The Forest Outside

Uwa~, it’s outside. So scary~. There was a time when I used to think that way too. Now? Nah~, the outside is nice.
The reason my mindset changed so dramatically was probably because I had gotten used to handling the skill ‘Gravity’. When using ‘Gravity’, I felt like something was drained from my body, probably some kind of mana. Moreover, the consumption varied depending on the scale and intensity.
The scale seemed to have a maximum range of about 10 meters. It was possible to generate ‘Gravity’ over the entire area or just a part of it. The intensity seemed to max out at about 10 times. I carefully observed and measured it. Even when I tried a hundred or a thousand, it didn’t activate.
Maybe I don’t have enough mana, or perhaps there’s another reason.
As for the consumption, the larger the scale and intensity, the more intense the consumption. During the experiment, I once overused it and was struck by a sense of exhaustion.
What saved me then was this blue fruit. It grew on the surrounding trees and had a refreshing taste like an apple. Considering the possibility of poison at first, I threw it to a nearby log-sized insect. It ate it heartily without any signs of dying, so I deemed it relatively safe. This blue fruit, which seemed likely to become my main food source from now on, had a special property. It restored mana when eaten. I had already secured about a dozen of them and stored them in the dungeon.
Right now, I’m exploring the area around the hill where the dungeon’s door is and collecting fruits. Once I gather enough, I move to the next tree. I’m about halfway done with the perimeter. If I find anything unusual, I plan to toss it into the dungeon and ask the book about it later, but unfortunately, I haven’t found anything yet. Surviving on just blue fruits would be tough, so I’d like to find a few more food options. Like that green fruit over there… Ah!
Unlike the blue fruits that grow directly from the tree, the green fruits hang from vines dangling from the tree. They don’t seem to be the same species. I should find something to test for poison first… Safety secured…
After finishing the necessary steps, I immediately tried eating the green fruit.
Hmm, unlike the blue fruits, it doesn’t give me that replenishing feeling inside my body. It doesn’t seem to restore mana. The taste is sweet and lingers in the mouth, probably because it’s a fruit with high water content. Not bad. I’ll take some back.
While testing for poison, I accidentally hit a log-sized caterpillar with the fruit, turning it hostile, along with a whole swarm. ‘Gravity’ at triple strength crushed them easily, but the sheer number made it tough. Still, I didn’t let setbacks go to waste. During the chaos, I managed to toss the green fruit into one of their mouths. Since it didn’t show any abnormalities and just kept attacking, I concluded it wasn’t poisonous.
Alright, let’s gather some and head back.
While searching, I spotted a red fruit growing the same way as the green ones. Naturally, I approached to collect it, only to be stunned by what I saw.
A battle site. Several trees were toppled, and the area was stained with bright red blood. That red fruit was just a green one covered in blood. There were six corpses here. Five were human. Although some of their equipment was damaged, they seemed to have high-quality gear. The remaining one was a green giant. About three meters tall with a muscular build, but covered in slash wounds that made survival seem unlikely.
What shocked me most was that I felt nothing seeing human corpses. According to my memories, I should feel disgusted, but all I thought was, “Lucky, I can take their equipment”.
I gathered the human corpses and stripped them of their equipment. Even broken items might be useful, so I took everything. I searched thoroughly for anything else but found only a large cloth bag.
Strange. Normally, they’d carry tools or currency.
*Rustle.*
A suspicious sound. I immediately leaped away.
Call me cowardly? Fine by me. Pride won’t keep me alive.
The source of the sound became clear right away. The green giant was standing up unsteadily.
What vitality. But with so much blood lost, survival seems impossible.
Sure enough, it collapsed again shortly after standing.
Whether it died or just couldn’t stand anymore doesn’t matter.
I piled human corpses on top of the giant to prevent it from getting back up. It would likely become prey for beasts attracted by the blood.
After confirming there was nothing left to do, I left the scene.
What a haul. Two types of fruits and equipment from five people (including broken pieces).
I stored the fruits in the refrigerator and the equipment in the book. After a quick bath, exhausted, I dove into bed. Sinking into the soft comfort and succumbing to the approaching drowsiness, I drifted off into a deep slumber.
