Battle?

It had the thickness of an encyclopedia. When held in hand, it felt so heavy that one might consider using it as a blunt weapon. I briefly considered using it as a weapon, but quickly dismissed the idea. While it might be able to block a spear, its surface area felt too unreliable. So, I decided to use it properly and started reading it.
Page one.
“Now Loading”
Huh? Is it loading something?
After a moment, the text disappeared, and new words appeared.
“Quest Completed!”
Huh? I don’t remember accepting any quest, though? No, I’m too surprised to keep up with what’s happening. I’m being swept away by the book’s pace. I need to calm down for a moment.
I took my eyes off the book and checked my surroundings. There was no sign of anyone coming in, and whether for better or worse, I was the only one here. I also checked the back cover of the book, but no matter how I looked at it, it was just a book. It definitely didn’t look like an electronic device. When I looked back at the book, the previous page had returned to being blank, and the second page was blinking as if demanding attention.
Is this really a book?
With caution, I turned the page, and there, along with the words “Quest Completion Reward,” was an illustration of a wrapped box labeled “Random Skill Box”. After staring at it for a while, the word “Push!!” appeared below the box.
Fine, I’ll push it as requested.
When I pressed it, the box opened, and I felt something entering my body. An unfamiliar sensation coursed through me and then quickly vanished. The illustration of the box disappeared from the book, replaced by text.
“Skill Acquired: Gravity ‘Gravity’ – The ability to manipulate gravity.”
Huh? That’s it? Isn’t that explanation too brief?
I tried flipping through the pages to see if there was a more detailed explanation when—
*Click*
I heard the sound of a door opening somewhere. A cold sweat ran down my back.
“Gau…?” (??)
A voice clearly not human, along with cautious footsteps.
I know it. I know which door has opened and what is there. But maybe I am wrong. Maybe my prediction is off.
Clinging to that faint hope, I peeked out from behind the throne. Standing there was a single spear-wielding, bipedal wolf.
Should I be glad that my prediction of five wolves was wrong, or despair that the strongest-looking one has shown up?
For a moment, a naive thought crossed my mind—“It’s just one, maybe it’s manageable”. But I quickly shook it off. It had a spear, and its physical abilities were clearly superior. I desperately thought of ways to avoid conflict or escape.
“Gah, Gau! Gaa gaa!” (??)
Crap! I’ve been spotted.
The wolf bristled its fur, pointed its spear at me, and growled.
…No, maybe it is trying to talk to me in its own language.
“H-hi there. How—”
“Guga!” (??)
As I stopped hiding, raised both hands, and stepped out from behind the throne, the wolf roared and charged at me.
W-why?!
The distance between me and the wolf rapidly shrank. I had nothing to defend myself with. I had left the book behind the throne, not wanting it to be mistaken for a weapon, and there was nothing else that could block that spear. The skill from earlier flashed through my mind.
“Skill Acquired: Gravity ‘Gravity’ – The ability to manipulate gravity.”
Completely unreliable. But I am not ready to die without trying something. I don’t know how to use it or how dangerous it may be.
I knew nothing, so I shouted with all my might.
“Gravity!”
Immediately, hundreds of kilograms of weight pressed down on me. Unable to bear it, my knees buckled, causing me to smash my kneecap on the floor. The pain made me topple forward, hitting my head on the armrest of the throne. The splitting pain overwhelmed me as I collapsed to the ground.
Then, a few seconds later, the weight disappeared, and I could move freely again. I had nearly killed myself before the wolf could. On top of that, perhaps as a side effect of the skill, my entire body was exhausted.
I want nothing more than to close my eyes, but I haven’t checked on the wolf. If my effort has been in vain, I wouldn’t even be able to run and would surely die.
Mustering all my strength, I looked ahead and saw the wolf lying in a pool of blood.
I understand why it has fallen, but why is it bleeding? I need to confirm. If this unexplained power causes the bleeding, it may affect me too.
Forcing my aching body to move, I crawled to the wolf. When I got close, the cause of death was clear. Its spear had broken, and the tip had pierced its throat. It must have fallen forward, and after the spear broke, it landed on the tip, which was facing upward.
Yes, it was just bad luck. It wasn’t a side effect of my skill.
Feeling relieved, an irresistible wave of exhaustion washed over me. I closed my eyes and lost consciousness.
