Baira Volcano (1)
Thank you for reading at bayabuscotranslation.com)
In the morning, the dazzling light pierced my eyes, waking me from sleep. Someone was lifting the tent’s curtain.
“――――” (??)
“………Huh?” (Jack)
When I looked at the entrance to the tent, there was the blue-skinned young man from yesterday, the one who had pointed a spear at me. He didn’t seem to be armed. He was just watching me.
“―――. ――――” (??)
He was saying something, but I couldn’t understand the words. It’s inconvenient not being able to communicate. As soon as I sat up, the young man entered the tent.
“Hey, hey, hey, I’m not some kind of omen of extinction!” (Lost)
For a moment, I was afraid of what he might do, not knowing his intentions. Well, he didn’t seem to have any weapons, so I had confidence I could defend myself if he attacked. From his expression and actions, it looked like he was concerned about me.
“………Woburu.” (Woburu)
The young man placed both hands over his chest and uttered a single word. It was a gesture. He was probably saying, “My name is Woburu”.
” Woburu?” (Jack)
In response to my voice, Woburu nodded eagerly.
Then, he pointed at my chest.
“I am… Lost.” (Jack)
“Wostoba.” (Woburu)
“No, no!” (Jack)
If he gets my name wrong here, it’ll end up as Wostoba. I vigorously shook my head to deny it.
“Lo, Su, To.” (Jack)
“Wo, Su, To…” (Woburu)
It seems he couldn’t pronounce it. Well, that’s fine. Among the Demons, I’ll be Wosuto.
Nodding in agreement, our awkward self-introductions ended.
“Wosuto, ―――――” (Woburu)
The rest of his words were incomprehensible. But Woburu handed me a small cloth bundle. When I opened the bundle, there was a small, tiny dagger inside.
“What’s this?” (Jack)
In response to my questioning voice, Woburu impolitely grabbed my arm and pulled me outside the tent. He pointed at the numerous Emagrigger corpses scattered around the tent, then made gestures as if demonstrating swordsmanship.
“Are you talking about my swordsmanship?” (Jack)
Yesterday, when I was attacked by the Emagriggers, I fought for quite a long time.
Woburu pointed at his eyes, then directed the finger back at me. It seemed he was saying he had watched my fight yesterday. Then, he continued pointing at the dagger, making gestures as though to say, “There’s another one just like this”.
Could he be referring to how I duplicated my sword last night?
“Are you talking about the Mental Extraction skill?” (Jack)
I stared at the dagger Woburu gave me and then used the ground to pull out an exact replica of the dagger.
“Yes.” (Jack)
“――――! ―――――!” (Woburu)
Seeing this, Wōburu seemed greatly surprised, and he hurriedly moved away from me.
“It breaks quickly, though.” (Lost)
I showed him by slamming the duplicated dagger into the ground. The moment I did, it crumbled back into a clump of earth.
“Wosuto, ―――――” (Woburu)
Woburu pointed at the dagger and seemed to be trying to say something. But in his flustered state, I couldn’t understand what he was trying to convey. I tried to return the dagger to the cloth bundle, but Woburu wouldn’t take it back. It seemed he wanted to give it to me as a gift. I’m happy.
“―――. Samandu, ―――――――……….” (Woburu)
“Huh? Did you just say Salamander?” (Jack)
Woburu didn’t respond to my question, and instead, he looked at me with a meaningful gaze.
What’s up with this young man? What did he want to achieve by giving me this dagger? It’s completely mysterious.

In the morning, there was a meeting outside the village. Anfan-san considered my situation and tried to wrap things up quickly. Because of that, we decided to depart for Baira Volcano in the afternoon.
Each person prepared for the journey, and we set off toward the Baira Dungeon. However, Irene’s group was stopped. The one who stopped them was their butler, Davi-san, who suggested that Irene should wait in the Demon village, considering her situation and the difficulty of Baira Volcano.
It seemed that entering a dungeon immediately after a long journey would be too much for a noblewoman like Irene. Irene protested loudly, so Davi-san and Leona-san bowed their heads, and Shia also stayed in the village. Irene didn’t like the idea of me and Shia being together without her knowledge.
After some discussion, it was decided that Shia would remain in the village because a translator would be needed while staying in the village. So, the team heading toward Baira Volcano consisted of me, Yustin, Anfan-san, and Gina-san.
“Jack, do your best.” (Leona)
“I’ll do it casually.” (Jack)
As the four who stayed behind saw us off…
“Lost, young master.” (Davi)
Davi-san called out to me. He was in neat traveling attire, but still dressed with the nimbleness of a butler. His short hair was always well-groomed. This was probably the first time Davi-san had spoken to me directly.
“Where did you get that dagger…?” (Davi)
“Oh, the gatekeeper gave it to me.” (Jack)
“This is…” (Davi)
Davi-san stared closely at the dagger I had strapped to my waist, touching his chin with one hand.
