Chapter 53

Thank you for reading at bayabuscotranslation.com)

Dinner was various vegetables and meat stewed together, but I didn’t know the name.

If vegetables could also be harvested in the dungeon, something like this could probably be made.

“And so, Nobutsuna-san, about the letter.” (Alice)

Ah, that’s right. The meal was just a side thing. Listening to Alice’s story was the main purpose.

“Certainly, you said something about a mistake and a great success. Let’s hear the details.” (Nobunaga)

It’s about this one. Maybe she caused some trouble. In that case, what should I do?

“It was processed, no, rather, it was treated as an official guild document, so it’s fine. Got it?” (Alice)

Sorry, I don’t get it at all. Processed as an official document? What’s fine? Explain the details, the details.

“Explaining from the beginning is a hassle. Well, there’s a beginner-level request for delivery of goods. This was what I tried to use. Even if it’s addressed to the Margrave, they will deliver it. By the way, the guild itself sometimes uses this as well. It’s similar to delivering official documents and such. And about the old lady at the reception, she saw my letter and mistook me for an adventurer who had taken a guild request. Even when I said it was addressed to the Margrave Fara, she treated me as a rookie who had made a delivery mistake. Moreover, with a kind-looking face, she just took it, saying she would mix it in with tomorrow’s dispatch. No matter what I said, she wouldn’t listen, and I was troubled. But later, I realized that instead, it was actually a great success.” (Alice)

At first, she spoke reluctantly, but by the end, she became eloquent and reported with a smug face.

How should I react to this?

I understood about the delivery request. I could also understand that the guild gave jobs to adventurers. As for the old lady… it can’t be helped, let’s give up. She’s strong-willed and pushy but a good person, so there’s no way to deal with her. But what’s with the “great success” at the end? Also, realizing it later is not good.

“Listen, Nobutsuna-san. There’s a big difference between a personally sent letter and a letter sent by the guild—” (Alice)

“Ah, I got it.” (Nobunaga)

Between an individual and an organization, the very value of the letter itself is different. Moreover, under the Demon King’s name, it might be judged as a prank. But if it’s through the guild, the Demon King’s name gains credibility… does it? It would certainly be eerie. That might instead enhance the Demon King’s image.

Alice, who was about to explain further with a smug face, now looked displeased because I understood it immediately.

Who was the one saying it was a hassle at first?

“So, the letter will be sent in tomorrow’s dispatch, and to Mustang, where the Margrave is… how many days? I checked the town where the Margrave is but didn’t check the number of days. Eh? Three days? Thanks, old lady. In three days, it will reach the Margrave. After that, one day to write and request a reply. Then, three days to return here. Furthermore, two days to the dungeon in the Great Forest of Owa. Considering possible delays, should I wait about half a month for the reply?” (Nobunaga)

“There’s also the possibility that there won’t be a reply. The other party is who they are, after all.” (Alice)

That’s true, and it’s also questionable whether there’s anyone who would deliver a letter all the way to the Demon King. That said, specifying a receiving location and having my current appearance known is also undesirable. Right now, I don’t want the humans to think this body has any connection to the Demon King.

Well, whatever. If the time comes, I’ll deal with it then. This whole matter is just something that would be nice if it works out. From what I heard from Alice, I don’t think they’ll be attacking us, and even if the allied nations are in trouble, I won’t be helping them for free.

“Even if it doesn’t work out, that’s fine. The real objective is the allied nations that are starting to move. This is just a side assistance. If it works, things get easier, and if it doesn’t, it just leaves a bit of uncertainty, but it won’t make things impossible.” (Nobunaga)

From what I’ve gathered, they’re still just stockpiling food, causing prices to rise. There’s still some time for leisure.

“Then, let’s return tomorrow morning. If there’s no response in half a month, we move to the main objective.” (Nobunaga)

“Eh?” (Alice)

Just as I thought about having my meal, Alice raised her voice. Looking at her, she seemed somewhat uncomfortable. And, when did she eat? Her plate was already empty.

“Well, I left my sword with a blacksmith. It was in bad condition since I got it, so I thought it was a good opportunity. And, well, the pickup is around noon tomorrow.” (Alice)

“It’s not like it takes a whole day or two, right? Then, it’s fine. In that case, let’s take a look around town tomorrow. It’s important to not only gather information but also see things firsthand. There’s also still the mystery of why only adventurers know about the Demon King’s existence. Do you know why, Alice?” (Nobunaga)

“No idea. The whole Demon King’s existence thing falls under the Holy God Church’s jurisdiction. Adventurers’ job starts after the Holy God Church informs the country. If you want to know, ask one of those Holy God Church meat sacks or the Empire.” (Alice)

She answered with a rather displeased expression, calling them meat sacks.

That way of saying it gives me a rough idea. But I see, I haven’t looked into the Holy God Church at all. In the first place, they were the original cause of disturbing my shut-in life.

I should investigate that area later.

After finishing dinner, Alice and I returned to our room.

Outside, the sun had already set, and it was nighttime, but people were still around. Now, when almost no one could recognize us in the darkness, was the perfect time for information gathering. Opening the window slightly more than usual to observe outside, I spotted a shining head. A bald, large-built man! He wasn’t carrying an axe, but it was the adventurer I saw at the guild.

He seems like he would know a lot. Transform!
