“What is all this commotion!?” (King)

The large door to the venue opened, and King, the father of Prince Rudolf, entered. Behind the King, nobles followed in a procession. Among them were Duke Edel, the father of Carlotte, Lord Emerald, her uncle, and Lord Carlos, her brother.

These adults had been attending a party held only for guardians in the adjacent venue. Most of the students at the academy were the children of nobles. Almost every noble in the kingdom was attending, given it was the graduation ceremony. The graduates hastily kneeled at the King’s arrival.

“Raise your heads. I have received a report that there has been a commotion. What has happened?” (King)

The prince, who had been on the podium, was the first to be asked about the situation. He answered boldly.

“Yes, Father. I have broken off my engagement with Lady Carlotte Edel, daughter of Duke Edel.” (Rudolf)

“Breaking off the engagement…!!” (King)

The King was left dumbfounded, his face filled with surprise. After a brief pause, the King’s expression shifted to one of shock as he processed the situation. A murmur rose from the nobles behind them. Among the voices, one could hear, “Wasn’t Prince Rudolf supposed to be engaged to Lady Carlotte?”. Carlotte felt as though she wanted to disappear into a hole.

Why do I have to endure such humiliation?

“I do not acknowledge the breaking off of the engagement. There is no way I could accept that!” (King)

The King’s voice trembled with anger, but the prince, either unaware of or unconcerned by his father’s fury, continued speaking freely.

“With all due respect, Father, I have come of age with my graduation from the Royal Academy. I can break off the engagement of my own will.” (Rudolf)

Indeed, according to the laws of this country, that was true.

Well, it might be the first time in history that someone has broken off a political marriage of their own volition. Carlotte, having already lost interest, added a detached comment as though it were someone else’s problem.

“Carlotte. Is what the prince says true?” (Carlos)

Her brother asked. His tone was calm, but Carlotte, who had been with him for years, could tell. He was absolutely furious.

“Father? Father! What’s the matter with you!?” (Rudolf)

“You fool!” (King)

The King, still in disbelief at his son’s actions, had been in a daze for a while. However, once he came to his senses, he began to shout at the prince.

“Do not call me Father ever again. You are no longer my son.” (King)

“What!? Why!?” (Rudolf)

The foolish prince truly seemed unable to comprehend the reason for the King’s unprecedented anger.

A mix of disbelief, sorrow, and contempt. The King’s gaze towards the prince seemed to be filled with a multitude of emotions, surpassing even his anger. After wrestling with these feelings, the King finally managed to speak through clenched teeth.

“Your engagement to Lady Carlotte of the House of Duke Edel was essential to the kingdom. I thought even you would understand that…” (King)

“Father, indeed, the House of Duke Edel is one of the most prominent in the kingdom. However, in this kingdom, the ultimate authority lies with the King, doesn’t it? This is a fact that holds true universally, now and throughout history.” (Rudolf)

The prince had a major misunderstanding.

In this kingdom, the King was absolutely superior. Had he been involved in even the slightest administrative work, studied even a little bit of governance, or learned even the basics of economics, he would never have spouted such nonsense.

“Hey, Chancellor. Is the Chancellor here?” (King)

“Yes, here.” (Chancellor)

Having given up on trying to convince his son, the King called for the Chancellor.

“Chancellor, this fool does not understand how important the House of Duke Edel is to our kingdom. Let him hear it as a reminder before he dies.” (King)

“Haha. Father! ‘Before he dies’—such a bad joke.” (Rudolf)

“Silence!” (King)

The King approached the prince and slapped his grinning face hard.

“Now, Chancellor.” (King)

In the hushed hall, the King urged the Chancellor.

“Your Majesty. I will speak to the prince severely later. But to bring such humiliation in front of all these guests…” (Chancellor)

“With all due respect.” (Carlos)

The Chancellor hesitated, unsure whether to obey the King’s orders, trying to shield the prince. At that moment, Carlotte’s brother, Carlos, spoke up.

“My sister, Carlotte, has been humiliated in front of the public, having had the engagement broken off by the prince! For the sake of my sister’s honor, I request that this continue.” (Carlos)

Her usually calm and kind brother Carlos now had a frightening expression on his face.

His body trembled with anger, and though he was desperately trying to control his desire to shout, he managed to speak with respect. Upon receiving Carlos’s protest, the King turned back to the Chancellor and gave his order once again.

“Chancellor. This is an imperial command. Let this foolish man hear how foolish his actions were. It will also serve as an apology to the Duke’s family and Lady Carlotte.” (King)

“Understood. Now, Prince, please listen carefully. The House of Duke Edel…” (Chancellor)

Then, the Chancellor began to explain to the prince about the importance of the House of Duke Edel, whose engagement he had broken off.