“What is it?” (Lost)
“It’s just… for something made in the Riverda Continent, it looks like a rather expensive piece. It resembles the craftsmanship of the first-rate blacksmiths from the Rauda Continent.” (Davi)
Rauda continent? Why did Woburu give me something like that?

The mountain path to Baira Volcano was difficult, but what was even more difficult was the dungeon inside.
The goal for this trip was to meet the Fire Sage Salamander-sama and secure the Volcanic Volga, but according to prior research, Salamander had been holed up in the depths of the dungeon for many years without coming out.
It feels like sages are often shut-ins, doesn’t it?
The dungeon entrance was hidden midway up Baira Volcano. At first glance, it seemed like just an ordinary hole, but once inside, the structure turned into something like ruins that continued deep inside.
“Salamander probably already noticed our intrusion.” (Anfan)
“But there’s no sign of any changes.” (Gina)
“Maybe he’s in a good mood today. Gina, don’t forget to prepare your magic just in case.” (Anfan)
“Yes.” (Gina)
A conversation between Anfan-san and Gina-san. I think Anfan-san had mentioned something about protecting the Volga series, but… If something like that were in such a dangerous area, no one would be able to take it easily, so it might be fine to leave it alone.
—
The enemies that appeared in Baira Dungeon included “Werewolves,” wolf-men, and “Teethhead,” grotesque giants with mouths coming out of their heads.
“Eis Spear (Ice Spear)!” (Yustin)
Yustin cast a one-phrase incantation to generate ice and shot it at the Teethhead. Even though the Teethhead ate the ice, it didn’t flinch.
“Yuu, use your head! Don’t try to overwhelm it with firepower!” (Anfan)
At that moment, Anfan-san, who was facing another Teethhead, glanced over and gave some advice.
” Eis Bereich (Silver Plate Formation)” (Anfan)
Anfan-san created an ice sheet beneath the Teethhead’s feet, then kicked it up to make it fall. After it fell, he immediately cast fire magic into the huge mouth that had opened wide, causing an explosion from the inside. His smooth handling was impressive. I had thought he was only a high-ranking member of the Magic Guild, but his practical skills were remarkable, especially in hand-to-hand combat.
“…Hmph, I could do that too.” (Yustin)
“Also, you should value teamwork. Lost-kun is fighting in the front, so as a rear guard, either support him or leave the finishing blow to him. That would be more efficient.” (Anfan)
“Got it!” (Yustin)
Feeling embarrassed by his father’s open instruction, Yustin puffed up. But compared to before, he was still more obedient. He pulled himself together and, while keeping his gaze fixed on the new enemy, called out to me.
“Lost, I’ll support you. You take them down.” (Yustin)
“Understood!” (Jack)
I charged into the group of Teethheads. Against such massive enemies, I fought back with my huge two-handed sword. I readied it with both hands and rushed forward. Yustin was handling the aggro of the other monsters, so I was able to focus on taking them down with ease. Seeing this, Gina-san let out a voice of admiration.
“Hmm, that’s quite good teamwork.” (Gina)
“Is it?” (Jack)
“The communication between you two, the potential targets, is clear.” (Gina)
Since Yustin and I had been together for a long time, often playing and training, maybe that’s why I had a vague sense of which monsters Yustin would keep busy and which ones he would leave free.
—
After spending the night, we reached the lowest level after two days. It seemed that the lowest level was on the fifth floor.
I realized just how amazing the party of Chevalier de Liberta, the first to clear this dungeon, must have been. The high difficulty of Baira was due not only to the enemies being unusually strong but also to the extreme heat inside the dungeon. Furthermore, unlike traveling through a desert, where the coolness arrives at night, there was no such reprieve here. The air wasn’t even circulating.
The suffocating heat continued without stopping. Using ice magic could cool it down to some extent, but if I used up too much mana, I wouldn’t have enough for combat against the enemies later. Gradually, my stamina was being drained, and the deeper we went, the harder it became to clear the dungeon. We had to pace ourselves, conserving our mana while calculating how much farther we had to go. Well, it didn’t matter much to me since I was just hot…
“This door leads to it.” (Anfan-san)
Anfan-san’s face remained cool. Although he had defeated most of the Werewolves and Teethheads, he didn’t show any signs of exhaustion. I had heard that although he looked young, he was actually quite older. Probably in his late thirties to early forties.
How did he train himself?
Anfan-san pried open a stone door and entered the grand hall. Gina-san, Yustin, and I followed in order.
The grand hall had a high ceiling, and there was no feeling of being cramped during our dungeon exploration. However, below the floor, deeper than where we stood, lava was bubbling and boiling, so the heat hadn’t lessened.
If we fell, we would be immediately incinerated by the magma. From parts of the surrounding walls, lava was constantly flowing down to the lower levels. Just being there made sweat pour out. But even more striking than the surroundings was the enormous presence at the center of the hall.
