Magic Book

When I woke up, I was still in the throne room. Perhaps because I had lost consciousness on the floor, every joint in my body ached. As I got up and twisted my body to loosen up, I noticed something strange. The corpse of the wolf was gone. The spear, the blood…there wasn’t even a trace left behind as if none of it had ever existed.
Even my injuries were healed. Maybe the pain on my forehead from hitting the armrest and the pain on my face from slamming into the floor had faded, but the shattered kneecap that should have been broken was also healed.
It’s not the kind of injury that will heal with sleep. I have yet another mystery, but this time I have a clue, that book.
When I went behind the throne to get the book, it was flashing bright red as if demanding attention. I had never seen such an attention-seeking book before.
When I opened it, the words “Quest Complete!” were displayed once again. I was no longer surprised by this. Turning to the flashing page, the words “Quest Completion Reward” were written. But what followed this time was “Food: Meat”, along with a drawing of a piece of meat.
Honestly, this is more welcome than a skill. Food is my biggest concern right now.
Following the book’s prompt, I pressed the drawing of the meat, expecting it to pop out, but instead, the image disappeared, and the book displayed some sort of list.
…Huh? Where’s the meat?
Thinking it might be somewhere in the list, I checked each item one by one.
“Attack a human village.”
“Recruit monsters as subordinates.”
“Construct dungeon floors.”
All of them are incomprehensible tasks. Rewards are listed, but I don’t care about that. What mattered now is food.
No matter how much I searched, there was no mention of meat.
“Hey! Where did the meat go?!”
Could it be that the book was playing a trick on me? How cheeky for a mere book.
Just as I was about to throw the book in anger, the pages started flashing again.
“What now?”
I muttered as I turned the page, and there it was the word “Inventory”.
Among the three items listed, one of them was indeed meat.
Just to be sure, I pressed the part that said “meat,” and with a “pop”, the meat appeared from the book and landed in my hands. A slimy texture. It was a single piece of meat with a rich red color, looking incredibly delicious. However, I didn’t know what kind of meat it was.
Normally, you’d think beef, pork, or chicken, but this meat came from a book. Plus, this world had bipedal wolves carrying spears. The chances of this being “normal” meat are slim. If I were starving, I’d eat it, but without knowing if it was safe, I couldn’t risk it.
Yet, I couldn’t just leave it out either. I thought of putting it in a fridge, but…
Due to its sliminess and the oil from the meat, it slipped from my hands. Instinctively, I reached out my left hand to catch it. My left hand was holding the open book, and the meat fell onto the book… and disappeared.
…?
Curious, I looked at the book and saw that the word “meat” was back in the inventory list.
Did the book store it?
To test it, I decided to take out something other than the meat. The other items listed were “Broken Spear” and “Pack Dog Kobold Fur”. I had a feeling I knew what it was, but to confirm, I selected “Broken Spear”.
With a “pop,” the spear the wolf had carried appeared, broken cleanly near the base of the spearhead. The wolf’s body must have been stored in this book, leaving only the usable parts. What remained were the “Broken Spear” and the “Pack Dog Kobold Fur”. It seemed the wolf was a species called a “Pack Dog Kobold”. I thought the fur might be of high quality, but upon inspection, it was just an ordinary pelt.
Afterward, I pressed the two items against the book, and they disappeared, with their names reappearing in the inventory.
I see. This book isn’t just any book. It’s a magic book. I might as well try one more thing.
“Where’s the quest page?”
Soon, the front pages started flashing. Turning them revealed the quest page.
Thanks to the meat, I realized that this book responds when I ask. A book that stores items and answers questions. Magic is amazing.
What bothers me then is the difference between knowledge and reality. As far as I know, there is no such thing as magic. There is science that resembles magic, though. In this reality, magic exists. In my world, weapons meant guns, but the Pack Dog Kobold used a spear. I have never heard of a Kobold species before. At times like these, this book might be useful.
“Why is there a gap between my knowledge and reality?”
I expected the pages to flash immediately, but they didn’t. Growing anxious that my question might be rejected, I waited until much later when a page near the back started flashing. It took a while, but at least I would get an answer, I thought as I turned the page.
“Help: Contacting Support Center. Please wait a moment.” (Book)
Huh?
I thought nothing could surprise me anymore with this book, but I was wrong. This was surprising.
There’s a support center?! And it’s contacting them?! This book is way too competent.
After a short wait, the text updated.
“The inquiry result has arrived.” (Book)
The result arrived. So even if the book itself didn’t have the answer, it could still get one.
Excited to see the answer, I read the updated text and tilted my head.
“Sorry, there’s a mistake.” (Book)
What?
