White Cat

“What’s wrong?” (Bianca)

Hearing the voice of a cat, Bianca spoke to me, Lux, who was frozen while looking back.

From her expression, it seemed that Bianca couldn’t hear the cat’s voice, right? What about that white tail swaying in that spot just now?

After a moment’s hesitation, I said.

“A white cat… Sorry, I have to go. Can you go ahead?” (Lux)

I conveyed this to Bianca, and before she could say “Wait a minute”, I started running towards the room at the end of the hallway.

“Ah.” (Bianca)

Bianca hesitated whether to chase after Lux, when Lulu-san said without turning around.

“What are you doing? Let’s go!” (Lulu)

Bianca glanced back at Lux’s figure one more time before chasing after Lulu.

From the cells where keys were being opened one after another, we returned to the upper floor with Heinz, Lites, and Rick-san. There, Sonia, Maria, and others, who had been imprisoned on the upper floor, were present, and we rejoiced in a brief reunion.

Soon after, Sonia asked.

“Where’s Lux? Isn’t he with you?” (Sonia)

Heinz, on the other hand, questioned.

“Eh? Wasn’t he with Sonia and the others?” (Heinz)

It was at that point that Lulu noticed Lux was missing and looked around, saying, “Huh, where did that guy go?” When Bianca explained the situation.

“I thought I heard a small voice say something about a white cat, and then he said he had to go… in the opposite direction of the stairs…” (Bianca)

Lulu scrunched her lips.

“A cat? What’s that about? Was he scared?” (Lulu)

In response, the members of Catrap murmured seriously.

“A white cat…” (Catrap members)

“…What’s with you guys… that’s kind of creepy?” (Lulu)

Seeing Lulu react slightly taken aback, Heinz spoke on behalf of everyone.

“Ah, I’m sorry. But if there was a white cat, I think Lux must have had something to do.” (Heinz)

Just as Lulu was about to question further about the white cat, Mitia, who was looking outside from the second floor, shouted.

“Enemies are coming!” (Mitia)

“Tch, we’ll talk more about it later. We’ll intercept them. Don’t kill them if you can help it. Use mock bullets as much as possible. If we kill them, it’ll be troublesome. I’ll take care of the first floor. Don’t wander around, or I might accidentally blow you away. Just buy us some time.” (Lulu)

“If we buy time, will it work out?” (Sonia)

“Who knows? But if we can blow away all of Deran’s soldiers, then whatever nasty plans they have, there won’t be any problems, right?” (Lulu)

The research building was designed to minimize windows for security reasons. Moreover, all of the few windows faced west towards the corridor, making it impossible to enter from the eastern forest.

It was a building quite suitable for defense, and rightfully so. The academy was a military facility, and the research building was structured to be able to barricade itself in case of emergency. Despite being a relatively large underground building, there was only one staircase in the entire building to narrow the enemy’s movement line.

Leaving the first floor to Lulu, Heinz and the others scattered on the second floor to positions suited to their ranges, shooting at the enemies from the windows. Meanwhile, on the third floor, the researchers were gathered, and in case they lost, they had been told to claim they had been pushed upstairs under duress.

Additionally, only Bianca was to take advantage of her class’s characteristics and go up to the third floor to shoot down from a high position, so she headed up with the researchers.

“Be careful of the sniper!” (Heinz)

Even before hearing Heinz’s words, they were shooting mock bullets while trying to hide as much as possible. Lites, Rick-san, and the two Heavy Troopers (Armor) also used the guns available in the research building to provide cover.

As expected, considering they were soldiers hired by the military nobles, when they saw us resisting with only mock bullets, they aggressively invaded the building. However, the enemy soldiers who invaded the building did not come up to the second floor.

“Lulu-sensei… this is bad…” (Lites)

Lites said with a look of disbelief while watching the stairs.

“Lites, they’re coming!” (Heinz)

At Heinz’s shout, who shot out of the nearest window.

“Yes, yes! I, Heinz-sama, will definitely return safely!” (Lites)

He replied deliberately using honorifics. I could see Lev, who was with Heinz, silently nodding.

“Maria! Are you okay? Don’t overdo it!” (Hana)

In the spot where Hana, Maria, and Sonia were lined up to provide cover against the enemy outside, Sonia was worried about Maria while shooting her gun.

“I’m fine! I can shoot a sidearm too!” (Maria)

Ignoring Sonia’s concerns, Maria shot her gun with a slightly cheerful expression.

“Maria, you seem to be having fun, huh?” (Sonia)

“Is that so? I guess so. I’ve been alone for so long, so being with everyone is fun!” (Maria)

“That’s true. Fighting with everyone is fun, indeed.” (Sonia)

As Sonia heard the word “everyone”, Lux’s smile flashed through her mind.

“Ratt-kun… maybe you should be a sniper instead?” (Frank)

While being exasperated, Ratt-kun was hitting the soldiers coming at him with bullets. This time it was a bullet barrage, so he couldn’t use the weapons of the Spearman (Lancer) due to easily running out of magic. Therefore, Ratt-kun initially used a gun for the Shooter, but it missed spectacularly.

“Don’t you think you need to shoot with your shoulder supported?” (Frank)

After hearing Frank’s suggestion, Ratt-kun awkwardly tried shooting with a sniper rifle in a very cramped position, which turned out to be surprisingly effective. In fact, it was a mystery how he could hit like that in such a position.

“No way, climbing a tree is impossible for me. I’m not suited for that.” (Ratt)

He answered leisurely while firing mock bullets one after another.

“Frank, you’re also looking pretty fit, huh?” (Rick)

Rick-san remarked about Frank’s shooting, which was not bad at all.

“Well, I’m always shooting for practice since I’m reassembling my gun.” (Frank)

After hearing Frank’s words, Rick-san nodded in understanding.

“You should lower your waist a bit more to stabilize your aim.” (Rick)

He was teased and, smiling wryly, did as told.

(POV switch – Lux)

I opened the door to the room at the end of the underground hallway, following the white cat. Inside, it looked a bit dusty, resembling a storage room that wasn’t used much. The room was dimly lit, but I quickly spotted the white cat. Strangely, only the white cat appeared to glow faintly.

I silently approached the spot where the white cat was. When I got closer, the cat meowed at the wall.

“…Is there something here?” (Lux)

When I touched the wall, it bent slightly. It seemed that a thin wooden panel had been nailed on. I grabbed a nearby metal rod and struck the panel. With a cracking sound, the panel ripped a bit. It seemed that something was indeed hidden behind it.

I inserted the rod into the crack and widened the hole. When I forcibly peeled it away, there was a space where a person could hide. The white cat then jumped into there and playfully touched my feet.

Illuminated by the faint glow of the white cat, there was a door. The design of that door resembled one I had seen in the mansion. It was a door leading to an underground passage.
