Chapter 44

Having finished the business, I had everyone step back and instructed them to call Alice.
During that time, I became free and called up “Let’s Create a Dungeon”, and then I found it. A large number of statuses were displayed from the bag containing the Owa fruit. They were overlapping so much that I couldn’t see the details, but those statuses were probably the parasites hiding in the Owa fruit. I felt like I had found insects in a strange place, and it was quite depressing. That aside, I should be happy that I had found an easy way to spot parasites.
I immediately checked the Owa fruits that had been collected so far. Even though I have [Parasitic Immunity], I didn’t have a hobby of eating parasites. I immediately went to the kitchen and checked the Owa fruits stored in the refrigerator.
…Hmm, none of them are displaying statuses. They are safe.
I also did some experiments. The parasites seem to be quite weak creatures. I tried heating them, steaming them, and even just throwing them into boiling water, and the reactions from the parasites in the Owa fruits disappeared. When placed in the refrigerator or freezer, the reactions disappeared quickly as well, indicating that they are very weak to temperature changes. So, when cooking, I just need to heat or cool them, and when transporting them, I’ll have to carry them at room temperature.
Well, there’s no real problem.
After finishing the experiment, I left the kitchen, and almost at the same time, Alice came out from the bath, wrapped in cloth only around her chest and waist.
I admit I didn’t call for her, but still, would you just randomly take a bath? Isn’t that a bit beyond rude?
So, I gave Alice the Owa fruit I had been troubled with. She ate it after her bath, but it had the dead parasites in it.
“Now, the reason I called you is this. First, go get changed. We’ll talk after that.” (Nobunaga)
I wondered how it sounded to give orders to a nearly naked woman, but Alice tilted her head, apparently misunderstanding.
“What? Even though you’re a Demon King, seeing a woman’s naked body makes you feel lustful?” (Alice)
To be honest, Alice is very curvy. Her chest is prominent, and where it should be tucked in, it is tucked in. If you hide the numerous scars on her skin and the mountain-like stomach cracks, she could be called a beautiful woman. I can understand Lyle’s actions.
But that’s just in general terms. It has nothing to do with me.
“No, not at all.” (Nobunaga)
What I imagined was Alice, who would always rush in to strike. Even if she’s naked, she wouldn’t hide anything, charging straight at me. There’s no way I would feel lustful.
“I see. Well, I’ll go get changed. Thanks for the fruit.” (Alice)
I wish she’d stop thanking me. It gives me a sense of guilt…
And then, as if it were natural, Alice entered my private room. I didn’t feel any guilt.
—
“So, you want me to teach Lyle the Demon language?” (Alice)
“Yes, and also the human language, hmm… Teach it to Ran, would you? It’s troublesome if we can’t communicate with each other.” (Nobunaga)
It would be nice if I could just learn it with a skill like me. No, rather than saying I learned it, it’s more accurate to say it’s automatically converted.
“It’s troublesome, but I’ll manage. But normally, doesn’t one just understand it somehow?” (Alice)
That was what a genius-type, instinctual person would say. Only a select few, like Volt or her, could learn that way. For the average person, it wasn’t possible, and when I said that, Alice just tilted her head. This was going to be hard, either teaching or being taught.
“So, why are you teaching Ran the human language? If it’s just within the dungeon, teaching Lyle the Demon language should be enough, right?” (Alice)
It feels like she’s implying “don’t make me do something troublesome”, but that’s probably just my imagination.
“Just within the dungeon, yes.” (Nobunaga)
“Are you planning to go on some kind of expedition?” (Alice)
Alice looked at me suspiciously, and I looked back at her with eyes like I was looking at a pitiful creature.
…Well, she wouldn’t understand since her eyes are empty.
“It’s probably not what you think. Don’t do something reckless and call some monster like Volt.” (Nobunaga)
To clear up the misunderstanding, I explained a bit about what I was going to do.
“Soon, I’m going to the Empire. Of course, there’s also information gathering, but the main purpose is trade.” (Nobunaga)
“Trade? Are you trading with the human race?” (Alice)
I nodded in response to Alice’s question.
Well, trade is a means, not the goal, but there’s no need to tell her that.
“Yes. After following Volt, I found out that the Wari fruit is a luxury item. Also, things like the Arachid’s thread and other demon-specific items exist. There’s the issue of limited quantity, but that’s just a matter of time. Eventually, it will increase.” (Nobunaga)
If I really want to increase the quantity, I could have the little goblins make some handicrafts.
“For that reason, I’m sending a letter to the lord of the Empire. However, I don’t have letter paper. No, there’s paper, but there’s no envelope. Since it’s a letter to a lord, I can’t just hand over the paper as is. Do you have anything in your magic bag?” (Nobunaga)
If she says no, it would be a bit awkward, and I would have to make an envelope myself. I don’t want to be looked down on.
