Demon King VS Sword Saint

(POV switch – Volt)

“By the way, you all interacted without any issues despite being completely different species. I thought demons would consider different species as enemies.” (Volt)

“That’s right. Normally, we wouldn’t be particularly friendly, but we wouldn’t be hostile either. However, we often overlap in hunting grounds and territories, which can lead to conflict in those cases.” (Ran)

I see, so that’s how it is. Indeed, I’ve never heard of demons destroying another species’ settlement unless the Demon King was involved.

“In our case, under the Demon King’s orders, disputes between species are prohibited. Individual conflicts seem to be permitted, but since entering the Demon King’s protection, we haven’t suffered from food shortages. A while back, our population increased significantly, but we managed by expanding our fields and hunting outside. Therefore, there’s hardly a reason to fight.” (Ran)

It’s almost like a benevolent ruler. Providing shelter for his subordinates and ensuring they don’t suffer from hunger. I would want the nobles in the outside world to learn from him.

But thinking about the underlying schemes makes me want to laugh. This Demon King truly is a king. He presents himself as benevolent and prepares behind the scenes, and when the time comes, he’ll provide some reason to mobilize the demons en masse. The demons would gladly die for him. After all, he’s benevolent. It must be correct.

It would surely be better than just being ordered around. It would definitely be enjoyable.

“What a rare Demon King.” (Volt)

He’s on a completely different level than the ones I have slain until now. He’s thoughtful and acts accordingly.

“Yes. The Demon King we’ve heard about is entirely different from this one. It’s said that Demon Kings possess strength yet are brutal, favoring their own race while treating others as slaves. However, our Demon King doesn’t favor any race and thinks about us. He’s a wonderful person. We have arrived. This is the door to the throne room.” (Ran)

While we were talking, we had already arrived. I wanted to hear a little more, but it couldn’t be helped. After all, he was my target.

I placed my hand on the door and suddenly realized.

“Aren’t you coming in?” (Volt)

“No, the Demon King instructed that no one else is to enter. He mentioned that he has matters to discuss with you alone.” (Ran)

Hahaha, you’ve got to be kidding. There’s no way he has anything to talk about with me before even meeting. It seems I’m being watched closely. However, the fact that he invites me here without doing anything suggests he has something in mind, or perhaps he’s confident in his own power. Either way, it’s interesting.

“Thank you for the guidance.” (Volt)

“Not at all. I shall take my leave now.” (Ran)

With that, the Arachne returned to the settlement.

I slowly opened the door. There was no sign of traps. Upon entering cautiously, it felt like a completely different world. A chandelier dazzling with light, a throne that shines on its own, a spotless red carpet. And within this space, there was an awkward-looking dummy.

“Nice to meet you, Volt Kash-dono. I am the Demon King ruling over this dungeon.” (Nobunaga)

Ah, so that is the Demon King. Hmm, just as Alice described, a strange appearance. Is he really a Doppelgänger Demon King? Moreover, I hardly sense any power.

“Nice to meet you, Nobunaga-dono. I am known as the ‘Sword Saint’ in the outside world.” (Volt)

Both of our names were already known, which was a small form of attack. If we were to negotiate, we would usually start with such trivialities, but…

“So, what does Volt-dono want?” (Nobunaga)

Unfortunately, I was not in the mood to negotiate.

“I’ve come to slay you, Nobunaga-dono.” (Volt)

In that moment, I had a very bad feeling. It felt dangerous to be here.

Instinctively, I jumped sideways, but nothing seemed to happen. However, the Demon King clearly seemed shaken… or was he? His strange expression made it hard to tell.

“What the hell did you just do?” (Volt)

I asked, knowing it was a long shot. However, the results were not promising.

“…Could it be that you avoided it without understanding what it was? It was supposed to be a complete surprise.” (Nobunaga)

It seemed he did something, but what it was, I couldn’t tell. But, somehow, it felt like I should avoid that, or else it would lead to troublesome trouble. Then, it was my turn. I slowly drew my beloved sword.

“Now, are you ready to be cut down, Maou?” (Volt)

“You truly are a level 200 opponent. A foe beyond my imagination. Very well, let’s go with Plan B.” (Nobunaga)

With that, the Demon King instantly changed his form. He turned into me.

Oh, that’s a poor strategy, Demon King.

(POV switch – Nobunaga)

I might have made a mistake. That was what I thought when I found myself in Volt’s form. It wasn’t that I had misused my unique skill. I now completely possessed Volt Kash’s powers. At the same time, I also inherited his knowledge and memories. Among them was a terrifying memory.

Volt Kash had slain hundreds of Doppelgängers.

At one point, he focused on hunting down Doppelgängers that could put up a fair fight. It was exhilarating. An opponent with equal power, skill, and thought processes. He fought and fought, and then he realized. He could always win against the Doppelgängers.

Indeed, the battles were equal. But when he looked back, he found that he never really struggled at all. With each fight, he learned and improved, while the enemy did not. There was an absolute difference there. Since then, Volt stopped hunting Doppelgängers exclusively. He realized that they were easier than he thought.

But could I fully control this body? I could, as that was the nature of the skill. However, could I learn and evolve? The answer is no. It only reflects the opponent at that moment. I could not become more than that. Still, I have some options.

“Too bad, Maou, you can’t win against me as me.” (Volt)

“Indeed, you alone would not be able to win against me.” (Nobunaga)

With my sword still poised, I took a breath.

“Chestoo!” (Volt)

With all my might, I struck down.

According to my memories, Volt would typically take the initial hit to gauge his opponent’s strength, but…

“—tch.” (Volt)

He jumped back to avoid it. He must have somehow grasped the meaning behind that initial strike.

“You bastard, what was that? That wasn’t your sword!” (Volt)

“Let’s call it Shigen-ryu. I just thought I’d give it a try, and surprisingly, I could actually do it. As expected, you’re beyond the norm (cheat).” (Nobunaga)

The sword technique from “Otherworldly Intelligence”. If I used this, my chances of winning would be quite high.

“This body is convenient. It allows me to do what I want to do!” (Nobunaga)

Once again, I made a vertical slash, and he barely managed to dodge, but as expected, before he could counter…

“Yatō!” (Nobunaga)

I lifted the sword I had just brought down.

He reacted a moment too late to the upward strike and stepped back, but a line of blood appeared on his cheek.

“…This is the first time. I’ve struggled against a Doppelgänger since reaching level 200 and drawn blood.” (Volt)

“I would be glad if you lost right here.” (Nobunaga)

“Don’t be ridiculous. I haven’t even cut you yet. I’ve seen your sword and want to try out a technique of my own!” (Volt)

With blinding speed, I executed a horizontal slash.

Judging it would be impossible to block, he attempted to parry, only to realize something shocking.

He wouldn’t be able to block this strike!

It was a powerful blow, and I aimed to cut both his sword and his body in one strike.

The sword shattered.

“Strange.” (Nobunaga)

His arm was severed.

“Body!” (Nobunaga)

And then…
