Hearing It

Meltera, born as a member of the royal family of elves, was gifted with exceptional magical talent from birth, and even as a child, she became a mage whose skills none of the other elves could match. She wanted to prove her power in a broader world, so she left Sedria, going against the opposition of those around her.
She went on to achieve various accomplishments in many places, and before long, she came to be hailed as a hero. Eventually, when a Demon King appeared who would lead the world to ruin, she became a companion of the Hero. By supporting him with her powerful magic, they succeeded in defeating the Demon King.
When she returned triumphantly to Sedria, the elves praised her greatly. However, for some reason, she shut herself away in the tower she had built. Later, it was discovered that the Hero had lost his life during the battle against the Demon King. She must have felt responsible for that. Since then, she has never once left that tower.
As a long-lived elf, it is possible that she is still alive, but the prevailing belief is that she most likely took her own life inside the tower, and it is now mourned as her grave.
“And in response to the feelings of Meltera-sama, we cast off our previous exclusivity and began actively engaging in exchanges with other races.” (Filia)
As she solemnly looked up at the tower that stood taller than the surrounding trees, Filia concluded the old tale. The other elves also nodded with composed expressions.
Meanwhile, after listening to their story, Leon thought…
No, I don’t understand a thing even after hearing it! Who the hell is this Meltera!?
He had absolutely no recollection of her. In his previous life, Leon had no companions. He fought alone and defeated the Demon King by himself. Of course, there were times he fought temporarily alongside others, but they were all short-lived.
Could she have been one of those people? But, I wouldn’t call any of them companions. More importantly, I definitely fought the Demon King alone.
Even as he searched his memories, nothing came to mind. Perhaps the elves had conveniently altered history. Such things were by no means rare. For example, it often happened that a victorious nation would fabricate the misdeeds of the defeated side to justify its own triumph.
“Leon-dono? Is something the matter?” (Filia)
“N-No, it’s nothing. More importantly, this place is…?” (Leon)
Leon had been brought to a vast mansion in the center of the city. No, rather than a mansion, it might be more accurate to call it a palace.
Uhh, if I remember correctly…
Before Leon could recall, Filia answered.
“This is the royal palace. We would very much like to offer you our gratitude. Please, do come in.” (Filia)
It was the palace where the royal family of the elves resided. She also said that the knight order she belonged to was based in this district. Leon had expected to be taken to that knight order’s headquarters, but for some reason, he was being guided to a room in the depths of the palace.
“Please wait here for a moment. I will speak with my older brother right away.” (Filia)
Saying that, Filia left the room.
After being made to wait for a while, he was summoned by another elf and taken to a great hall. The space was refined and elegant in a way typical of elves, who value austere simplicity over extravagance or splendor. At the very back, a single elf was seated on a chair. He had the refined features characteristic of elves, of course, but beyond that, he exuded an air of nobility and grace that seemed to radiate from within. Filia stood beside him.
The young man spoke.
“I am the King of the Elves, Rubellia. Though at present, I govern this Sedria territory as a duke. I am also referred to as the Public King.” (Rubellia)
“The King of the Elves?” (Leon)
He never expected that he would be granted an audience with the king so suddenly.
“I heard the story from my younger sister. I understand that, in addition to the Trent and the Elder Trent, even a Forest Dragon appeared. If you had not come to the rescue, there was a high chance that lives would have been lost. I truly thank you from the bottom of my heart for saving my sister and our people.” (Rubellia)
Moreover, it seemed that Filia was his younger sister. In other words, she was of the elven royal family.
“I would have appreciated it if you had told me that beforehand…” (Leon)
If he had known in advance, he would have declined. To Leon, nobles and royalty were people he preferred not to get involved with. In his previous life, it had not been uncommon for those in power to try and exploit the Hero’s abilities.
“Hm? Now that you mention it, perhaps I didn’t say so.” (Filia)
Unaware of Leon’s inner thoughts, Filia gave a light laugh, saying, “My apologies, my apologies”.
But then, she quickly adopted a serious expression.
“Of course, we have absolutely no intention of using your power. As I said earlier, we simply wanted to express our gratitude.” (Filia)
She did not know about Leon’s previous life. Even so, it seemed she had some sense of what he was feeling. In reality, many people in power would see a boy who had not yet been hardened by the world as easy to manipulate, and try to win him over.
“I can guarantee that as well. On the pride of the elves. We elves are, by nature, a race lacking in such worldly desires. Besides, I am satisfied with our current way of life.” (Rubellia)
Rubellia spoke firmly, as if to reassure him.
Indeed, even Leon could not imagine a greedy elf. After that, Rubellia said he wanted to offer some reward for aiding the knight order. Leon replied that he intended to sell all the Trent materials he had obtained to the knight order, and that would be more than enough, but…
“That was my sister’s gesture of thanks, wasn’t it? I would also like to personally offer you something in gratitude. Is there anything you would like?” (Rubellia)
“…In that case,” (Leon)
Leon recalled the tower from earlier.
“I would like to be allowed into that tower.” (Leon)
