Return

When Tyr went outside, Randal was sitting down by the stairs, crying like a fountain. The 300 people who had returned were, of course, soldiers, and even Laika and Randal, but there was no one uninjured. Everyone had some sort of tragic scars left behind, and their armor was completely covered with both the enemy’s blood and their own.

“Nii-chan. Don’t cry anymore.” (Laika)

Laika and the subordinates were comforting Randal, but his tears did not stop at all, and there was no sign of him stopping crying. And while sobbing, Randal repeatedly mumbled as if in delirium.

“Out of 7,000 subordinates, only 300 people managed to make it here… My… my 6,700 brave subordinates…” (Randal)

“Ah. Tyr-sama.” (Laika)

Noticing Tyr, who had come outside, Laika and the subordinates all saluted at once. However, Randal only continued crying and, disrespectfully, did not even look towards Tyr. Tyr did not know that Randal was a general who cared so much about his subordinates, nor did he know that he was a person with such a strong sense of responsibility.

Is a general’s true nature not revealed when riding the wave of victory, but in the bitter experience of crushing defeat?

Tyr, while overlapping his former self with the still-crying Randal, recalled Hal’s scolding and spoke.

“Randal. Do not cry. If you, the general, are in such a state, it will affect the morale of the entire army.” (Tyr)

In response to Tyr’s words, Randal, squeezing out a voice that had gone hoarse from too much crying, said.

“Tyr-sama. The 7,000 soldiers that Tyr-sama entrusted to me, I have lost 90% of them. I have no excuse to my subordinates. I have no way to apologize to Tyr-sama either. And yet, shamefully, only I have survived…” (Randal)

“But you have returned!” (Tyr)

Tyr interrupted Randal’s words, grabbed his shoulders, shook him, and shouted loudly. Then, grabbing Randal’s face, which was drenched in tears, he yelled at close range.

“Listen well! The information has come in. You were surrounded in four layers by 5,000 Laplace troops and 20,000 Cali troops. To be honest, I was prepared for complete annihilation. But you fought with all your might, led your soldiers, broke through layer after layer of encirclement, and returned here! This is something to be proud of, and there is absolutely no need to blame yourself!” (Tyr)

For Randal to grow into a great general, merely lamenting this tragedy would not be enough. He had to learn many things from here on.

“So, what if you lost 90% of your subordinates! I have never counted the number of subordinates who have died up until now. The more blood a subordinate sheds, the more a general grows.” (Tyr)

Tyr felt like crying at his own words.

He did not want to justify the defeat. He did not want to justify the deaths of his subordinates. But right now, there was no choice but to think this way. Tyr, as if convincing not Randal but himself, spoke.

“Stand up, Randal. The duty of a general is to keep his face raised.” (Tyr)

Before he realized it, Randal’s tears had dried. And then, Tyr lifted up Randal, who could not stop hiccupping.

“This place is already surrounded. After resting for one day, we will immediately plan our escape.” (Tyr)

“…Yes.” (Randal)

“Answer!!” (Tyr)

“Yes!!” (Randal)

Thus, at least on the surface, Randal’s distress had settled, and now, they would attempt to escape from this fortress.
