First Battle

Tyr, having launched a sudden invasion into the Kali Kingdom, faced no response from the Kali side whatsoever. The combined forces of the 5,000 Warden army and the 5,000 mercenaries that joined along the way quickly scattered the border guards of the Kali Kingdom and occupied the various cities along the border.

“Tyr-sama. The 5,000 Warden troops that had set out late will arrive tomorrow.” (Hal)

“Got it.” (Tyr)

He wanted to advance as far as possible while the enemy was in chaos. After merging with the remaining troops, he intended to resume the march immediately.

“Excuse me.” (Randal)

“Randal, I’ve been waiting for you.” (Tyr)

Tyr called Randal for the upcoming operation.

“According to a report from Urt, the remaining 5,000 soldiers should arrive tomorrow.” (Randal)

“With that, we’ll have a total of 15,000. It’s finally time for a full-scale invasion.” (Tyr)

“That’s right. Randal, is there anything you’re worried about for the full-scale invasion?” (Tyr)

Randal thought for a moment before recalling something and opening his mouth.

“There is one thing that concerns me.” (Randal)

“What is it? Speak.” (Tyr)

“Yes. In yesterday’s battle against the border guards. While the Warden army, primarily composed of students learning practical skills at the university, is highly motivated and brave, the mercenary unit is not very proactive in battle.” (Randal)

“That’s true. It may not be reasonable to expect enthusiasm from mercenaries.” (Tyr)

Randal’s concern was precisely what Tyr had been worrying about as well.

Mercenaries were soldiers who had thrown themselves into battle to make a living.
They were primarily focused on survival, making it the most important aspect of their existence.  As a result, they tend to dislike fighting the enemy and were reluctant to exert themselves for their comrades or country.

“We need a minimum number of soldiers, so we require the mercenaries. Unlike peasant soldiers, their abilities are unquestionable.” (Tyr)

Although Tyr had been granted the right to conscript citizens from Casablanca, he opted to hire mercenaries because of their baseline competence.

“However, we’ll soon be facing the main force of the Kali Kingdom. I don’t want to entrust my back to the mercenaries.” (Randal)

Randal was right. A

s they advanced deeper into Kali Kingdom territory, the mercenaries’ passive attitude would become a headache. Tyr needed to do something about the mercenaries before it was too late.

“I understand. Call Hal and Laika as well. We’ll hold a strategy meeting for tomorrow and beyond.” (Tyr)

After a while, Tyr gathered Hal, Randal, and Laika around a map.

“Tomorrow, the delayed Warden troops of 5,000 will arrive. According to Urt’s information, the Kali army is approaching with a force of 20,000. If things continue like this, we should clash with the Kali main force next week.” (Tyr)

“It’s finally here…!” (Laika)

Laika murmured excitedly.

It would be their first large-scale clash with the enemy. This battle would reveal the enemy’s strength and combat style. In that sense, it could be said to be a very important battle that would have a significant impact on the future of the war.

“I will give the orders.” (Tyr)

*Tsu*

At Tyr’s words, the three of them straightened their posture.

“Randal.” (Tyr)

“Yes.” (Randal)

Tyr tapped the map with his finger.

“Lead Laika and the Warden army of 8,000. Flank them and attack from behind.” (Tyr)

“Understood!” (Randal)

“Hal.” (Tyr)

“Yes.” (Hal)

“I’ll leave 2,000 of the Warden army to you. You’ll be in charge of supporting us.” (Tyr)

“Understood.” (Hal)

This would be the unit responsible for restoring the formation should their army collapse. As long as they didn’t lose in this battle, she would have no work to do.

“I will lead the 5,000 mercenary unit and clash with the main force of Kali.” (Tyr)

At Tyr’s statement, the three of them simultaneously looked uneasy.

“Tyr-sama.” (Randal)

“What is it?” (Tyr)

Randal could not help but voice his concerns.

“That is extremely dangerous. The enemy has 20,000 soldiers, yet you would face them with only 5,000? Moreover, you would be leading a unit with low morale!” (Randal)

Randal had just pointed out the laxity of the mercenary unit to Tyr moments ago. Yet, to clash with the enemy’s main force using the mercenary unit was too dangerous. But Tyr was fully aware of this.

“Yes, it is indeed dangerous. However, in order for the mercenaries to become a reliable fighting force in the future, we must increase our sense of unity like this.” (Tyr)

For a while, they would likely win using the soldiers from Warden. However, when the enemy brought a large army, and the Warden troops became fatigued, they would inevitably need the mercenaries’ strength. He could not afford for them to continue fighting in a passive manner like before. They were attempting to invade a nation with just 10,000 and 5,000 soldiers. This much risk was necessary.

“Although it is the first battle, it is also a pivotal moment. The success or failure of this expedition depends on it, so engrave that in your hearts and let’s get to work.” (Tyr)
