Carrying Thoughts (3): Run!

Guided by the white cat, I discovered the entrance to the underground without hesitation and stepped onto the staircase leading down. After a time similar to when I entered the underground passage from the mansion, I emerged into a corridor after descending the stairs. To be precise, it was pitch dark, so I couldn’t see, but it was likely a corridor.
The only light illuminating my path was the faint glow of the white cat. I cautiously placed my hand against the wall to search for the way. Since my hand touched the wall on the right side, considering the position, there was probably no path to the east. The wall was also in front of me. It seemed that the corridor extended only to the west.
In contrast to the white cat, who turned back to look at me while walking lightly and waiting, I had to proceed carefully. If this were the underground passage I knew, it had clearly not been maintained for quite some time. The floor might be cracked, and some parts could even be collapsed.
Perhaps feeling a bit impatient with my slow pace, the white cat meowed, “Meow”/
“I know. I want to hurry too but just wait a moment.” (Lux)
I didn’t understand what the white cat wanted to convey. However, like when it led us to the mansion, there was an atmosphere that made me feel something was there.
As I advanced through the dark corridor, feeling a bit impatient myself, my right hand, which had been resting on the wall, suddenly found empty air. The wall had ended. This meant there was a path to the right. However, at the same time, I could faintly hear the sound of water coming from the left.
I knew one place in the underground passage where there was a sound of water, the hidden flower bed beneath the artificial lake. Without hesitation, I directed my feet leftward, towards the south. After walking for a while, the end of the corridor began to brighten, and I felt a small sense of relief. From here, I started to jog.
When I emerged into a bright area, I found myself directly beneath the artificial lake, as expected. The northward route that I hadn’t taken when I previously explored the underground passage was connected to the research building. As I glanced back toward the north from which I had just come, the white cat meowed again.
“Oh, sorry, sorry. Let’s go.” (Lux)
I passed through the hidden flower bedroom and began to proceed along the route I had previously walked toward the mansion. After exiting the hidden flower bedroom, I was once again enveloped in darkness, but since I had walked this way once before, I confirmed its safety. This time, I moved forward with assured steps.
The white cat continued to glow faintly, leading me, and then, it stopped at a certain spot.
“Huh? I thought the mansion was a bit further ahead?” (Lux)
As I muttered and tilted my head, the white cat turned right.
“So, this is near the old school building?” (Lux)
Following the white cat again, I felt a step down underfoot. It was a staircase. I advanced here carefully, raising my hand above. After a while, my hand touched the ceiling. I had arrived at a door. With a firm push, the door slowly opened upward, letting light in.
“So, this was here…” (Lux)
The place I emerged in was a thicket slightly away from the entrance of the old school building. I shouldn’t have found it no matter how much I searched the inside of the school building. The entrance was outside.
Without time to indulge in my thoughts, I crouched in the thicket and surveyed my surroundings. A few soldiers were wandering around the main street in front of the old school building. As I pondered what to do, the white cat swiftly headed toward the old school building. I too slipped into the old school building cautiously, trying not to be noticed.
Inside the old school building was surprisingly quiet. That made sense. Not only the students but almost all school personnel must have headed to the venue for the competition or been dispatched for guarding the city of Rodon.
Even so, I proceeded with some caution, searching for the white cat. However, the white cat, which had been waiting for me until a moment ago, had suddenly vanished.
“Is it on the second floor?” (Lux)
While I was climbing the stairs, a voice echoed from the second floor.
“Let go of me!!” (??)
I hurriedly rushed up and found two students struggling in front of the newspaper club room. One of them was Gellar. Gellar was being held by the arm and was resisting. The one holding her arm was Mogi, the student who had sold us out. Without hesitation, I pulled out my slingshot from my pocket and immediately aimed at Mogi.
Distracted by Gellar, Mogi, who was slow to notice my arrival.
“Ah, you, ugh!!” (Mogi)
He took a direct hit from my magic bullet to the temple, floating for a moment before flying backward onto the hallway. Mogi skidded to a stop on the floor, and it seemed like he had received a good one, as he lay twitching.
“Gellar, are you okay?” (Lux)
“Lux… I’m glad… I could see you…” (Gellar)
Seeing Gellar’s face, which looked a bit like she was about to cry, and feeling a bit angry about Mogi’s actions, I first asked Gellar, “Before we discuss the details, do you have any rubber bullets? Right now, I only have paintballs for mock bullets.”
“Uh… I have one, just in case.” (Gellar)
“Good, I’ll borrow one.” (Lux)
After receiving the rubber bullet, I walked over to where Mogi was sprawled out in the hallway, aimed the slingshot, and released it toward his forehead.
“Yah!” (Mogi)
Mogi shouted loudly again, drooling as he completely fainted.
“Now, let’s go over it again, Gellar. Are you okay? What have you been doing until now?” (Lux)
With a very refreshed expression, I smiled at Gellar, who had been momentarily frozen, but then she suddenly changed her expression, approached me quickly, clung to me, and brought her face close to mine to squeeze out her words.
“It’s serious!! If it continues like this, everyone! Many people will become sacrifices!!” (Gellar)
That was the first time she had shown a face pleading for help.
