“Gyaaaaaa!”

My scream echoed throughout the bedroom.

I woke up and immediately went to wash my face, and I saw something terrifying reflected in the mirror. It was me, a faceless me. No eyes, no nose, no mouth. It was as if a flesh-colored egg was placed on my head.

If I cover what I assume to be my eyes, my vision closes, but nothing is reflected in the mirror, and when I try to touch my eyes, my fingers stop just before reaching them, as if blocked by glass.

Similarly, I couldn’t find my nose, but I did find my mouth. Honestly, it was even more shocking than seeing the faceless me. When I opened my mouth, a mouth grew out of the flesh-colored egg. There were healthy teeth and a tongue. When I closed it, there was no trace left, as if it was never there.

I finally understood more than ever that I am not human.

Thanks to that shocking incident, I am now wide awake, sitting on the throne, munching on fruit while reading the book. I’m saving the blue fruit for emergencies, and now I’m eating the chilled green fruit. When chilled, the taste deepens in my mouth and lasts longer.

By the way, after asking the book, I found out that this fruit has the effect of neutralizing poison. I decided to always keep at least one as a spare. As I continued reading, I learned many things.

First, quests. Many are about subjugation or occupation. Frankly, they are very bloody. Occasionally, there are things about the dungeon or subordinates, but it’s mostly about killing or controlling. I probably won’t actively pursue them.

I also learned a lot about skill abilities. The methods to acquire them include quest rewards, consuming magic essence, and obtaining professions. Magic essence seems to be something like the essence of magic obtained when killing living beings. Experience points? I thought so, but it seems different. It’s not fully understood yet, but the stronger the creature, the more magic essence it holds, and killing it yields more. It’s enough to understand it as something close to experience points.

A profession is something obtained by clearing certain conditions. Raising the level of that profession naturally brings to mind skill abilities that suit oneself and makes them usable. This is apparently the common method. The first two methods can’t be used without this book, so it can’t be helped.

When I displayed the details of my only skill ability, ‘Gravity’:

Active Skill

Name: Gravity

Ability: Manipulate gravity

Category: Environment

Maximum Range: 10 meters

Maximum Power: 10 times

Magic Consumption: Occurs every second

Unlock Conditions: Obtain Sage’s Knowledge and a Fragment of Truth

Just displaying this much took a lot of questions to the book. Can’t it explain things better?

The name is the name. The ability is what it does. Range and power are as they sound, and magic consumption is what occurs when used. It’s every second, so it’s not efficient. The category is to determine whether the skill ability falls under physical or magical, but Gravity apparently belongs to neither.

Unlock conditions show what is needed to learn the skill. For example, to learn an advanced skill, you must have learned the basic and intermediate ones. For this unlock condition, it’s likely that ‘Otherworldly Intelligence’ possesses the ability to substitute these two.

What abilities does ‘Otherworldly Intelligence’ have?

There are also unique skills that only certain species can obtain. These cannot be obtained through magic essence consumption or professions. Quest rewards are random, so there’s a slight hope.

By the way, my current magic essence is only enough for one Kobold and a dozen insects. Thinking I wouldn’t be able to get any skill with that, I checked anyway and found I could obtain one language. The top candidates are human language or the demon language used by Kobolds and such. Emotionally, I prefer human language, but rationally, I lean towards demon language, so I’m putting it off for now.

I also used the Doppelganger unique skill to change and set my face, changed the item page to display images, and made it so that touching the image shows its description and touching it twice makes it pop out.

Ah, gaining knowledge is fun, but it strains my eyes and tires me out.

Before I knew it, quite a bit of time and fruit had been consumed.

There are still unread parts, but this is enough for today. There’s no clock or window, so I can’t tell the time, but it feels like evening. Perfect for dinner.

When I checked the stock of green fruit in the kitchen, it was nearly gone. It seems I ate too much because it was so delicious.

I have the blue fruit, but I want to save it for emergencies. Right now, the only ways to recover magic power are sleeping or eating the blue fruit. If I’m going to pick more, now is the time. At night, nocturnal creatures will likely come out, and there’s no guarantee I can see at night. If I hurry now, I should be safe.

Once decided, it’s time to act. Moving at night is courting death. While it’s still bright, I open the door and set out!

…Huh? When I opened the door, there’s a green wall? Was there a wall here before?

When I looked up, there stood the green giant who should have been on the verge of death yesterday, now fully recovered. When the green giant recognized me, it slowly reached out its hand.

“Garuguzuu, Gorugua.” (Orc)

At that moment, I decided to acquire the demon language first.