Alice thought for a moment and then raised her face as if she remembered something.
“Now that I think about it, I received a letter from the guild about your subjugation request. I don’t remember throwing it away, so it’s probably in the magic bag. Well, you’ll have to search for it, and it’ll be something used by the guild afterward.” (Alice)
“Reusing is fine. I like eco. Now, Alice, please search for it, erase the guild’s name, and write ‘Great Forest of Owa’s Demon King Nobunaga’ on it.” (Nobunaga)
“Understood. In that case, I will use the room so that I can search for it and give it to you immediately. Well, it can’t be helped.” (Alice)
What is she saying, even though she’s using it without permission? Well, I guess she understands that if she uses it without permission, I’ll kick her out.
“What about your house? Isn’t it under construction?” (Nobunaga)
“Hm? It’s going badly. It seems I can make a simple one, but something complicated is impossible. However, for some reason, I’m trying to make it more luxurious than normal, so it’s failing. Oh, in that case, I guess I have no choice but to use the room.” (Alice)
Alice reported this happily, and I clicked my tongue. She should just make a straw house or something. Even if wolves come and blow it away, Alice would probably be delighted to cut them down. However, it might have been a problem that she could only make something simple. It would have been nice if I could have taught her, but with just a feeling, building something wasn’t likely.
“It can’t be helped. I’ll try to do something about that with this matter. …Is there any chance that Lyle can actually do it? Try asking him.” (Nobunaga)
“Hmm… Well, I guess. But I don’t know when I’ll be able to ask him.” (Alice)
“Ah, punishment, huh. …What did he do?” (Nobunaga)
It was simply out of curiosity, but hearing it, I felt a little sympathy for Lyle.
First, he wore metal armor and raced with the Kobolds around the dungeon. The dungeon was a bit narrower compared to Owa’s Great Forest, but it could hold hundreds of demons, and even if one plowed and cleared farmland, there was still enough space. There were tree roots to trip on, and a small river flowed through.
Even just running around once was tough, and the race went on endlessly until he won against the Kobolds. Lyle, being a former adventurer, former knight, and current prisoner, could barely manage one and a half to two laps. From the third lap onward, Alice pulled out her sword and started chasing him. Though she wasn’t as strong as Volt, her strength and pressure were on another level. Lyle was no match. He had probably run for his life. Then, on the fifth lap, just when he thought he had finally beaten the Kobolds, Ran, smiling, arrived with the Arachnids. That was when Alice learned that Ran had called for me, and she came over.
By now, they were probably administering some kind of corporal punishment. I thought about peeking through the book but decided against it. I didn’t want to see a gruesome scene. I quickly decided to forget the story after hearing it. There didn’t seem to be anything good to remember.
The conversation ended, and I told her to search for the envelope and headed toward my bedroom. I wasn’t going to sleep, but I wanted a quiet place to write the letter to the lord.
“Hey, Maou, do you really think humans and demons can trade with each other? They’re of different races and have been killing each other for so long.” (Alice)
As she grabbed the doorknob, Alice asked a very obvious question.
To be honest, I don’t want to trade, regardless of whether I can or not.
My original plan was to be self-sufficient in the dungeon and just stay in seclusion. That hasn’t changed. However, if I start trading, I’ll have to meet the other party and talk. Who will be the one to negotiate?
I can’t entrust it to my demon subordinates, who probably don’t even know about currency. I can’t rely on Alice, who’s not exactly the sharpest, and Lyle still isn’t trustworthy. In other words, it’s only me. This will interfere with my dungeon seclusion plan, but there’s hope. As for Ran, I’ve been teaching her basic calculations. If she learns a few more things, I can have her negotiate on my behalf. Until then, my dungeon seclusion plan will be delayed.
But Alice probably doesn’t want this answer, and if it’s about whether it can be done or not, it’s a simple question.
“What have you seen in this dungeon? Evil demons, dogs, lizards, pigs, spiders, amorphous, sentient liquid beings all living in the same place. And at the top of them is this weird creature with a face like a clay doll. Compared to that, how easy would it be for humans and demons to exchange goods?” (Nobunaga)
It’s a combination that would make even America and the zoo pale. Well, it’s thanks to the title of Demon King.
“I see… Hm… Well, if you say so, then I guess it must be true. I’m not good at thinking about difficult things. I just think it’s not bad being loved by the demons here.” (Alice)
“Then, live with those demons you think aren’t bad in the same tier―” (Nobunaga)
“I absolutely refuse.” (Alice)
In an instant, Alice spoke and disappeared into my room.
I made a vow to myself. Soon, I would surely improve my building skills, create a better house for Alice on the second floor, and kick her out.
