Chapter 41

(POV switch – Nobunaga)
“Wow, this is delicious!” (Volt)
Seeing someone else enjoy their meal so much made me want to kill him for the first time.
In front of me were two portions of delicious-looking dinner. However, only one was decreasing. I truly wanted to eat. But if I ate, my stomach would rebel. Perhaps my body understood this, as my hand wouldn’t move even when I tried to bring food to my mouth. Knowing that, I watched Volt enjoy his meal right in front of me.
Why can’t I kill someone out of resentment? If I could curse them, I would do it immediately. When I get back, I’ll check if there are any curse-related skills.
“Hm? Hm? Can’t eat, huh? That’s too bad!” (Volt)
Oops, my arm slipped, and the fork went towards Volt’s mouth, while the spoon aimed for his eyeball. Without slowing down, the fork came in with enough force to pierce, and the spoon was approaching to scoop out, but he simply moved his neck and easily avoided it.
“Hoh-hoh-hoh, what you should eat is the food right in front of you, you know? I have nothing over here!” (Volt)
“What are you doing? Adults shouldn’t play around during meals!” (Landlady)
The landlady, who was bored due to the lack of customers, spoke in exasperation.
She is mistaken. The old man in front of me is not a good adult. He’s a bad adult who thinks only of killing, and I haven’t even been alive for a year. So, my chances of being an adult are low. I don’t even know if a doppelgänger has a concept of childhood or adulthood.
“By the way, the one with the scary face over there. What’s wrong? You haven’t eaten at all.” (Landlady)
“Landlady, it’s this guy. Um, what’s the name of that fruit that grows in the Great Forest of Owa? Well, whatever. I ate that and ended up with an upset stomach.” (Volt)
Volt pointed at me and laughed heartily.
Even though he’s had a drink, he shows no mercy. The pain is said to be unbearable, even for Benkei! Let him experience it!
I kicked his shin under the table, aiming for a blind spot!
“Did you perhaps eat the Wari Fruit that grows in shallow areas?” (Landlady)
However, sensing danger, Volt moved back significantly and stood up to go somewhere.
Wait, didn’t the landlady just say something?
“Is that bad?” (Nobunaga)
“It’s not a forbidden thing. But you might find parasitic monsters in the fruits that grow in shallow areas. If you eat one of those, you’ll be ‘parasited’ and end up with an upset stomach. Well, it’ll come out in a day or two, though.” (Landlady)
What the hell? Is this stomach pain not from overeating but from being “parasitized”? Furthermore, what kind of nerve does a monster have to try to “parasitize” a Demon King? From now on, I’ll make sure to kill them whenever I find one. I’ve never seen one, though.
“…I see. Is there no remedy for this?” (Nobunaga)
“Just a moment.” (Landlady)
The landlady said that and headed to the kitchen.
From the look of it, she must have a remedy. Hehe, I wonder what will happen next. My stomach condition is getting worse. However, this suffering will soon be over.
“Sorry to keep you waiting. Try drinking this.” (Landlady)
What she placed before me was a cup filled with green liquid.
What is that smell? It’s a scent that stings my eyes.
“Down the hatch!” (Landlady)
The landlady said that with quite a spirited tone.
However, if this will cure me… I’ll gulp it down in one go!
The sticky liquid spread in my mouth, with a chemical-like pungent smell wafting through my nose, and a chaotic taste that my stomach rejected. In other words, it was disgusting. So, disgusting that I felt like throwing up.
“Please don’t throw up here.” (Landlady)
If throwing up was a possibility, you should have said so beforehand, landlady! I never expected to have to go to the toilet for reasons other than my stomach pain…
“Ah, you can’t go to the toilet. Your companion just went in.” (Landlady)
Damn old man! I’ll kill him! I will definitely kill him someday.
“Ugh, did I drink too much? Oh? Where have you been?” (Volt)
I pressed my mouth to keep from throwing up and said that I had just gone outside to vomit.
What is this old man so pleased about?
“Damn old man, I’ll kill you someday.” (Nobunaga)
“Don’t worry. I’m planning on that too.” (Volt)
If I go for the kill, he’ll probably take that as an opportunity to counterattack. No good, I’ll just end up making him happy. I need to think up another plan someday.
“And landlady, thank you. I’d like to know how you made this, just in case.” (Nobunaga)
“I didn’t do anything special. I just used medicinal herbs that grow in the Great Forest of Owa.” (Landlady)
Upon hearing that, it seemed she had soaked the herbs for a few days. Apparently, there had been people who had eaten Wari Fruit and had ended up with parasites, so she kept it on hand.
When I asked her if she could give me a little, she readily handed me a small jar. It must not have been a particularly valuable item.
“Thank you. Please take the payment from that old man over there.” (Nobunaga)
“Why?! You should pay for yourself!” (Volt)
“I already gave you the money.” (Nobunaga)
Oh right, remembering that, Volt took out the cloth pouch that presumably contained money and tossed it to the landlady.
“This is all I have. You can have it.” (Volt)
“Oh, hey! Um, that landlady…” (Nobunaga)
Even if all my wealth disappeared, it wouldn’t have mattered since I lived in a dungeon without currency, but thinking about the future, I’d like to keep some leeway.
However, I couldn’t just forcibly take it from the landlady, so as I was flustered about what to do…
“You don’t need that much. You two are really close, huh? Here.” (Landlady)
She took out just one silver coin from the pouch and returned it to me. I couldn’t tell if it was expensive or cheap.
“But you two are quite wealthy, huh? How about staying for another night?” (Landlady)
“Haha, it’s a good suggestion, but I have urgent business in the royal capital.” (Volt)
“I also have urgent matters to attend to.” (Nobunaga)
When I opened the pouch, it was still filled with the same amount of coins as when I handed it to Volt, including multiple copper, silver, and gold coins.
Did he not use them much?
“Too bad. Well, if you come by again, be sure to drop in.” (Landlady)
After that, I ate what could be considered the first proper meal I had since being born in this world.
