Chapter 55

Uwa! What is this, scary!

I transformed into a skinhead adventurer named Dan Duster and memories and emotions flow into me. While thinking about this Kolter Kash, he was frightened of me.

Why, I wondered as I probed, and it seemed that at the encounter in the Adventurer Guild, he had been quite terrified of me.

That’s strange, I only carefully looked to memorize the face of a picture-perfect adventurer, and I don’t remember making a face of joy at finding prey. Should I clear up the misunderstanding later? No, I probably won’t get involved again, so I’ll leave it be. If I talk to him, he’ll just get scared.

But to think I’d learn about Volt’s past in a place like this. Unexpected. Well, I don’t know what use it’ll be, though. Even so, Kolter is a battle maniac, Volt is a slaughter demon, and Alice is probably the same. Now that I think about it, why do I even know such scary people? And on top of that, they’re obsessed with cutting me. Give me a break.

“Looking over here, do you need something, Ba… Mao… Baldy?” (Alice)

“You just tried to stop yourself from saying ‘Baldy’ but ended up saying it anyway. Apologize to Dan. This guy shaves every day to wear a helmet. Also, I’m not bald. My usual self is a Haniwa, so I just don’t grow hair. A Haniwa with hair has not a single shred of cuteness.” (Nobunaga)

“Cu… Cute?” (Alice)

Alice tilted her head.

Good grief, does she not understand?

“Cute means adorable, lovable.” (Nobunaga)

“No, that doesn’t apply to you.” (Alice)

What is she saying… ah, right, I’m in Dan’s form now. A bald old man having cuteness or lovability is indeed impossible.

“So, you were looking at me. Did you need something? If you’re going to apologize to the person below who collapsed from your skill, go alone.” (Alice)

“That’s not it. I was searching memories and Kolter Kash’s name just came up. Also, that was an unfortunate accident. No one is to blame. There isn’t a single person who should be condemned.” (Nobunaga)

Alice looked at me as if to say, “There’s no person, but isn’t there a Demon King?” but I pretended not to notice.

“Well, it’s not surprising. He’s famous enough that people tell children ‘If you do bad things, Kolter will come for you’. Also, in the Empire, he’s probably known for his exploits during times of war.” (Alice)

So, he’s treated like a Namahage. It sounds gentle when put like that, but in reality, he’s just a battle-loving person.

“But I’m jealous. In times of war, there’s no shortage of targets to cut, and more than anything, high-level people increase. There must have been plenty of worthy opponents to cut.” (Alice)

Here’s another one like him. The only difference is whether they love battle or love cutting.

“Truly a terrifying bunch. No, there’s no blood relation, so they’re not a family. Well, it doesn’t change the fact that I don’t want to get involved.” (Nobunaga)

Thinking about how they appear randomly without even blood ties makes it even scarier.

“You say that, but Demon King, you should be grateful to Kolter.” (Alice)

Why? If anything, he’s the root cause of producing that cut-happy old man who tries to kill me.

“Didn’t you realize from Colter’s story? Kolter challenged anyone and everyone to duels even his master, of course. Yet, with you, he lost the reason to cut. He told you to do something bad.” (Alice)

…Now that you mention it. But wasn’t that just ordinary morality or conscience guiding him?

“His master realized it through his travels. Killing thieves, Demon Kings, and enemies during war carried no punishment. But killing strong figures like the Imperial Guard Captain, the King, or high-ranking adventurers led to condemnation and exile. In other words, it was fine to cut bad people. Cutting anyone else caused problems.” (Alice)

For some reason, Alice passionately explained something obvious.

Of course, you can’t cut good people. Of course, people get mad if you cut important figures. Did he not receive proper education? Probably not. If he had, he’d have a slightly better head on his shoulders.

“At the very least, I now understand that instilling common sense into you lot would require immense sacrifice. No wonder Dan is terrified at the thought of being recognized by someone like you. …Ah, he’s even considering moving away from this frontier. I feel bad for him.” (Nobunaga)

Apparently, there are other causes as well, but it’s clear that I am one of them. He seems to be taking it seriously. However, I’m leaving tomorrow anyway. There’s nothing I can do to help. If we ever meet somewhere, I’ll apologize then. He has a memorable and easily recognizable appearance.

All that’s left is where he plans to go… Hmm?

“Alice, do you know of something called the Spirit Faith? It doesn’t seem to be the Main God Faith.” (Nobunaga)

One of the conditions for the relocation was that there be a Spirit Faith church. I thought it might be a different name for the Main God Faith in the Empire, but the Main God Faith still exists separately. Worshiping a blood spirit? Not a god?

“Never heard of it. The Kingdom only has the Main God Faith. Other than that… Oh, now that I think about it, I heard that the State Alliance has religions other than the Main God Faith. Maybe that’s the Spirit Faith.” (Alice)

From Dan’s memories, the only difference between the Main God Faith and the Spirit Faith is whether they worship a god or a spirit…?

“I was informed about the Demon King’s existence by the Adventurer’s Guild? And they were ordered to keep it secret? Talking about it would result in an adventurer qualification revocation?” (Nobunaga)

What is this? To begin with, I have no knowledge that the Primal God Religion teaches about the birth of the Demon King. Are they just indifferent to Demon Kings? No, they’ve already encountered the head demon, Warlord Don Orga, so a new Demon King should be even more concerning.

Then, is it just the Kingdom that’s special? A preferential treatment because of its exclusive Main God Faith? That’s ridiculous, declaring a Demon King’s existence is a matter of human survival. No way they’d decide such things based on favoritism, unless they’re utterly corrupt.

…I don’t get it.

“Haa, if only there were some all-knowing sage who knew everything, this would be easier.” (Nobunaga)

“If you expect me—” (Alice)

“Absolutely not.” (Nobunaga)
