“Yeah. The culprit is one of you here.” (Leon)

““One of us here!?”” (Adventurers)

The adventurers were surprised by Leon’s words.

As they cast suspicious glances at one another, Leon said…

“Fire Lance.” (Leon)

He fired a spear of flame toward the ceiling.

“!!!” (Adventurers)

The flame pierced the ceiling, scorching the stone pitch-black. At the same time, several small shadows scattered in all directions.

“Birds?” (Adventurer)

“No, bats!” (Adventurer)

The true identity of those small shadows was bats. There were about five of them. As they hurried to escape, Leon fired another spear of flame to stop them. The bats tried desperately to dodge, but a few of them were hit directly by the spear.

“Guaaaahhh!” (Adventurers)

The next moment, screams echoed from within the rising flames, and something fell to the ground.

“Wha—!?” (Adventurer)

“Humans!?” (Adventurer)

Leon denied it, saying, “No, they’re not.” (Leon)

Looking closely, bat-like wings were growing from their backs. Their skin was pale, and fangs could be seen protruding from their mouths. Furthermore, their eyes were blood-red.

“Could they be… vampires!?” (Adventurer)

“N-no way!” (Adventurer)

“To think that vampires still survived…!?” (Adventurer)

The adventurers stared in astonishment.

Vampires were a type of undead monster. They had humanoid forms and high intelligence, and they were feared monsters who lived by sucking human blood. It was also said that they could turn the humans they sucked blood from into their own subordinates and control them. However, they were believed to have already gone extinct.

“In other words, the ones controlling the gang were vampires…” (Adventurer)

“And the reason they were abducting people was to suck their blood?” (Adventurer)

“Unbelievable…” (Adventurer)

A monster that hadn’t been seen in ages had been using a gang to kidnap… no, to abduct people. The purpose was not human trafficking but for bloodsucking. Moreover, by manipulating the gang, they had completely concealed their own existence. Even Henriette and the others couldn’t hide their shock at that terrifying truth.

The bats that had previously dodged the flame spear also revealed their true forms. A total of five vampires now stood facing the adventurers.

“For mere humans to have seen through us…” (Vampire)

“Indeed, it was we who controlled those men.” (Vampire)

Despite their identities being exposed, they showed no signs of being shaken. Rather, it was the adventurers, who outnumbered them, that took a tense step back.

“V-vampires are supposed to be classified as disaster-level threats even if there’s only one, right…?” (Adventurer)

Because of their troublesome ability to increase their numbers by sucking blood, even a single vampire was recognized as a disaster-level threat. The seasoned adventurers could not fail to grasp the danger of having five of them.

“But I heard their actual combat strength isn’t that big a deal! Now that we’ve captured the gang subordinates, this is actually our chance!” (Adventurer)

One adventurer shouted out. Spurred on by that encouragement, the adventurers regained their fighting spirit.

“Yeah! We have enough strength on our side!” (Adventurer)

“Let’s finish them all off right here!” (Adventurer)

The vampires sneered.

“Kukuku, it seems we have been greatly underestimated.” (Vampire)

“So fast!?” (Adventurers)

The five vampires simultaneously scattered in a blur, leaving afterimages as they rushed at the adventurers. Only Henriette and a few other adventurers managed to react in time.

“Hahaha, you too shall become my subordinate.” (Vampire)

“Eek!?” (Adventurer)

Several of the adventurers were easily caught from behind, sharp fangs thrust toward their necks—

Clang!

“…Huh?” (Adventurers)

The fangs that were supposed to pierce flesh were repelled. Some vampires even had their fangs chipped from the impact. Stunned by the unexpected resistance, they stood in shock.

“W-what is this…?” (Vampire)

“Why is it so hard!?” (Vampire)

“My fangs…!” (Vampire)

Leon revealed the trick.

“I figured you might try that, so I cast a defensive spell beforehand. With this, you can’t suck blood or control them.” (Leon)

“A defensive spell!?” (Vampires)

The vampires raised their voices.

“Our fangs can pierce even steel, you know!?” (Vampire)

“There’s no way a mere defensive spell could block us!” (Vampire)

The vampires, now truly flustered by the unexpected turn of events. In truth, although they possessed high agility, their physical strength and durability were not particularly exceptional.

Given their small numbers, if confronted directly, there was a possibility, however slight, of being overwhelmed. That was precisely why they had planned to quickly bring several adventurers under their control, to settle things in an instant, but that strategy had been completely thwarted.

“Don’t be fooled by appearances! It was this child who noticed us earlier as well!” (Vampire)

“Anyway, take out this child first!” (Vampire)

It seemed they regarded Leon as the greatest threat. All five of them leapt at him simultaneously. That decision could be said to have been the correct one… if not for the fact that their opponent was beyond standard limits. The next moment, the vampires were all slashed across their bodies.

“Guaaah!?” (Vampires)

Having received clearly fatal wounds, the vampires collapsed to the ground.

“To take out vampires in an instant…” (Kanae)

“…Still as absurdly strong as ever.” (Henriette)

“Beyond comprehension.” (Tina)

It was Henriette and the others who were dumbfounded.

“He… he cut them? All five vampires in that instant…?” (Adventurer)

“Huh? I didn’t see anything at all…” (Adventurer)

Among the adventurers, there were some who didn’t even understand what had happened.

“Playing dead won’t work, you know?” (Leon)

Leon spoke to the vampires, who were lying motionless in a pool of blood.

Unlike typical undead, vampires could feel pain. However, in contrast, they also possessed an abnormal level of regenerative ability, so the wounds they received should have already begun to heal… or so it was supposed to be.

“Why… why isn’t it healing at all!?” (Vampire)

“The same is happening to me! What is going on!?” (Vampire)

The vampires, realizing the strange phenomenon occurring within their own bodies, shouted in shock.

“It’s because the weapon has anti-undead enhancements on it.” (Leon)

Leon said it as if it were nothing of importance.

Now then, what to do?

It would be possible to finish them off as they were, but in order to learn the whereabouts of the missing people, it would probably be better to keep them alive.

When Leon proposed that idea…

“Yes, that would be best.” (Adventurer)

The other adventurers agreed as well. Of course, it was not necessary to keep all of them alive, so they randomly selected one of them. However, that body suddenly began to crumble to pieces.

“…Kukuku, do not underestimate us. If it means being captured by mere humans, I choose death instead!” (Vampire)