The moment we entered the grand hall, I noticed it. The large open space was filled by a gigantic creature lying on its side. It had tough skin covered with sharp, spiky scales, each one so sharp that it could easily pierce through our bodies. It was a gigantic lizard. No, calling it a lizard was a stretch at this size…
“A dragon?” (Gina)
It seemed Gina-san was thinking the same thing as me. She unconsciously voiced the thought.
Dragons are an endangered species. They are said to live only in places untouched by humans, but there have still been reports of sightings recently, so it’s clear they are alive. However, none of the books mentioned dragons of this size.
Anfan-san stepped in to explain.
“That’s right. The master of Baira Volcano, the Fire Sage Salamander, is actually a Red Dragon, a fire dragon.” (Anfan-san)
What? So, this gigantic creature is Salamander-sama? The three sages I had met so far, all resemble humans. Well, Undyne-sama was entirely blue, but she still have a humanoid shape. So, this form is unexpected.
Moreover, the dragon seemed to notice our interaction and slowly raised its head.
It is terrifying…! It’s not just that big things are scary, but even though Yustin and I are strong, there’s no way we could take down a monster that large.
Salamander-sama glared at us.
Of course, dragons are known for their high combat abilities.
I gripped my two-handed sword, and Yustin held the Aquaram Volga, both of us tensing up, waiting for the dragon’s next move. At any moment, that neck might snap down to devour us.
The dragon now opened its massive jaws.
It is coming…!
“……What? Humans?” (Salamander)
However, the dragon, as if discarding the matter, spoke in a dismissive tone and dropped its head again, lying down as if uninterested.
It isn’t even trying to fight! Wait, it can talk?!
“Fire Sage Salamander, may I have a moment for negotiation?” (Anfan)
Anfan-san called out loudly to the indifferent dragon.
The dragon responded without lifting its head.
“……Go away. Leave me alone.” (Salamander)
“We will leave as soon as the matter is settled!” (Anfan)
“……Shut up.” (Salamander)
“This is an important discussion!” (Anfan)
“……It’s none of my business.” (Salamander)
The dragon is grumpy! What had happened to it?
“Let’s continue the conversation! I am Anfan Schwarzschild of the Magic Guild. Following the guild’s policy, I’ve come to obtain one of the mystic powers, the Volcanic Volga!” (Anfan)
“What…?” (Salamander)
Only then did Salamander-sama respond, lifting its head again.
“What did you just say?” (Salamander)
Did I imagine it, or did the surrounding atmosphere change?
When “Volcanic Volga” was mentioned, it felt like a murderous aura emanated from around Salamand-sama. The dragon’s gaze became much more intense. The disinterested dragon was slowly transforming into an eager one. But Anfan-san continued without hesitation.
“Volcanic Volga. Judging by your reaction, we must consider the possibility of this mystic power being misused. It would be safer if it were stored in our Magic Guild. Please hand it over!” (Anfan)
“……” (Salamander)
The dragon fell silent. Salamander-sama remained frozen, glaring at Anfan-san.
“……” (Salamander)
“……” (Anfan)
For a brief moment, silence filled the air, with only the sound of the bubbling magma flowing through the surrounding walls reaching our ears. But that quiet period didn’t last long. Suddenly, Anfan-san entered a combat stance and began casting magic.
“Eiswand (Barrier)!!” (Anfan)
It was a powerful defensive spell. He conjured a wall of ice, preparing for defense. Right after that, Salamander-sama, despite its massive size, swiftly raised its body and charged forward. nfan-san’s defense wasn’t enough, and he was sent flying, crashing to the floor. He seemed to lose consciousness.
“What?!” (Gina)
“Dammit… Eis Spear (Ice Spear)! Triplikat (Triple)!” (Yustin)
Seeing that, Yustin immediately began chanting. He conjured ice spears in midair, duplicating them into three.
“―――Graaaah!!!” (Salamander)
However, his spell was instantly drowned out by Salamander-sama’s roar.
“Did… it disappear?!” (Yustin)
“Yustin, use the Aquaram Volga! Lost-san, help the leader!” (Gina-san)
Gina-san quickly issued orders to Yustin and me. I wasn’t sure what had caused Salamand-sama to suddenly go on the offensive, but there was no time to think, we had to react to the sudden battle. My role was to assist Anfan-san. I rushed over to the collapsed silver-haired mage and supported his body. He remained unconscious. It seemed like the impact was severe. We needed to evacuate him to a safer location.
As I dragged Anfan-san’s body, Yustin and Gina-san continued to attack Salamander-sama with their magic. But their efforts were barely more than distractions. Despite their use of the Aquaram Volga for water and ice magic, nothing seemed to affect the red fire dragon. With a roar, Salamander-sama released a massive stream of flames from its mouth and rampaged.
“My Volga is being misused?! You think you can protect it?!” (Salamander)
Shouting, Salamand-sama continued attacking Yustin and Gina-san. It seemed to be enraged about the “Volcanic Volga”.
